  • Perfectly usable if you can sharpen
Style: CBP95 9 ½ Block Plane
Get your flat surface(shelf?) and 120 grit ready, because you will have to remove a lot of material to correct the poor factory quality control and get this flat. But once you do, it's a great tool for the price. Unlike what some of the other commenters seem to insist, it's completely possible with patience and determination. I spent about an hour or two getting this plane from the box into the state shown in my pictures. I think what the others were doing wrong was not starting on a low enough grit, because it would take forever to flatten this on a stone. I used 120 - 400 - 600 - 1000 - 1200 and stropped the blade, and it worked like a treat. The plane now shaves straight through walnut end grain, so I'm happy; that's honestly more than I expected to get. One note is that the logo is actually a sticker. I thought it was stamped or engraved but it fell right off, and now it looks cleaner without the logo. ... show more

Finicky to adjust but for dollar value it suffices for occasional use

  • Good value
Style: CBP65 6 ½ Block Plane
Out of the box sole and iron were 99% flat and true. A little sandpaper on the sole and normal iron sharpening and it was cutting perfect shavings. Even a $250 Wood River or similar needs the same thing. This is not a $350 Veritas. The frog was good, the sole and iron are good and the adjustments are easy. This is a great value for a beginner to practice setting up and using a plane for DIY weekend work. I have no idea how long the iron will stay sharp or the adjustments will remain true. But 1st impression is that it will definitely do what I want and was less than $25. I will be ordering the extra blade ... show more

  • Good price but expect to work on it a lot.
Style: CBP65 6 ½ Block Plane
The price is reasonable, and the plane can be a good investment, if you are willing to put in a lot of effort to make it work. The sole of the plane I bought was not flat at all. I spent hours sanding the sole to get it flat. I needed to sand the sides of the adjustable mouth plate, since it was binding. Neither side of the plane blade was flat, so that took a lot of sanding before I could even sharpen it. It took a while to sharpen the blade since it looks as if they used some sort of small diameter cutting wheel to cut the bevel, as there is a definite concavity within the bevel. I had to oil everything since all of the controls on it where very stiff. I had to take a file to the mouth of the plane to smooth it out. I also had to sand the bed of the plane since it was roughly machined. I also had to sand the lever cap so it could set flush on the blade and apply even pressure. Once all of that was done, the plane has been working very well, except for a little too much play or backlash on the blade adjustment system that makes precise adjustments a little difficult. ... show more

  • Poor blade quality as shipped
Style: CBP95 9 ½ Block Plane
The information says that the blade is ground at a 25 degree angle and all you need to do is hone it to a 30 degree angle. That may be okay if the blade did not have several major divots in it, bad enough that I had to regrind the blade to the 25 degree angle before I was able to hone it at the 30 degree angle. Quality control seems to be lacking, even a novice can grind a blade without major divots. ... show more

  • For the money, it works. Probably not for a professional, but good enough for my DIY housework!

For the money, it works. Probably not for a professional, but good enough for my DIY housework! It came full of oil from the factory, but a quick wipe down and a little adjustment made it cut just fine.
