  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Professional Quality Controller now made smart
I purchased this controller to replace a Hunter Pro-C irrigation controller which while working well, did not offer any wireless capabilities or intelligence to adjust with the weather beyond a rain sensor. I will update this review as I gain more experience in the intelligent adjustments. Decision: I narrowed the options down to this model and the Rachio. The Rachio had many more consumer reviews and was highly rated, but apparent downsides included a lower quality approach to wiring connections and adequate space inside controller to make the connections, limited ability to control the irrigation system completely from the touch screen as needed as well as my familiarity with the Hunter brand. Also many contractors tend to recommend the Hunter Pro-HC over the Rachio. Installation: Replacement of my existing controller was easy to perform. After taking a picture of all existing connections and labeling the wires, I removed the old controller and mounted the new controller to the wall in the same location. My wiring came into the controller through the wall so I drilled a hole in the back of the controller in the marked knock out space. Connecting all wiring leads was easy with the screw terminals. There is plenty of space to allow access to the wires and resulting in an organized installation inside the box. Configuration: The setup wizard on the controller touchscreen walked me through connecting to my home Wifi. I have a strong signal as relatively close to my access point inside. Once connected the controller touch screen presented the serial id which I used to enter into my Hydrawise account on my smart phone or PC. The remainder of the setup I did from the Hydrawise web page, which the wizard walked me through. Software: Both the web page and iOS app are relatively easy to use. They allow for a pre-defined schedule based on run times per zone and configured start times, both set days and times and interval based. Options then allow you to instruct how the system should increase or decrease watering run times based on temperature, rainfall, wind etc. You can also configure the system to utilize smart watering based on weather conditions. A schedule calendar view will show you the scheduled irrigation times, as well as any adjustments that have been made based on the weather conditions. When setting up your station you can select a free National Weather Service station if using the free plan, or local weather underground stations on the paid plan. If you have your own personal weather station broadcasting to Weather Underground you can submit that to Hunter who will update your account to use that station without paying for the paid service plan. Pros: Professional grade controller and case with well thought out connections. Made by a reputable irrigation company Support for up to 2 sensors. I have a wireless rain sensor connected and will plan to add a flow sensor in the future. Ability to control zones from my smart phone, and adjust schedule from phone or web page Can completely control irrigation system at the controller and will continue to run last schedule if loses internet connection Considerations: With the free plan schedule updates made online are only pushed to the controller once a day. The paid plan pushes scheduled updates hourly. Granted I will not be changing the schedule frequently but this loses a star for me. Also the controller seems to use a polling approach when controlling a zone manually from your phone or PC rather than an immediate push. When you select to manually run a zone from my phone, the app will typically say the zone will start in anywhere from several seconds to up to a minute - assuming that is the time till the next time the communication occurs rather than real time. If you are interesting in the software, you can set up a free account with out a controller, and configure a "virtual controller" to determine if the software meets your needs. Update after several months of use: Controller remains on line with no connectivity issues and the ability to adjust the schedule from my phone / web from my couch or while traveling has been a good benefit.. I added a Hydrawise flow sensor which provides good insight into water usage (although it appears to over estimate actual usage) but primarily provides alerts of unexpected water flow which could indicate a broken line. The cloud based logic has suppressed watering several times due to a high probability of rain. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to setup and use.
Easy to install, setup and run. You need to download the Hydrawise App for the easy setup. Either download on your phone, laptop or both. I replaced my old Hunter Pro-C with this one. It is great to have the ability to run it from my phone. Especially when checking zones for operating issues.

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Irrigation WiFi Choice
After careful research I decided on the 12 zone Pro-HC due to its WiFi functionality and previous reviews . I convert over from a non WiFi Toro GreensKeeper 212 which worked great however it was not WiFi . Took be about an hour to install . Wiring was easy and little need to read the manual if you have installed one before . The most difficult part was aligning the wires to come in the back of the panel and drilling out the extra knockout in the panel . Needed a 1in drill bit for that . The other installation item was to ensure you put you serial number in the App Wizard to ensure you can control it from your smart device . This should be obvious but I overlooked that and it worked fine but I spend about 15 min figuring this out . Once connected it was easy to program from the App and setting up the program was easy . Also needed to ensure you set up the location for you area you live in to ensure you get the appropriate weather data . The reliance on the weather data is great so that you don’t need to have it turn on in colder and wet times of the day . I tested remote on and off functions when I was away from home and it also worked great .Looking to see if the water bill shows some savings once I am watering thru the summer . I would recommend the Pro -HC if you’re looking for a WiFi irrigation controlled . Note: I control with iphone and a dual band router . No WiFi issues at all . ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Rich Functionality, Easy to Use and Install, Responsive Technical Support
I installed this product about one month ago. The installation was easy. If replacing a controller, the key is to mark the wires of all the zones prior to disconnecting them AND not remove these markings until the new controller has been fully installed and tested (I used tape). It works as advertised, can be managed via the Hydrawise app (by far the most preferable way), over the web or directly via the controller's touch screen. It has all the functions I have been using on my prior controller (a 10+ year-old PRO-C) and more but now can manage remotely. I love the date-driven zone watering suspension function (e.g., if today is September 29th, suspend watering for any or all zones through October 2nd). I also like the capability to review watering history by date, by zone. It's late in the season so I have not tried using the automated, weather-driven watering schedule modifications but will do so next season. Thus far I contacted technical support twice with questions via email and both times they responded within 24 hours. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Easiest Install Ever
I had a Hunter Pro C controller running my 12 station irrigation system including a wired rain sensor and pump. I shopped the local contractors to upgrade to the Pro HC. Installed cost for controller and installation ranged between $650 and $700. Found the Pro HC on Amazon from SprinklerPartsWholesale at just over $200. I thought I would take a shot at installing it myself. It could not have been easier. Disconnect existing unit from power, disconnect each station, com, pump, and sensor wire labeling or photographing each, remove panel from wall, mount new panel on wall, route each wire to its corresponding post, plug the controller in, and follow the simple instructions to connect to WiFi and set up watering schedule. This could not have been easier. 60 minutes total time from start to finish. SprinklerPartsWholesale actually beat the scheduled delivery by two days! Could not be happier. , ... show more
