  • Super Premium steel in a moderately priced knife
The Spyderco Native 5 lightweight is a nice, every day carry (EDC) knife. The handle is made of fiber reinforced nylon (FRN) with s pattern that enhances your grip. Some people complain the FRN feels "cheap," but I like it for EDC because it is light, strong, and has a good grip. The Native 5 with a black handle has s35vn (an excellent premium steel in its own right) for its blade. The dark blue handle is for a blade with s110v steel, which can be heat treated to give a high hardness and amazing edge retention so that you don't have to sharpen it often under normal use, which is good, because this steel is a challenge to sharpen. s110v steel also is supposed to be highly corrosion resistant. I've included this knife in my EDC rotation, and it opens gradually and easily with the Spyderco hole, though I need two hands to close it due to the lock back. It came sharp, and it cut through everything I tried - cardboard, rope, a plastic box, etc. I have yet to need to sharpen it. I like it is so light that it disappears in my pocket, and the Native 5 has a nice shape with no gaps or rough edges. ... show more

  • The very finest steel in an everyday carry
I’m a longtime fan and carrier of the Spyderco Military folder with CPM S110V blade steel—quite simply the finest knife steel on the planet, with edge retention like no other formula. The Military Model also features Spyderco’s rugged, textured G-10 handle scales—super durable—and a smoother action than any non-assisted folder I’ve ever held, easily opened and closed with one hand. But the truth is, carrying in the service or even while camping is just a different thing than everyday carry. So I decided to look to something a bit shorter and lighter. Not willing to compromise on the blade steel, I first considered Spyderco’s Para Military 2 and Para 3, both of which distill the best of the Military Model into a more compact package. But I ultimately settled on the Native 5 Lightweight, which offers the same superior CPM S110V steel in a full-flat grind blade, but also with a weight-reducing injection-molded fiberglass-reinforced-nylon (FRN) handle option that the Para Models don’t have. The net result is a knife which, when folded, is a full 1 1/2” shorter than the Military (4” versus 5 1/2”) at half the weight (2.5 oz versus 4.3 oz), with the same premium CPM S110V cutting power. It’s surprising how much of a difference that size and weight reduction makes in an everyday carry clipped in your pocket. The Military Model’s heft alone augments its super-slick action; and as a smaller knife, the Native 5 will never quite reach that level of opening and closing smoothness. Having said that, I only had to work the Native 5 a very few times to master one-hand opening and closing with ease. In short, the Native 5 is a spectacular option, and my new choice, for everyday carry. ... show more

  • Very good edge out of the box.
Very good edge out of the box, which is important given the type of steel used. S110V is a very durable steel but is fairly difficult to sharpen, but once there, holds an edge well. It’s what makes this knife. I like the handle, simple, lightweight and serviceable, nothing fancy.

  • Excellent EDC
This is an excellent EDC, because it is extremely lightweight. The steel is of exceptional quality; although it is hard to sharpen at first, it's edge will last much, much longer than other, softer steels. I recommend removing the pocket clip, it is too large for the knife and adds unnecessary weight, this knife is easier to carry in your pocket without a clip. The back lock is also very strong, is easy to operate, and is more reliable and sturdy than a linerlock. Overall amazing knife. Spyderco boasts about the reliability and quality of their products, and this knife is an excellent representation of that mindset. ... show more

  • Not my favorite design, balance feels off, grip color is ugly, and the grip feels/looks cheap compared to Delica 4
The S110V steel is exceptional, but they used the cheapest FRN grips they could find. My Delica 4 has FRN grips, but somehow Spyderco made those FRN grips feel higher-end with a grainy texture and extra heft from the steel liners. This Native 5 is only about 2-3 grams lighter than the Delica 4, but the balance is way off. The blue color also isn't my favorite as it is too light. I wish they'd allow the S110V to go on a black handle Delica 4. The bulk of the weight is felt in the blade, while the Delica 4 is more balanced. After looking more closely at the specs and performance of the "super steels", I'm inclined to go with S35VN for a better balance of edge retention and ease of sharpening. The blade is great though, it came out of the box razor sharp like other Spydercos. I'm just not a fan of this overall package. Throw on a better feeling and looking FRN handle with black as a color option, with a black clip, and I would change my mind. ... show more

  • So light...
Interesting. It did not "feel" as sharp as my other knives, but a light pass on my forearm left hairs on the blade. Excuse me, it's very sharp. No problem with the opening/closing either. It is light enough that I have taken the pocket clip off and carry it in my pocket old school. G10 feels better and the extra oz of steel in the liner of the other Native 5 makes it feel more substantial. But, IMO that knife is a bit too heavy for me to pocket carry w/o a clip. This version is fine. ... show more

  • Great Knife, Bad Action
So I just got this knife and the first thing I noticed is the miserable action. The first opening of the knife took two hands to open. Impossible to open with the thumb and the forefinger of the holding hand. And closing the blade after releasing the back-lock is extremely difficult. I have a couple of spydercos and none of them behave like this. After some oil and some break-in things have barely improved. This is disappointing. With all of the ugly out of the way..... The size of the blade, the blade shape, sharpness, carry size in the pocket, and the feel in the hand are really quite outstanding. It would be the perfect EDC if I could it open and closed when I need it..... should have gone with the Manix despite the extra size penalty. ... show more
