Description

Master Precision Metal Working with These Classic ManualsHere are two classic machining manuals from the legendary South Bend Lathe Works. Originally these thorough and well-illustrated instructions were included with each new lathe or shaper purchase shipped from the South Bend manufacturing plant. Today they are still practical instruction manuals also valued for their historic information.Filled with detailed illustrations and photographs, both How to Run a Lathe and How to Run a Metal Working Shaper cover every aspect of operation of these basic machine tools. Company founders John and Miles O'Brien consider the full spectrum of lathe applications, beginning with how to measure accurately, and review everything from plain turning to cutting screw threads. The metal-working shaper is a precision tool for creating flat surfaces or making objects with odd shapes or angles. Every shaping process is precisely explained with the aid of dozens of well-crafted images. The O'Brien Brothers founded South Bend Lathe Works in 1906, and it became the dominant manufacturer of precision metal working lathes throughout the world for most of the 20th century; their machine tools are found in countless machine shops and vocational schools. The company still thrives today as South Bend Lathe.Added to this combined edition are up-to-date safety instructions, considered essential today yet often overlooked when these manuals were first written. Whether setting up your first lathe or wishing to master precision machining skills, this indispensable book belongs in your workshop. Read more

  • Good book on machine tool operation
It is a good reference book for someone who is a beginner to metal machine tools. I wish it was a little larger. It has a lot of good illustrations and tons of tips and tricks. The price is OK. Much of the info is available on the internet but not in a complete form like this. I recommend this book for those who are new to machine tools. ... show more

  • Not what I expected.
Basically it’s all about the products without any instructions.
