  • A little persnickity
Color: bronze
I often work from home and want to have a great video conferencing setup. For me this means a green screen with great lighting. Unfortunately, my new employer uses video conferencing software (WebEx) that doesn't natively support chroma key. This posed a challenge, how could I get a chroma key effect, like what Zoom provides, without installing additional software on my work machine? The answer? Use OBS on another machine and create an over the top video conferencing setup. Here's where things got challenging, although the device worked in any resolution with Google Hangouts and the occasional client Zoom call, WebEx would show the device as being present, but it would just show a gray screen. I tried different resolutions, and once in a while I'd get it to work, but most of the time, it was the gray screen. Finally, in a fit of frustrating, I decided to use a USB-C to USB-A cable and just put the device on the USB2 bus, and now it works fine. I'm not capturing 4k and USB2 provides enough bandwidth for HD Webcams, so this works, but I can't help but feel like the box is a little rough around the edges when it comes to USB-C/USB3. This was futher shown by how it needed to be directly connected to my MacBook Pro over USB-C, if I attempted to plug it into a USB-C port on my thunderbolt dock it would end up doing something that required me to unplug all USB-C devices before it, or any other USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 devices worked again. So, does the device work? Yes. Does it capture 4k? I dunno. I only go up to 1920x1080 right now. Does it let me do really great stuff with OBS for my video conferences? Yes. Was it unnecessarily frustrating? Yes. I have a hunch that this thing will continue to be frustrating. For my HDMI camera input I think I'll just go with Elgato Cam Link instead. ... show more

  • HDMI 3.0 works, well sort of
So I was hoping for a truly plug and play solution to capture video form my Nintendo Switch and XBOX One. What I got at first was a little bit perplexing. The HDMI pass through had issues initially, not sure if it was just a bad set of connections or it didnt like the switch box at first, but it took about 5 minutes to get just the pass through showing video. The pass through does look like it is 100% lag free, so good news there. Then the next problem arose, my laptop has limited USB 3.0 ports, but a lot of USB C ports which are 3.1 version 2 ports. So plugged it in and it kept freezing up after about 2 and 1/2 minutes or so or using it. It was easy to reset it, but yeah, every so often video frozen but the audio continued. SO, doing some quick research showed that the most likely culprit is not enough bandwidth dedicated to the device, so off to find my laptop documentation and get some USB C cables to move my USB hubs around on my laptop to isolate a controller. Luckily, that worked and the device seems to no longer be freezing. However, the brightness on the video capture seems to be real dark, and the adjustments in XSplit for the device seems to not really set the video during capture, so there is more to play around with to get this what I feel would be 100% A++ 5 Stars. It does work reasonably well with some futzing around with the device. ... show more

  • Pretty good but watch out for...
Works as described. Had what i thought was a critical problem ended up being a setting. If you use true tone or other auto adjusting color/brightness settings..turn this off other wise colors will be off. Had this problem on two MACs, a camera, a phone and a Surface. Once disabled worked okay. Other issue is that the device gets really warm when in use. It may cause issues if you have it in a cramped area where heat may gather. Possible fix is to use it in a port where there is more open air. Well worth the money once the color issue was figured out. ... show more

  • Surprised by how nice this device is
Color: bronze
After looking around at the various options this one seemed like a great value in terms of price to features so ordered one. It arrived 3 weeks sooner than promised. The packaging was Apple quality, quite impressive. What was really impressive was the device itself. I just assumed it was all plastic but it's actually all metal casing. The base is a nice red anodized aluminum, the top is black aluminum and between the fins are little blue lights that glow when you connect it to USB-C. I'm using it with a Sony RX100-V as a streaming webcam. It works flawlessly with my 2017 15-inch MacBook pro running OS 10.14.6(Mojave), HP Elitedesk 800 G4 running windows 10 64bit, and my 2020 MackBook air i5 running MacOS 10.15.4(Catalina). There was no software to install or anything... just connect all the cables and the camera shows up as "Mirabox" in apps like Zoom, Skype, OBS, etc. Also included in the box was an awesome white USB-C cable with some red anodized aluminum connector wraps along with a cool metal and nylon carrying strap. Overall i'm very impressed by the fit/finish/details and the product works flawlessly -- 5 Stars. ... show more

  • Important Thing To Make This Work!
Color: blue
So like some reviewers, I could not get my capture card to work with OBS or Streamlabs, which sucked because it said plug and play. First I tried on Mac with OBS, then went to Windows 10 OBS and Streamlabs. Tech support was not helpful at all, really only suggesting I contact the software companies. While I still haven't figured out how to make it work on Mac, on Windows you MUST plug this directly into a port on your computer, otherwise there is not enough power to drive it properly. If you are using even a powered hub (as I do) it still won't be enough. It took me some time to open a port for it but that's the world we live in when it comes to peripherals. Once plugged directly in, it will work as a video capture input source. I still recommend a separate source for your audio input and output, I use the Behringer U-Phoria UMD204HD and it works great on both Mac and PC. I hope this helps a few people who might have been struggling with the setup. I don't recommend this for Mac as even with a pretty solid knowledge base behind me I still can't get it to work on mine. ... show more
