this product was absolutely amazing. We have been dealing with huge amounts of snow in the Northeast this year. Ice dams are on every roof, and it was only getting worse. I couldn't find a roof rake in a store to save my life, and I stumbled upon this on Amazon and it was one of the only options available with Prime shipping to get it before the next storm was due. I couldn't be more happy to have found it, it turned what was a six hour job into less than one hour to complete. I do have a ranch house that has a low roof so that made it much easier to use than I would imagine on a two story house. The snow came right off as the plastic chute made of perfect track for it. it can be kind of heavy when holding it by the very end of the handle, it was still a work out to clean the snow off the roof but this product made it much much easier. I would easily recommend this to anybody in need of a roof rake, I would imagine it would be easier to use soon after a storm before the snow has time to harden on the roof. I used it about 4 days after a heavy snowfall but the temperatures were very cold so the snow did not melt or get hard. It is well built and very sturdy but I can see the plastic sheet wearing out or as others have said, getting caught on something and possibly tearing. Assembling the avalanche roof rake was simple and done in about 10 minutes. The little handle to roll up the plastic sheet does not work at all. it is stated in the instructions that the manufacturer will not warranty the plastic as it is a wear item. I could see myself using this on a second story roof on a ladder, but I am also very comfortable on a ladder as I work on them and around them daily. For your average homeowner, I would probably not suggest this product and using it on a ladder for a second story roof. The handle is not long enough in my opinion. I was able to stand atop a 4 foot step ladder, I don't suggest anybody doing that, and I could reach my entire roof, as I stated I have a ranch home and it is not a very large roof ... show more

  • Update to original review. Superb Design for Snow Removal From Roofs
I finally got to use this and it works really great as advertised. It's nice that the handle comes in pieces, even though that makes it a bit more difficult to handle, because you can take it apart for storage and transport. I still highly recommend this product. I am so happy that it has not snowed enough to use this yet! However, I saw a video of this in use so I made my own. The design is perfect! Just slide it into the snow and swoosh, the snow flies down the slide to the ground. I ended up with 8 feet of snow around my house, but none on the roof. Anyway, my home-built frame was too weak so rather than design a new one I opted to buy the real thing after convincing my self that it would really work. After opening the box though I noticed one thing that I wish was better. The chute is not long enough for the snow to slide down it and off the roof. I am worried that when clearing the topmost portion of roof that it will leave a big pile on the lower part of roof that will have to be cleaned off. If that's the case, I will probably put an extension on the chute. Keeping in mind that I have actually not used this but something similar of my own design, I can offer some suggestions if you buy this. First, get an extension for the handle. I had to do half of my roof on a ladder in order to reach most of it and my handle was longer than this one is. Second, this thing is hard to handle when it is not on the roof. Most of the weight is 16 feet away from you. Just lifting it from the ground up to the roof takes some effort. That 16 feet also means that it is 16 feet closer to electric wires, tree branches and anything else overhead. And finally, watch out for the wind! You've got a 16 foot sail on a flimsy mast. If the wind catches that while you're trying to move it into position it might just sail away - and, if you hold on tight enough it could take you with it. Despite the issues, this is the best solution for removing snow from your roof that I've seen. Compared to a regular snow rake it will save you hours of work cleaning snow. I highly recommend this if you don't want to pay someone else to clean your snow. ... show more
