    • A page turner, worth you time
My wife read this book. She suggested I would enjoy it. I looked at the title and said “really”? You think I would like a book that from the cover was certainly geared toward women? And, from the early reviews was a self help book? So, I said naw, not for me. Obviously, I did read it, and was surprised how enthralling and poignant it was. Ms LaGraff expresses herself with a writing maturity that I couldn’t believe it was her first. She easily conveys her life story with ease that immediately takes the reader along with her. ( I grew up in the rural south also). This is not a rags to riches story. No horrible parents. No poverty to overcome. That being said, she dealt with tragedy’s and circumstances that most readers have never experienced. No spoiler alert here. She details her thoughts and feelings with amazing grace ( no pun intended) . Look, just get the book. It’s not long. It’s certainly a page turner. You won’t regret letting Ms LaGraff tell her story of loss, heartbreak, betrayal and joy all in a short 350+ page book ... show more

    • Reflection of a Life Journey
Being at an age of my own self reflection, I found Karen’s memoir to be heartfelt with an underlying theme of determination and resilience. She shares the most intimate details of her life struggles. Karen writes in a way that allows her readers to feel like they are walking beside her and witnessing her life events. Her expressive details of both sorrow and joy pull you in and hold your attention to the end. I started reading her journey and was so captivated that I didn’t want to put it down.     • A life well lived
"So Much for the White Picket Fence: A Memoir" by Karen Campbell LaGraff takes the reader on a spell bound life journey filled with emotion and promise. Her upbringing has prepared her to deal with the losses and successes she encounters, by relying on the love and acceptance of both family and friends. Ms. LaGraff brings the reader along on her journey as if a partner in the story rather than as a spectator. By the end of the book, which is definitely a page turner, lessons have been learned on how to give one's best to those we have chosen to love, regardless of what circumstances may accompany those relationships. It’s tough to tell a lifelong tale and hold a reader’s interest, but Karen LaGraff makes it look easy. We’re right there in the moment with her for each high and low, yet without losing sight of the overarching theme(s) of the book. She’s able to do that through her unsparing honestly and ability to let us walk in her shoes and see ourselves in her life stories and observations.     • Life can be messy, a good read!
Being in the same age group and coming from the Appalachians I guess we all dreamed of white picket fences and living happily ever after. Karen is a very good story teller and pulls you in as she opens up to tell us her story. She takes us with her through heartbreak, growing pains, marriage, challenges of raising a family and death of aging parents. But it’s not all bad there are happy times as well. It’s life and it’s never all rosy and sometimes messy but Karen puts it into words and shares her life with us. I recommend, a good read. ... show more

A friend suggested I consider "So Much for the White Picket Fence" as a possibility for our book club. The title intrigued me so I decided to read at least the first fifty pages. Once I got to that point, there was no stopping. Starting with her story of her first true love, this author's life has had its share of ups and most definitely downs. She doesn't ever try to come off as a "victim," but faces her challenges with more strength and courage than most of us possess. It's a journey that will enrich and inspire all of us who have searched for our own white picket fence. ... show more

It is important to read this book, not expecting a literary masterpiece, but anticipating a personal story told with honesty and courage. The author bravely relives the multiple challenges she faced as she recounts years of navigating through difficult family relationships, determined to protect those she loved. Her story is told openly with heartfelt emotion.     • You will laugh, you will cry, and you will have hope as you feel her every emotion!
I'm that person that has several half read books on the nightstand. NOT this one! I read it in 3 days! It's captivating the way Karen LaGraff takes you along every twist and turn of her life's journey while sharing authentic raw emotion. Having only dealt with one of the major life struggles covered in her journey, I'm in awe at her resilience and determination to live a well lived life! For anyone feeling the least bit "woe is me", you need to read this book for a good dose of perspective and you will be inspired! ... show more
