Frequently asked questions

The Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN is designed for Sony E-mount cameras. This includes Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras like the A7 and A9 series, as well as APS-C sensor cameras such as the A6000 series. It will not be compatible with Canon, Nikon, or other brand cameras without an adapter.

Absolutely, the Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN is exceptional for portrait photography. Its focal length, combined with the wide F1.4 aperture, offers a very shallow depth of field, resulting in beautifully blurred backgrounds (bokeh) while keeping the subject sharp. This lens is renowned for its ability to capture stunning detail and create a flattering perspective for portrait shots.

The Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN excels in low light conditions. The wide F1.4 aperture allows a large amount of light to enter the lens, making it ideal for shooting in poorly lit environments without sacrificing shutter speed or ISO. This makes it a great choice for indoor, evening, or any situation where lighting may be challenging.

The Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN weighs approximately 630 grams (22.2 ounces). While it's not the lightest lens on the market, it is designed to be more compact and portable than its DSLR counterparts. This makes it a great choice for photographers who are looking for high-quality optics without the bulk, especially for travel or on-location shoots.

  • 95% G Master Quality, 50% of the Price
Pros: Image quality out of this thing is beautiful. Bokeh rendering is stunning. So creamy. This lens is sharp wide open. Looks great. Flaring/ghosting is super well controlled for an 85 1.4 lens. It's definitely a step up from the older sigma art 85 1.4 in just about every way. I love that they are including aperture rings on their newer lens, and they're implementation is really pro. Cons: While lighter than the OG Sigma 85 1.4, this lens is definitely still heavier than the new GM 85 1.4 II. You will notice it. Now the biggest con to this lens, and it is still barely a con for most photographers and videographers, is going to be the AF speed. Don't get it twisted, this lens focus' really well in most situations. It's only when you have fast moving subjects or a subject wearing glasses where you start to see the difference between this lens and modern first party Sony lens'. Based on my experience, I would say this lens actually probably focuses about on par, or maybe a little bit better than the original Sony 85 1.4 GM, but is noticeably slower than the Sony 85 1.4 GM II. If you are shooting portraits, landscapes, still life, or lifestyle then you'll never notice these limitations. But once you start trying to shoot athletics, sports, kids running around, you will start to notice your hit rate drop a bit. In Summary: Technically the Sony 85 1.4 GM II has superior image quality. In reality, you will not notice the difference ever. This lens is very sharp, and actually performs better than the original GM lens that was incredibly popular for years. Unless you are planning to shoot sports with your 85mm... which I've done, but there are better lenses for that specific job even if the new G Master is capable of keeping up... then I can totally recommend this Sigma Art lens. I've included a few sample images I took when this lens first came in. ... show more

  • The most beautiful lens I own.
I love this lens. Yes, it’s a little pricey, but well worth every penny. This lens captures the most beautiful pictures that often times I don’t even feel the drastic need to edit. It’s a great size and not too heavy for being an 85mm. The quality is top notch. The auto focus is great but does seem to drain the battery somewhat faster than my sony lenses ... show more

  • Crisp and beautiful
This Sigma 85MM does and did not disappoint. You will get the bang for your buck with this lense, the images it produces are amazing! If you’re running and gunning it's auto focus system is pretty fast and sharp, being paired up with a Sony makes it even better. This lens has upgraded my production quality and value. Adding this to my inventory was definitely a good investment and decision. You won't be disappointed with it's performance! This Glass is really good! ... show more

  • The Sharpest Lens in My Bag
This lens is so sharp and crisp, and for the value its unbeatable. Sigma continues to produce world class glass. I am super impressed with the low light performance. At f/1.4, I can take this out during the dark and get great shots still. The f/1.4 aperture also gives you that creamy, buttery background bokeh that we all love. Finally, the focal length. This is pretty subjective, but I find 85mm to be the perfect focal length for portrait photography. It gives you just the right amount of background compression while still allowing you to step back a few steps and getting the entire individual, giving your pictures a super professional look. If you are looking for the ultimate portrait lens for your full frame Sony camera, look no further! ... show more

  • Hard to be for any price. Highest compliments to the Sigma team!!
This lens is a real pleasure to use (I have it in E mount and use it on Nikon Z7 with the Megadap E>Z adapter, which is also excellent BTW). This lens holds it's own against my Zeiss Otus 85/1.4 which pretty much says it all. When I need superlative 85mm 1.4 performance plus rocket fast autofocus, this has become my go to lens. For ~$1k it is a complete and total bargain. Other than the Zeiss Otus and Milvus 85mm 1.4 offerings , both of which are 2x or more the price, and neither of which have AF, the only other lens in this quality range is the Sony 85mm 1.4 GM, which is also excellent. I really like the work Sigma did to shrink this lens down from the previous 85mm 1.4 art. It feels half the size/weight with no apparent compromise in optics save for some easily correctible cushion distortion - and it might even be a touch sharper. The de-clickable aperture ring is easy to use and well designed, and the manual focus pull is very gradual and smooth, allowing precise fine tuning when necessary. A+ ... show more

  • Great Lens - Perfect for the A7RV
This is a great portrait lens and the wide aperture allows a ton of light and shallow depth of field. Stopped down you still get a great image even on high resolution sensors like the A7RV's.
