Features

  • SAGE: A unique family of knives that showcases the innovative lock mechanisms that have helped define modern folding knife technology. Every knife features the same basic design parameters a full-flat-ground, leaf-shaped CPM S30V blade.
  • Full-Flat Grind: This knife features a blade ground with flat bevels that extend from the spine all the way to the cutting edge. This grind reduces drag during cutting and decreases overall weight.
  • FRN Handle: Fiberglass Reinforced Nylon is a polymer mixed with glass fiber then injection molded into formed and textured lightweight high-strength knife handles.
  • SLIPIT: A non-locking system that combines the convenience of clip carry and one-hand opening with a socially friendly notch-joint mechanism that helps hold the blade safely open during use, but does not mechanically lock it.
  • Specifications: Weight (oz): 2.9, Overall Length (Inches): 7.13, Blade Length (Inches): 3, Blade Steel: CPM S30V, Grind: Full-Flat

  • Absolutely fantastic EDC knife
Style: Lightweight
The media could not be loaded. I really can’t overstate how amazing this knife is. Fantastic fit and finish, incredible action, great ergonomics, rock solid locking mechanism, smooth and “drop-shutty”, excellent steel, and last but for a lot of folks not least, great fidget factor! I like button locks and was a bit hesitant about getting a compression lock but I have to say I think I like it even better than a button lock, as it is almost as quick and easy to use and just feels more secure — and it is definitely safer: because of how you need to grip the knife to activate the lock, there is really no feasible way that your fingers can get in the path of the blade as it closes. Also, the weight is just perfect. Some of the other Spyderco FRN-handle lightweights almost feel *too* light and it makes them feel a bit cheap. The Sage 5, however, has full steel liners on both sides beneath the FRN scales, giving it a bit of additional strength and heft and a premium feel. That said, it is still a legit lightweight, coming in at 2.7 ounces and, hence, still well under the magic ounce per blade inch benchmark. I can’t recommend this knife too highly for any reasonable EDC use case. ... show more

  • Absolutely Superb EDC knife, perfect in every way
Style: Lightweight
I own about a dozen knives, including a Spyderco PM2, Benchmade Bugout and Barrage, two Kershaws, Kizer, WE, and others. I had my eye on the Sage 5 lightweight for months before finally pulling the trigger. I can't believe I waited this long, it is hands down my favorite knife now and will be in my pocket more than all my others combined. For the purposes of this review I am going to compare it to my Paramilitary 2, but a more appropriate comparison is the Para 3 as they are virtually the same size. This will be a brief review because I think the Sage 5 is better in virtually every aspect than the Para 2 or Benchmade Bugout. First off, I like the build quality of the Sage more than either. Mine came with perfect action right out of the box, a perfectly centered blade, and an incredibly sharp edge grind. The blade stock is thinner than the Para series so it is a better knife for slicing. I also prefer the shape of the Sage blade because the tip doesn't seem as fragile. Lastly, the ergonomics of this thing are basically perfect. It is far and away my most comfortable knife to hold in the hand and use and is a perfect weight - not too light (which I think the Bugout is), but also not too heavy. I just love this knife and seriously, if you are somebody who is just looking for a knife to carry everyday and don't want something too big, too small, too heavy, or too light, this knife is what you want. I can't believe it isn't a more popular knife in Spyderco's lineup. ... show more

  • My new favorite knife
Style: Lightweight
I had been researching the differences between the Benchmade Bugout and the Spyderco Para3, and someone mentioned taking a look at the Sage 5. I am now SO glad I found this knife! I still purchased an exclusive Bugout with 20CV blade and G10 scales, but I find myself carrying the Sage 5 Lightweight much more often. I find the compression lock mechanism on the Spyderco is a much safer method of closing the knife as it encourages you to completely remove your fingers away from the blade's path. The Benchmade Bugout has the Axis lock mechanism that requires you to pull down the bar to release the blade, but due to the size of the Bugout and my grip on it, I have accidentally caught my pinky's nail twice with the blade. Sure, the opening and closing have gotten easier with experience, but it's something I don't have to worry about at all with the Spyderco Sage 5. Fidget factor is strong with both of these knives. I find blade sharpness to be better on the Spyderco out of the box. I'm able to easily shave hair, whereas the Benchmade struggled a bit. Mind you, blades can be sharpened, but it's still nice to have this out of the box. The Sage 5 Lightweight's plastic handle really doesn't bother me. Tapping and scratching it sounds kind of hollow, but most importantly, I find no sharp edges on the plastic and the grip is very comfortable in my medium-large hands. Very minimal flexing (unlike the videos I've seen of the plastic Benchmade Bugouts), and there's no blade play at all. Would I recommend this knife? Absolutely, yes! ... show more

  • My ultimate EDC knife
Style: Carbon Fiber
This knife is my ultimate Every Day Carry knife. It's not too big or too small. It fits in my pocket well whether I wear jeans, slacks or scrubs (which I wear every day for work). The clip can be moved from side to side so it can be carried "tip up" by right or left handers. It arrives very sharp and is flat ground. The S30V steel is awesome. I have several others made with the steel, so I'm a big fan. The scales are made of light-weight carbon fiber laying over some kind of synthetic material. There is a slight texture that helps with grip. The blade is deep and thick at the spine. The pivot point has washers and responds well to a quality knife oil. This, combined with the big circle cut-out on the blade make flipping it open a breeze. And when you're ready to close it, just press the back liner-lock and the blade will swing closed without any effort. Whenever I review a product I really like, I always say something like "if I lost it, I would buy it again". And in this case, it's the truth. This is my second one of this exact model. I lost the first one, waited a couple months, then just had to order a second one. The price of this knife is admittedly high, but for me, it's the best EDC knife I could want. So I'll pay it. Twice. ... show more

  • A well-engineered cutting tool
Style: Carbon Fiber
This is my first Spyderco knife. Coming from thumb grooves, flipper tabs, and thumb studs, I was quite pleased with how it operated in opening using the spydie hole and closing almost effortlessly with the compression lock. I also liked how ergonomic it feels in the hand. It's actually larger than I was expecting but it looks and feels great in use and cuts every bit as well as expected. Finally, the composite scales, the signature feature of this version, feel good and add a very classy touch, making it a five star knife. And, unfortunately, that's already making me look forward to my next Spyderco knife purchase! ... show more
