  • A sound bar well above my expectations
I first want to say that when it comes to home theatre sound, I'm pretty picky. I have my own "home brew" setup for home theatre with KEF speakers and subwoofer driven by an Emotiva AV Receiver and other such gear. A few years back I tried one of these sound bars (different brand) and was pretty disappointed. However, since I got my Sony Bravia TV last year, I wanted to give one of these Sony sound bars a try. Why because in as much as I enjoy my current HT system, it really takes quite a bit of space and have to be careful with cabling, wiring, etc. So, let's call it a want for convenience. After trying it for over a week (including a 48h break-in period) below are my thoughts: * Sound fidelity: one of the informal tests I run with all my audio equipment is sound fidelity. I want to hear, before all equalization and any spatial effects, how the audio compares with my reference monitors. In this regard the sound bar does well, though I wasn't expecting much because it's not the "job" of a HT bar to be clinical or reference. But again, all things considered, did pretty well. * Another thing I like to test on these small-format speakers is the low range/bass. This is challenging for these because at certain point physics will limit how low a speaker of that size can go. However, this bar did very well. Full-body, chest pumping lows could definitely be felt. Again, you can't compare with a 10 or 12'' dedicated subwoofer, but for the size, it's pretty fantastic. * Immersion. A key aspect of any HT system is the sense of immersion/spatial effects. This unit is impressive in this respect. While watching Dune 2, my wife and I kept looking at each other because this sound bar had us impressed. We felt truly the sounds were coming from the right direction and those lows and special sound effects came through amazingly. I also tried it with Elden Ring -- which, btw, has possibly the best purpose-made music of any RPG out there -- and was very pleased with how well the sound effects and the music came through. Spatial sound was especially helpful for PvP. * Misc: Sony recommends you install an app on your phone to control and setup this sound bar. This is wholly unnecessary step. You can just hook your ARC/eARC into it and presto! Ready to go. We're still undecided whether we want to go through the process of hanging the TV and bar of our wall. We like it in the little shelf and our PS5 and other players hook easily into it. Overall, I'm very impressed with this sound bar. It certainly punches far above its weight and far above my expectations. Unreservedly recommend it. ... show more

  • Amazing sound in a small soundbar
I have a really nice 65" Sony TV and have used a regular Sony receiver with 7.1 speaker system that handles Dolby Atmos etc really well. It took me a bit of time to get that all configured to my liking. Still at times depending on the show/channel it feels lost a little especially with voice. But the 360 is amazing. On to this soundbar....it's my first that has 11 speaker Atmos capabilities.I've had a few others over the years but nothing top of the line like this Sony. I'm very impressed....it was quite amazing when I first heard the Nature Forest demo track that the app has. You have to hook this up with a couple of cables, one is included but you need another to make the full connection. There's an app that runs you thru the process of getting this calibrated for your room and the distance you will be from the tv. I recommend using this process to make sure you have the optimum settings. There are few settings that can be changed once the process is done via the app. I did however run into a few problems when setting it up. I kept getting a cannot setup due to network error but there wasn't any. I had to reboot the app and it worked...don't know why. The one issue i found was the way the plugs go into the soundbar. I had to get a new HDMI cable because the one I had was too big to fit in the in port of it. The end part was too wide where the plug is. I get that it needs to be sideways because this can be wall mounted but there needs to be a little more room for various size plugs. This comes with a remote control but you can also use the app on your phone to control volume etc. This handles 4k/120 so it should be just fine for PS5 etc. There's only on input port so if you have a streaming box, PS5, BluRay player and any other inputs you'll need to get yourself an HDMI switch box but make sure its compatible with Dolby Atmos 4k/120hz. I go the 8k Kinivo box and it works no problem. Sound....wonderful and surprising on how a small narrow bar can output such clear intense sound. However, comparing it to my 7.1 setup I think you really would need the separate rear satellite and subwoofer speakers for this to really be amazing.....not that it isn't as is don't get me wrong. It is quite amazing but I felt there was some empty areas that needed to be filled with more surround sound and those additions would complete this system to give it the full 360 experience. These additional speakers are all expensive though so you'd be spending another $700 for the subwoofers and $600 on the rear speakers (for the high end versions) which is like another $1,300. That becomes a pricey setup but it would be well worth it for those who really want the absolute full experience. There are other systems like the Nakamichi Shockwafe Ultra 9.2.4 which is about $1,400 for bar, 2 subwoofers, 4 rear/side satellites the sound is loud and decent, needs some equalizing via the app not quite as good as Sony so for me this Sony wins hands down. For now the soundbar is good enough for the time being until I can add those additional speakers on. I felt the sound had just the right amount of center channel for voices which was great I didn't need to tilt my head on some shows and movies to strain to hear what was said. There are times where i felt the sound had a little muffled tone to it and wish I could equalize it on my own to my sound preferences. There are a few settings but not any advanced that I would like. But again, i'm being critical with this review. I've had many sound systems over the last 20 years and the newer ones have come along way especially this one. It will give you everything you expect and more. The sound is amazing and really gives you that movie theater experience at home. ... show more
