  • It is what it says

I’m happy with this product. I have not used a damn thing out of it yet, but for the amount of time I spend on my boat, it’s only a matter of time.

  • Ok base for building a kit, but really not 'ready to use' Questionable value but nice case.
Style: 274PCS
This is a good start for building a kit but as delivered there is a lot of 'padding' to increase the number of items to market. I recommend modify before using. Too heavy and redundant as delivered to use for backpacking. The good: -The case is reasonably solid and lightweight. Being semi-rigid makes it predictable for packing and likely easier to find if in a bag with other items. -The flashlight seems to be good for such a kit - actually useful unlike many that are disposable. A single AA battery and it is good to go. I would prefer not to have a pushbutton switch (in case of accidental press turning it on and running battery down) but the kit case should help reduce this risk. -Fire starter rod - Your basic magnesium and sparker but I like that it is a good length rod. The scraper is adequate but I'd likely use a knife if in a hurry. Will have to play with it more to see how good it really is. -Whistle - Lightweight and loud, should do the trick if needed. -Knife : Not good enough as a primary knife but a decent backup. Blade came reasonably sharp so I think it could be useful. Not too heavy. The Bad: -The tweezers are virtually useless for this kit. Sure, could pick something up, but consider why you may need tweezers for first-aid/survival - removing a splinter with these would likely be an exercise in futility. (tossed) -The Scissors are like a toy. I can't imagine any use in emergency/survival for these. Not going to add anything to the situation that wouldn't be better provided by a sharp knife. -The "Multitool" - seems decent at first glance, then look closer at the tools it has. The 'saw' blade is too short to be of use (you could break any stick it could cut), the screwdriver Philips tip is tiny and rounded on the tip (i.e. what would it fit? not much). There is one possible bottle opener that could be useful, the nail file seems to be the best tool of the lot, but rather short to use. The main tool in this is the pliers that actually do look good if limited in size. All in all, for the weight it doesn't add much emergency value IMO. Better than nothing maybe... -The roll of tape is tiny, about 1/2in width. I'd replace with a small roll of wider more general tape for bandages (1" at least). Tape as a lot of uses, this 'check of the list' sample size really isn't worth carrying IMO. Given the number of redundant first aid items I dont' understand the skimpy tape here. -Compass: Very small dial and much heavier than it should be for what it is. Replace with a good lightweight one. On the bright side it does seem to find north reasonably well. -Multi-purpose survival tool. Seems a good idea, this one is small and heavy. The knife edge is dull, but maybe that is a good thing as anyone using it needs to push on this edge to use the wrench slot or the 1.5" serrated blade. Honestly can't see planning to use this in an emergency situation. Bottle opener is perhaps most useful piece on this but when pressed to survive I bet I can open that bottle without this tool. The Redundant: (How they get to advertise 241 items without adding a bit of value...) -Cotton swabs (q-tips): While I could see wanting a couple, the only possible use for so many in emergency that I can think of is to burn as tinder for a fire. Takes up space, but light. Removed all but 10. -SA bandages (band-aids): A comfort item for sure, but don't need to carry 50. Removed all but 10, at least I can restock later if used, supply should last a while. -Antiseptic wipes: Too many. Put all but four in the 'restocking' pile. -Cleansing Wipes: nice to have perhaps, too many in kit. Removed all but 4 -Alcohol preps: These are tiny, very little alcohol on them so perhaps a lot is good, removed 1/2 to backstock. Likely will replace with decent sized ones (if I need them I need volume to be of any value, I'm not going to be giving a vaccination shot in the woods) -Tools: I removed the multitool and the 'survival' thing from the kit (see bad section), but IF someone thought them useful, consider the redundancy and weight it adds... Final Thoughts: My use case is for active hikes/walks/etc so weight and size is important to me. After thinning and going through this kit, I don't know that the $20 price is terrible, but no bargain either. I will be replacing items (tape, lighter compass, tweezers, multitool) with more useful ones and adding to this kit before using it (i.e. 'mole' skin, ace bandage, gauze pads, sunscreen, antibiotic ointment, paracord). ... show more
