  • This head unit is perfect!
Couldn’t as for much more in a head unit. So many features and audio setting to make you factory or after market system sound phenomenal!

  • Great unit. Just get it.
Installed in 2009 tundra SR5 with an adapter bundle and it worked great. Love the swivel option and the wireless CarPlay. The 3 camera is a fantastic feature that definitely is commanding a big price for the unit but I wish it was a 4 camera option for the front and sides too. Sounds great even on a stock anemic oem speakers. Very highly recommended. I’m sure the prices will come down eventually. ... show more

  • So much better than AX8100
I purchased this reciever to replace the AX8100 that came installed in my 2024 Entegra Odyssey. The number one issue I had with the 8100 was the inability to see the screen with polarized sunglasses, the screen just appeared solid black. The screen on the 8500 allows the use of polarized sunglasses. Additionally the screen is much clearer, and sharper and shows less glare than the 8100. The audio is also substantially improved over the 8100. Even with the same speakers it sounds amazing. Android Auto works wirelessly connecting automatically. No regrets on this purchase at all. I am very happy with the unit. ... show more

  • Love the size
We really love the size of screen. Looking forward to taking off on a trip. So easy to use. The only issue is the tilt. It is not as easy as they show in video.

  • Excellent Headunit but Wireless Android Auto is Buggy
UPDATE: It's become clear that all the issues I had been having were because of very buggy Android Auto releases. I haven't had any issues or a need to hard reset the unit since Google's 12/10 13.3.644654 release. Everything is rock solid, and I haven't had any of the garbled voice issue since the update. Sony's support is still the worst, but this is a review of the head unit and it's awesome! UPDATE: Android Auto version 13.1.646704 has significantly improved stability. It appears that the XAV-AX8500 isn't completely at fault. I still occasionally have garbled sound on phone calls which does still lead to the unit becoming flaky and locking up. I'm bumping my rating to 4-stars but will never leave 5-stars due to a complete lack of support from Sony. This is a great replacement for the OEM navigation system in my 2015 Jeep Wrangler. It sounds great. Its hinge is unique and allows four different mounting adjustments plus screen tilt and swivel once installed. The HD floating screen is beautiful, gapless, and virtually glare free. The Sony interface is simple, uncluttered, visually appealing, very fast, and responsive. Its price point is excellent for a 10.1" floating screen that supports advanced features like Maestro integration. Finally, the third-party camera looks great after an upgrade to firmware v2.0.1 even though the unit doesn't support HDR or AHD signaling. The new firmware also added a digital clock instead of the analog clock that felt out of place in my Wrangler. The only significant missing feature for me is radio station favorites. I have to scroll through all the channels or manually enter a station. It's weird and inconvenient. Sony, please add this feature in the next firmware update! Why only a 3-star rating instead of five stars? The wireless Android Auto connectivity is great when it works but the connectivity is abysmal and makes the AX8500 unstable and unreliable. 1. Phone calls often come through garbled and robotic even though the other party can hear me fine. 2. Volume control occasionally fails and the volume jumps either way up or completely off. 3. The unit will occasionally lock up and become completely unresponsive. 4. Android Bluetooth almost always has a problem connecting even when Android Auto and audio appear to be working OK on the radio. Android Bluetooth settings asks me to turn the Sony device off and back on which doesn't resolve the warning. I've tested with Pixel 7, 8 and 9 with Android versions 14 and 15. They all have the same issues. I purchased the AX8500 mostly for Android Auto connectivity so I can't recommend it despite its otherwise amazing build and features. If Android Auto isn't your thing, then I highly recommend it. I'm sticking with it for now and hoping no matter how unlikely that Sony fixes the Android Auto issue in a future firmware update. For now, I hard reset the unit by holding the power button for 10 seconds before every drive. ... show more

  • CarPlay texting doesn’t work
The media could not be loaded. I purchased this unit specifically for the CarPlay functionality. It was professionally installed. Unfortunately, the unit is glitchy and does not allow user to send voice messages. While CarPlay works fine in all other vehicles, I haven’t been able to get this unit to work reliably with several different phones. While factory resets will restore the functionality temporarily, it reverts to being unable to send messages within a short period. Very frustrating. I recommend avoiding this product. ... show more
