  • 15.7" Version | Perfect for camping, backpacking, hunting, etc
Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
I was hesitant because I read some comments about people who used their hatchet/axe once and the steel chipped. I also assumed that, since majority of comments were positive, these were a select few with defects. I still don't know if this is true, but the hatchet I got is AMAZING. I took it camping this last weekend to try it out. It came out of the box sharp and ready to use, and the sharpening stone that comes with it is a bit soft but I think it kind of helps put a nice edge on it. I used the stone after a few strikes and got the edge even sharper than it had come, pretty quickly. It feels well built, stood up to a weekend of chopping all different hardness of wood. The large ferro rod that comes with it works perfectly and is a nice size compared to ferro rods that come with "survival" gear. Most of those smaller ferro rods are really only good for dire situations. The rod that comes with this axe (pull the string at the bottom of the hatchet handle) is nice size (good for when you need to use the axe to spark it) and reminds me of the rods you would buy separately. The rubberized handle makes this axe very comfortable to use, especially with a nice pair of fingerless gloves. It's big enough to use as an axe when needed, small enough to carry in your pack for an everyday hatchet, and strong enough for whatever you may have to put it through. If you are looking for a hatchet that you'll need for daily use, this might not be the best option. Not because it doesn't hold up well, but because it doesn't seem to be made for such use. It will last much longer and be put to better use for those who need it for occasions (camping, hunting, backpacking, etc). As for me, I love it and it's perfect for what I need it for. I'll update after a few more uses. ... show more

  • Exceeded expectations - Highly recommended
Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
I'm very impressed with this hatchet! After watching around 30 youtube videos in the search for a large campsite hatchet I settled on this model. I decided to purchase the Schrade SCAXE2L over the smaller model as I wanted something with more force behind it and felt that the longer handle would provide the extra oomph to cut through 2" limbs with ease. The hatched arrived well packaged and very sharp. It's easily sharp enough to whittle wood as you'd do with a knife. The grind looked very centered and the coating seems very durable. The handle is comfortable and the angle of the grip seems to work well. It's not overly grippy or rough and if I was going to be using it a lot in hot weather where sweat might be an issue I might want to wrap it with athletic tape, or a sandpaper like grip. Last weekend when my wife asked that I cut down a tree that had lost the top 1/2 of it's branches in a recent storm I grabbed this hatchet to do the job. I realize it's not an Axe, but the tree that I was cutting down was roughly 8 inches at the base and only about 25 feet tall. While still alive it was covered with vines, didn't look very healthy and was shading part of our garden. It did take a few minutes to cut through the base to drop the tree. I laid it between our fence and another tree and was glad that this hatched provided me with the control to cut a notch with enough precision that I was able to place it in the three foot gap between them. Once down, I used the stump and a cutting block and cut off all the limbs and then split them into two foot sections. The hatchet was excellent for this. I placed limbs up to 2 inches in diameter and with one quick swing the were cut in two. I was surprised at how the weight and sharpness of this hatchet made quick work of this task compared to sawing them off or using another tool. After cutting the limbs I stripped the bark of the 20 foot section of the tree for use in another project. When choked up this axe can perform some very knife like tasks which was also a surprise. The coating was mostly pristine after this 45 minute test of the axe. There was only one slide scratch along the face of the blade. I checked the sharpness compared to unboxing and to my surprise it was just as sharp with no dulling, no edge rolling and no chipping. My only concern long term is how the axe head is enclosed within the polymer handle. If struck hard enough I am concerned that it might break and cause the axe head to become loose. After using it and striking the polymer a few times, my concern for this has been greatly reduced. I believe it's strong enough to hold up over the long term but will post a follow up if it doesn't. I purchased this item and received nothing for this review. In fact I was so impressed that I've recommended it to a few friends and have sold at least three more based on my description of it's performance. ... show more

  • Axe is fine but the sheath is awful
Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
The axe is quality. It's a fine compromise between a splitting axe and a chopping axe. It does both well enough. The ferro rod is a nice added value, but I never keep it in the axe handle. The major complaint is with the sheath. For starters, it's a total pain to both remove and insert the axe. You have to do it juuust right or else the blade won't go in or come out. And last, as you can see by the pictures, the axe shifts around in the sheath. In fact, the axe naturally wants to lay in the sheath in such a way so that tha tip of the blade sticks out above the sheath, which is super dangerous. I could easily cut our gouge myself at worst. And at best, could tear my shirt or other gear. Several times my arm would catch the blade. I'm lucky I didn't cut myself. So, all in all, be prepared to make your own sheath. Schrade really should fix this design. It's a liability. ... show more

  • it came pretty damn sharp right out of the box
Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
I bought this hatchet a couple months ago specifically for a cabin trip in December, but also for all other outdoor/hiking/camping trips. I gotta tell ya, it came pretty damn sharp right out of the box, and after I put some finishing touches on it with the included stone, I was literally able to shave with it. Used it the first time on the first evening at Argow Cabin near the Shenandoah National Forest. The cabin is basically in the middle of nowhere, it's a 1 1/4 mile hike from the nearest road, no electricity, no running water. This hatchet sliced up some really nice cardboard thin kindling to get our fires going, both for the pit outside and for the wood stove and fireplace inside to heat the cabin. The logs were already cut down to size though, so that really is all we used it for, kindling. But I definitely tried it out on a couple logs and it does the job. Would I want to split full size logs with it? Of course not. That's what axes and mauls are for. But chopping down branches and small trees and cutting up kindling for a fire, this hatchet is great. Even my friend, who is a much more avid outdoorsman than I, commented that it was a pretty sweet hatchet. The sheath also has a very useful belt loop, so it strapped very securely to my backpack for the hike. ... show more
