I was looking for a carpet cleaner that fit all that I was looking for and this one checked every box. 1. Ease of use: Using this cleaner was a breeze! Using the brush roll, this cleaner puts water down as you roll forward and picks up the water as you pull backwards. Drying mode pulls up even more water. No pushing a button to put water down. I had a Hoover Max Extract that started to leak due to poorly designed tank valves (brand new replacement leaked as well). This prompted me to buy a new carpet cleaner and I have just completed my first use. I am impressed. The Shark is significantly lighter than the Hoover and cleans really well. The tanks are smaller but unless you are cleaning large areas frequently, it shouldn't be an issue. The tank valves seem very well designed and more robust than those on the Hoover. I really like that you can access the roller brush area with the Shark in the upright position. No need to turn it upside down to remove hair! This was big deal for me as a pet owner. I love this rug cleaner! It is lightweight, fairly moderate size, so easy to store in a smallish closet, and really does a good job cleaning. I used it on an area rug without padding, and it cleaned heavily used areas quite well. It doesn't have a huge reservoir, but it isn't meant to be used on huge spaces either. I like the quick dry feature also. Despite vacuuming thoroughly before cleaning my rug, there was still a substantial amount of dog hair present. The Shark did a great job anyway. I also appreciate how easy it is to clean the unit between refills. Very easily snaps apart to get rid of the hair and grime.     • Excellent Consumer-Grade Carpet Cleaning Machine

First, I regard my 4 star rating as a strong endorsement. And as a consumer-grade machine, it is very good. It still is not in the same class as a commercial machine. For that reason, I don't think it would be realistic to expect the EX201 to hold up to day-in, day-out work. But for typical home use where carpets might be cleaned once every year or so, it should give very long service. The unit is fairly heavy (18 pounds), so it is not flimsy plastic junk. It is heavier than our Shark Navigator vacuum cleaner. I just completed an initial cleaning of approximately 400 square feet of a combined living and dining room wall to wall carpet. This carpet is a short-nap "Berber" type, which is relatively easy to clean. I do not have experience using this machine with a longer nap carpet, which may be more challenging to clean. The cleaning took about 3 hours, which including an initial vacuuming and moving furniture back and forth. The unit has strong suction for removing the cleaning fluid and leaving the carpet only somewhat damp. It is useful to carefully read the instructions that recommend two back and forth passes on each area. Each forward pass dispenses cleaning fluid and each backward pass removes it. After that and initial double pass of an area, it helps to switch to suction-only mode to remove as much dampness as possible. One of the possible limitations of this machine is the dispensing and collection tanks are relatively small and require frequent emptying and re-filling. The 400 square feet took about 6 emptying and refill cycles. This is only a minor annoyance, but not difficult. Collection tank emptying is easy as is refilling of the dispenser tank and adding Shark's Deep Clean Formula to warm water. Shark also sells a separate oxygen cleaner that goes undiluted into a separate small tank and is used only for spot cleaning. The normal deep clean formula is added to the large tank for general cleaning. One of the strong aspects of this well-built machine is it more than pays for itself on first use compared to hiring a professional carpet cleaner. While the professional cleaning may be a bit deeper than the Shark, the savings with Shark are pretty significant. I estimate that the cost of the amount Deep Clean Pro Formula for the 400 square feet was approximately $15. It leaves a slight citrus scent on the carpet, which we found pleasant and not over-powering. The 12 ounces that came with unit is only enough for a small area, so anyone buying this, should purchase one or more 48 ounce bottles of concentrates. The oxygen cleaner is not needed except for spot cleaning. The Shark cleaning concentrate is fairly expensive (about 40 cents an ounce). There are many other brands of concentrate at much lower prices (as low as 10 cents an ounce). Many of those get good reviews, so I will probably try something more economical even though Shark recommends you not use any other brand. ... show more

I was looking for a carpet cleaner that would take care of spot jobs between commercial cleaning. I'm 78 and wanted something light weight. My carpet had been commercially cleaned 4 months ago. Many spots had emerged since then so I started with them. I used the hand tool and scrubbed these areas and then did the entire rug. The results were remarkable! The device was easy to use, the spots disappeared, and the carpet looks and feels like new! No crinkley feel like when the commercial guys do it. And it really, really sucks up the water. The carpet was dry in just a few hours versus maybe twelve or more when I used the commercial guys. Just go slow and let the machine and the cleaning solution do the rest. Plan to use a few minutes to clean the unit when you are done. You will be surprised at how much stuff it lifts from your carpets. I then turned to the seats and floor mats of my two cars. One front seat was a continuing problem. I had used several upholstery spray cleaners and none of them worked on the stubborn stains. This device worked the first time. The cleaning solutions really work. And they are not that expensive. ... show more
