The device is straightforward. There aren't any hidden fees, and all services all clearly explained. This is the most affordable entry in GPS communication. I highly recommend that any motorcycle riders who travel long distances or ride in poor cell service zones purchase a GPS communicator.

The Spot X gave me no problems during a week in the Rockies. It functioned as intended. Note that you will need a laptop or desktop to download & update the firmware prior to/during activation. Read and follow the activation instructions and you should have no functional problems with the unit. Once you've activated & subscribed the unit is fairly intuitive. The keys are small, (it is a full QWERTY keyboard) and typing in messages takes a little longer than on a smartphone. The typefont is on the small side and reading in direct sunlight can be difficult, not unlike a smartphone. I did not use the tracking function so I cannot speak to the accuracy, however, sending a "check in" message provides the Lat/Long & elevation of your location to the recipient. I returned device in 2 weeks. But my mistake was that I subscribed 1 year spot x service. After activation fee of $20 something, monthly $11 fee was charged: initially about $40. As I returned device, I cancelled the subscription (services) online immediately. But monthly payment was continuously drafted from my bank. Called customer service, found out ; "A one-year contract cannot be canceled in the middle and must pay $11 per month for a year term is finished". Please think carefully before signing a one-year contract. Because it is not a product that is used every day, but only used for outdoor travel, it is better to avoid a one-year contract as much as possible. When I heard that I couldn't cancel in the middle, I was shocked, but I accepted it because the amount was not large. However, I hope that there will be no victims like me. It is scary to think that even if you return it, it is not over. The battery charge was little too short than I expected. Good idea that we can text using the satellite. This device is not only emergency satellite SOS message, but can send regular text message through, which is very good feature this provide. ... show more

I already have several SPOT Gen 3's, so it made no sense to go to a different service. I like that I CAN use the Bluetooth and attach my phone to it, but I really like that I don't HAVE to attach my phone to it. Yes, the buttons are small. Yes, the backlighting could be better, but being able to message directly from the device is most important to me. And so far, the battery life is as advertised! I did go with the yearly unlimited message (and rescue) plan, but I spend a LOT of time out in the middle of nowhere.... I've only had it a few weeks, and I would have blown past the message limit easily. Does everyone need that plan? No. Everyone needs to look at where they go, and how much they need to message. This is a nice product. It boots up quicky and after an initial satellite find, it locks on really quickly. I know this will vary from location to location, but so far it's only taken a few minutes to get GPS. And it usually (again, this can vary widely), takes only a few minutes to send and receive texts to and from the SPOT. I would definitely recommend this to anyone that already has other SPOT devices, and needs the ability to text directly from the device. And if this is your first tracking/satellite device, you can't go wrong. I do sort of wish it had a AA battery back up, but I just carry a 10000 mAh pack. Make sure you have the charge cable though. Overall thoughts: Great piece of gear if you get remote. It makes it easy to keep my family in the know to where I'm at with the tracking function, and if I need them, or they need me, it's just a text away. I'm already trying to talk my hunting party into get one.... I would definitely recommend this item, and buy it again. ... show more
