  • 10,000 BTU w/heat & wifi
This will be a review of its use as a heat pump. My old floor gas 35,000 BTU floor furnace quit in the midst of a cold snap in early December here in the southwest. Can't get it fixed or replaced reasonably soon, and gas rocketed up to $5/therm for the winter here making heat pumps more cost-effective even with our high electric rates ~$0.50/kWh. Overall, this unit exceeded my expectations and I would recommend it. The saddle design is great. INSTALL: Received the unit 2 days after ordering and install was mostly routine in under two hours. The only hiccup was making the seal between the top of the unit and the bottom of the window frame. Because the unit's top sags slightly side-to-side, and the metal bracket for the dense foam side blocks is raised a bit, a single foam strip couldn't completely fill the gap. Fortunately the package included enough excess strip to cut a 2nd strip to the width of the unit. Had to bevel this 2nd foam strip's ends to ensure a good seal. HEAT: In heat mode it puts out a lot of warm (not hot) air. Not as quick to heat as my old furnace, but handles the 500 sf it needs to cover and actually does a better job at pushing heat into a couple of other rooms than the old passive furnace. NOISE: This is probably the biggest negative for us. The 48 dB(A) at 1 meter reading for indoor in the specs is based on AC use, which I haven't used yet. But in heat mode I'm reading 55 dB(A). Also wish the fan's "quiet" setting was quieter. But we're used to using window A/Cs so it's tolerable. VIBRATION: When the unit is ramping, certain compressor speeds have some sort of resonant vibration that actually shakes the walls of our house mildly. I'm going to try some soft rubber pads to put between the outdoor supports and the exterior wall. May put some inside too. POWER CONSUMPTION: I have it running through a killawatt device. It ramps between about 400w & 1100w. Seems to spend more time around 500w. We're running it quite a lot still and it's averaging about 3-4 kWh per day. If the $5 gas lasts for a few months this thing will probably pay for itself. THERMOSTAT: The temperature sensor is at typical location on most window ACs, right in front of the indoor coil, which affects its temperature readings somewhat. It works okay, but a remote sensor would be better. As another reviewer mentioned, the remote can function as a remote temp sensor, but it unfortunately messes with setting. WIFI: The wifi setup was easy and the wifi app works as described. On the plus side it allows multiple scheduled ON and OFF times by day of week and time. On the downside it does not provide capability to set other controls such as Set Temperature, Fan Speed, or Mode. I'm considering getting a Mysa controller for the remote temp sensor and possibility of scheduling more settings, but still waiting to hear back from them or Soleus on its compatibility with this unit and whether it can control all settings. ... show more

  • 10000 BTU Model
We have a 6000 model which has been great and is what led us to purchase the larger model for our bedroom. We had been looking to install a multi-zone minisplit, but given the quotes around $12k and that we're likely moving in a year or so, we went all in on these "saddle" AC units (and the window kit as all of our windows are sliders - incidentally, the window kit works great). The new 10k BTU model can both heat and cool, and also uses an inverter to increase efficiency. This is certainly a beta product. Operation - I suspect 90% of people will purchase this device to use as an AC only device - Other than setting the device to "Cool," every other setting (such as eco or sleep) allows the device to switch to either heating or cooling. This is problematic if you're wanting the device to turn off the fan when it's the device isn't cycling. There really needs to be a few more options to allow for heating or cooling only in addition to modes such as eco or sleep. It really shows that this is their first "saddle" AC unit which can effectively function as a heat pump since the ability to manage the modes isn't well considered. Noise - We have a Midea portable unit which also uses an inverter and that unit can be nearly silent at times - that portable unit is actually what this new device replaced in order to free up some floor space. Inverter ACs are generally expected to be some of the quietest on the market (and more expensive.) Fridges with inverters for their compressors are often nearly silent. This thing is fairly loud, although it's not the compressor that's to blame. The fan on the Soleus is very loud, even on the "quiet" setting - on my iWatch the dB sits around 45 positioned about five feet away from the device - considering that if you set it to "Cool" mode so that it won't randomly start blowing warm air, the fan will be on constantly, all night long - at 45dB, this is problematic and I'm having to wear ear plugs. When the device has been off, the compressor seems to turn on first, run for a bit, then the fan itself turns on - it seriously sounds like a jet spooling up to take off before the fan turns on and gets much louder than the 45db when the fan and compressor are both running. Thermostat - This device is affected a fair amount by both the temperature outside as well as the condenser coils themselves - this is a problem given that on almost all the settings the device can also heat. On "Eco" mode the fan will turn off, and the condenser coil that's still cool will cool the air around the thermometer causing the device to believe that the room is now colder than it should be... so to maintain the desired temp, it switches over to heat things up. Not economical. Now, I'm sure Soleus will point out that the remote has a "My Temp" option which effectively works as a remote thermostat for the device - this works OK, but the remote seems to supersede any other inputs, so if you change a setting on the app, or manually on the device itself, the remote will ultimately send a new temp update which also apparently instructs the device to resume whatever mode and temp had been set on the remote itself, effectively clearing out whatever changes you have just made. Sleep mode - The fact that this turns off the lights is a nice feature as the temperature display is very bright. Unfortunately I'm unsure the benefit of this mode as I can have the temp set at 68, and the room will be cooking at 75. Lowering the temp down to 66 (or lower) doesn't seem to prompt the unit to turn on - so much for "gradually" allowing the room to warm up over the course of the night. I just purchased a Mysa unit to control the device, so we'll see how effectively lobotomizing the unit's own controls improves the functionality and usefulness of the product. Why three stars when the individual components are two stars? The overall design of the device is unique and one of the few that works well for those of us with slider windows. It seems as though the firmware might be upgradable, so I'm hoping that someone at Soleus reads this review and fixes a few of these issues - many of them are software or interface issues, not necessarily hardware issues (except perhaps the temp issue), so they may be fixable if there's a possibility of an update. I would rate our 6000 cooling-only unit five stars in comparison and wish I had just gone with the 8000 unit as it likely would have been OK for our needs.... equating "inverter" with "quiet" as is generally the case with all other AC units was my own mistake. ... show more
