  • family fun
Back at it with another review: This product I was excited about because I love family games. It had multiple games in this one pack. So, we could choose a new one each night. To get the papers back you only need a pc and printer. instructions are easy to understand, and the thrill is great. Definitely something I would buy as a gift for teens for sure. ... show more

  • All around awesome game!
I received this game free of charge from Spin Master as part of a promotion so I could provide my opinion on the product, even if I had not received it for free, it is something I would buy for game night. 5 of us played the first level called Prison Break tonight. Our ages range from 17-35 years old. It was a blast and really made us think things out. None of us had ever payed a board game like this although we have all been wanting to try and escape room for a while. First of all the game comes packaged really nicely in all 4 scenarios are clearly marked. You are only supposed to open the scenarios in order and one at a time. I would suggest you completely read the instructions before you play and allow plenty of time for instructions and set up before starting the timer. The scenario is timed for 1 hour each, and they get progressively harder to solve. The prison break scenario is the one we did. It had 3 parts and for us the second part was the hardest. You do get hints with each section though that make it easier to get through. However at one point we were stuck and the one hint we got just gave the answer but didn't explain how to get it. That made it to where we were still stuck figuring out the rest of the clue on how to solve for the other half of the answer. I feel like it would have been better to give hints on how to work out the formula used. The Chrono Decoder takes 3 AA batteries that are not included so be prepared, you have to have them in order to play. The decoder has the timer on it and I thought it was really cool that it gives you a "ding" when it's time to read the next hint. Also make sure each person has a pen or pencil and plenty of scrap paper to work out their ideas, math problems, ect. The game is very well made and the scenario we played was great. it is definitely made for older teens/adults. There are math equations, and puzzles that I am not sure younger kids may have learned yet. I would say use your own judgement as there are some kids with better math skills then adults. I gave it a 4/5 for the single fact that you can only play each scenario one time. For me that does make the price point of $40 a little high. However I did see that they are planning to make expansion packs so that is a plus. Our next game night we will play the second scenario "Virus" and I plan on going to the website and downloading their app so that we can have the thematic music to play in the background. ... show more

  • A fun family game but not replayable
We had fun playing this game together. The game is definitely designed for families with younger children as the hint cards will ultimately tell you how to get past the phase you are in. You have 60 minutes to work through some brain teasers based upon what they give you. The down sides are, the accompanying app doesn't include an end-game picture option for "not" escaping. That could be humorous. Secondly, if they printed the hint cards to not allow players to get the final answer or provide some way to deduct time if you use a hint card, that would be great. Lastly, the game is sorely under-supplied. The base game comes with just 4 rooms. Once you've played those 4 rooms there is little point to playing the game again as you've already solved the puzzles. So playing it again you're guaranteed to do well once your memory kicks in on how to solve the room. They did release two expansion packs (rooms). However, I think they'd need to release them faster to keep customers interested. Bottom line: It's an inexpensive family game that parents and kids are sure to enjoy. Just remember if you're a controlling mom or dad, to leave your emotions at the door as children can get easily frustrated and take your team off track with their shenanigans and own emotions. ... show more

  • Don't buy it until you're ready to play!
I ordered this around Christmas but just played it for the first time three months later. The electronic "Chrono Decoder" feels light and cheap and the first mystery was the odd rattle coming from inside. With the batteries installed, it lit up and appeared to be working. We started the clock and opened the first envelope regarding the prison break. After a slow start, we eventually settled on a code and dropped the four "keys" into the slots only to hear a loud BUZZ indicating an incorrect answer and one minute penalty. We rechecked everything and decided to change one key. Nope--BUZZ! Were we holding the box backwards? Wrong--BUZZ! New idea, maybe we need to insert the keys faster--BUZZ! Right to left--BUZZ! Simultaneously--BUZZ! We consulted the instruction manual to no avail. Eventually we decided to look at the clues because between figuring it out and all our incorrect guesses, our time was now below 30 minutes and no one was having fun. Low and behold the final clue just gives you the code, which we had been trying all along. We tried it again and again with no luck. Because the battery case access requires a screwdriver (why?), I decided I had had enough and opened the entire thing up. It was immediately clear one of the sensors inside the box was dangling freely and the plastic side of the slot that holds it in place had snapped off, causing the unusual rattle. An on-the-spot fix was possible, but probably not permanent. With everything put back together, we restarted the game and very delicately inserted the key into the third slot as to prevent any future damage. Success! We finished the final two stages and all was well. Hopefully this might help someone else before getting frustrated and smashing the decoder against a wall. I contacted Spin Master Games about the issue and this was their response: "We are very sorry to hear about your broken Chrono Decoder. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer a replacement for the decoder." They also mentioned a 30-day "customer support period," with proof of purchase, "incase[sic] a replacement is applicable." Not sure if they would be willing to replace the decoder if we had contacted them within the 30 days, so my advice would be hold off on buying this until you are ready to play. Unfortunately there's no way to open the game after purchase and test it to make sure it's working without spoiling one of the four puzzles. I was planning on packing this back up after playing the four scenarios and giving it away, but because the decoder is so flaky, I wouldn't want to put anyone through the frustration we had with this purchase. ... show more
