  • I never write reviews but this deserved one
Simple to use. Basic, with no useless features that will likely break in the future. Construction quality is excellent. Was producing massive amounts of smoke within seconds of hooking to battery and leak was quickly found by filler neck of gas tank. You will not be disappointed.

  • SMOKEY!
One of the essential tools that help anyone doing car repair. This one really produces a large volume of easily visible smoke, and at low pressure. It allows a user to locate the source of vacuum and closed-system leaks. It replaces one which kind of worked, but the output was more like coded signals instead of a continuous stream. And the gaps between output became very long. Advice for anyone using this unit: Don't attach the connection clamps to the vehicle's battery until you have it completely set up/connected and ready to go. The smoke comes on very quickly, and the first 15 seconds are the best time to spot leaks. When checking the intake system, you have to be quick. As time elapses, smoke will begin coming out of the intake/airbox and be everywhere. Giving this 5 stars, without hesitation. How long it will perform so well is the only question. But one of the biggest advantages here is that it is repairable, whereas many are not. And... American Made! ... show more

  • Tons of Smoke
I received the unit today. Though I haven't used it to find the vacuum leak on my car yet, I did set it up and try it out. READ the instructions thoroughly--not long. The instructions say that it takes several uses to break the wick in, however, it started producing tons of smoke right away. I got the mineral oil from Walmart for under $2 for 16 oz. I used about 6 oz to saturate the wick and have enough in the bottom according to instructions. I set my air compressor to 60 psi and it filled my two-car garage before I knew it. This wasn't the cheapest smoke machine available, so I can't say it was worth the extra $25, but it's definitely worth it to me know that I got something that will work when I need it. It is very well constructed and I expect will pay for itself over and over. I like to buy older cars at a fraction of the cost of new ones (like my 2004 Mercedes SL500 at 10% of the original price), realizing they may need some fixing from time to time, so having the right tools is essential. If you are a DIYer and do your own automotive work, this is an essential tool for your toolbox. ... show more

  • Great DIY smoker. Nearly perfect.
It works just as advertised. I found it to make plenty of smoke and was able to identify my small leak in the EVAP system. For a DIY person like myself, it's ideal due to the low relative cost. If I were doing this type of work professionally, I would buy a better machine. My one criticism is the power cord. It is permanently attached to the oil reservoir and when you go to unscrew the reservoir to add oil, it's kind of a pain. The solution is to make the power cord detachable and that's what I did to mine. I cut the cord near the tank and then put a two conductor male plug on the smoker that you can buy at Home Depot for a couple of bucks. On the power cord I mounted the corresponding female plug. This modification makes screwing the oil reservoir on and off so much easier. It's cheap and easy to do, so I recommend this mod to anyone buying this machine. ... show more

  • Well built and works GREAT.
I'm an engineer, tinkerer, machinist, yadayada. I've been having a reoccurring issue with my 2008 Chevy truck and have put three canister purge valves on this truck (as well as vacuum solenoid and fuel tank pressure gauge) trying to throw rocks into the dark at this emissions code I keep getting. It turns out that I apparently keep getting really poor canister vent solenoid valves that don't work or fail quickly. This stinger smoke system works GREAT and put me on the faulty part right away. I wish I had bought it sooner. It's VERY well built - it's made from solid machined aluminum - and very much worth the investment. I'm a little surprised they can make it like they do at this price point and extremely happy with the performance. ... show more

  • Works like a charm.
Fired right up & worked with in minutes of hooking it up to the battery. I set my compressor to 90psi, but you could just set it to 60psi very easily. At any rate, it found my leak in the intake system of my e90 N54 powered BMW. The boost is back. You could buy a pressure test adapter kit for your inlets for a lot less money, and that would have been my next step had the smoke test failed to reveal anything, but the smoke test found my leak. So, I guess you can try and hear the leak (pressure test) or see the leak (smoke test). The only thing I didn’t like about it was the price. $149.00. I guess it’s better than $800 plus. The one thing that sold me was the few reviews by professional mechanics that said this particular model is just as good or better than $1000.00 plus machines they use at work. ... show more

  • Makes loads of smoke.
For the money this is a great smoke machine. It makes loads of thick white smoke and I found all the leaks in my vacuum lines and exhaust system in about 5 minutes, even a really tiny leak that I solved by tightening up a clamp around an intake boot. The unit is built really well and will last a long time. This is my first time doing a smoke test so I didn't know what to expect. It should be obvious but this is SMOKE. It's created by burning mineral oil, so it stinks, like burned oil. The smoke tubes from the unit will get wet inside from the smoke condensing when it cools and that might leak out. It stinks too. So make sure you use all the provided plugs and make sure it stays upright. ... show more

  • Produces lots of smoke...
Machine works very well for its intended purpose. Follow instructions carefully... Be sure to wet the wick as you pour and fill for the first time. Pour the mineral oil directly over wick with coil on it to prime it well. Attachments work great. I have read a lot of reviews where people say they wish it had a remote on off toggle switch built in. That might be a problem if you are working with unit fully stretched out but working under the hood it was easy to clip and unclip from battery. It's a bit dirty as oil wets things as you smoke but it works very well and had found my evap leak in less than a minute... ... show more
