  • Works very well - Easy to use
This has worked amazingly easy for me. I've had no previous experience with SMD, and I managed to make several boards over multiple days without problems. Large platform, smooth and even temp. The only issue I ran into was the display reported a temp 12 degrees higher than actual, but that was fairly easy to apply a correction for - In my case I pressed and held the set button for 10 secs until the display changed. Short press the select multiple times until you see SC on the display, use the arrows to adjust the correction up or down (in my case down 12), then press the select button again. It'll show LCK after that. I just waiting then until it timed out. After that it was showing the correct temperature. It has a REX-C100 controller for the temp. ... show more

  • Looks solid but the manual is practically non-existent
This hot plate looks pretty well put together but comes with only a bare-bone manual, which only tells you how to adjust the temperature set point. But it includes no instructions for adjusting the PID controls and other settings of the temperature controller. It would be somewhat understandable to omit these if the controller was so well tuned with the heater that further adjustments would not be necessary. But this is actually not the case: the temperature controller appears to be set up with its default parameters that are not particularly well matched to the heater properties. This is probably why some customers reported that the efficiency of the temperature control is sub-optimal. It is not a huge deal, the hot plate will still do its job, but it just takes much longer than necessary to reach the set point. Some reviewers complained that the customer service told them that the PID controls are not adjustable. That is not true: this hot plate uses a fairly standard, adjustable temperature controller. If you want to tinker with the controller, you can find the description of the commands and settings for a very similar controller, REX-C100, which seem to be applicable for this model as well. ... show more

  • Good Hot Plate!
I like the Soiiw 110V 850W Soldering Hot Plate LED Microcomputer Electric Preheat Soldering Station. It is not very accurate, but it gets hot enough for me. Mine shows about 24C lower than the setting temp when set to 200C. The most I will probably ever need is 600F, and it gets that hot easily. For me that is acceptable for the price of the unit. Electronics Repair is one of my hobbies, so I'm pretty sure that I could take the unit apart and make the temp more accurate if I needed to. But I use my Brymen 869s or Fluke to measure the temp anyway, so it isn't that big of a deal for me. I went ahead and gave it four stars on accuracy. Your unit may be more accurate than mine. ... show more

  • Surprised how well this works.
Surprised how well this works, it made it quite easy to use a solder paste template with my boards. The only downside is that it does not have any reflow curves, and heats up a little slowly.

  • Just used for mobile phone repair
Have not really used it a lot, just to repair phones - needed 70C and 80C temperature. But i also tested how accurate the temperate us up to 280C, and it does stay nicely within +- 1C. Measured with a digital thermometer that i attached to the middle of the surface with some CPU heatsink compound paste. I corrected the SC temperature offset in the configuration by 1C though. It does take a while to get up to temperature. ... show more

  • Well constructed but needs some tuning
The unit seems like it is well built, with a nice fly-cutter finish on the aluminum plate, but it took a long time to come up to temperature. I found a resource online with some tuning parameters and after plugging these values in it comes to temp much faster without overshooting. The measured temperature on the controller is for the aluminum surface, so you might want to put a scrap pcb on it and measure the temperature of the board to get a better understanding of what is happening at the pads. The boards I need to rework have some through hole components that keep the board from setting down flat, so I use a shallow pan with a thin layer of sand to transfer the heat. ... show more

  • Works well, better quality than I expected
Given the low price compared to other hotplates I've looked at, I expected this thing to be junk. Surprisingly it is well-made. The top surface is machined aluminum, resulting in a uniformly flat surface! My single complaint, which is not a big deal, is that it takes a long time to heat up or cool down. That's because the top plate is big. There's much mass to heat or cool. Once it gets up to temp, it stays there within reason. I've used it for surface mount soldering and desoldering to reclaim components from old PCBs. It works great for both purposes! ... show more
