  • Great product
Got this for a family member. Well built. Quiet. Easy to clean. Easy to set up. Can't ask for better. This is the choice.

  • Best behind the tank filter I have found
I have a 40 gallon tank and I have tried every behind the tank filter out there from the Auto Clear to the Marineland filter. My last filter was the Marineland filter and it started malfunctioning after I had had it for a few years. I could work on it and get it going, but I decided to try the SeaChem Tidal 55 filter. I love the other SeaChem products. I installed the new filter yesterday only adding the SeaChem Purigen product to what comes with the filter. I was a little nervous because allot of the reviews said the filter was noisy. So I was immediately happy when I plugged the filter in and it was super quiet. It was also powerful and gave a nice adjustable water flow. The setup was super easy and does not require I buy a new filter every time I clean the system. The sponge and filtration products can be rinsed and cleaned and reused only being replaced when they are worn out. What a bonus and money saver. The filter also has an indicator that pops up when it is time to clean and an overflow that shows when the filtration is stopped up. My old filter would overflow onto the floor and make a mess when it stopped up or didn’t work right. After 24 hours of use my tank water is the clearest it has ever been and my fish are loving it. So far, this filter is fantastic. I will do an update if things change, but right now I am so happy I bought this filter. ... show more

  • Amazing filter...and QUIET.
I've been using Fluval/ Aquaclear HOB filters and have been OK with them...but the Seachem filter does two things that Fluval cannot do. #1..there is a inlet that skims the top surface of the water to remove surface debris. #2 After a water change, and the filter body has lost prime without water, the Seachem filter pumps from the bottom openings at the body of the filter which prevents the filter from burning out during re-prime. So far...1 1/2 mos. in...great filter. Plenty of room inside filter for mechanical and chemical filtration as well as biomedia. ... show more

  • Noisy
They're good filters, but they're very noisy and if you're not on top of the water levels, it becomes very noisy. Takes up a lot of space on the back. It does definitely capture a lot of unwanted particles and keeps tank clean. The cover being able to be used to put the media basket on don't do it because unless you stand there and make sure that there's no water left in that media basket, it will spill everywhere off of the cover because the cove doesn't have like a big edge around it. ... show more

  • My favorite HOB filter
I use this on my 55 gallon aquarium and I have a 110 on my 110 gallon aquarium. Both work flawlessly. I enjoy the media basket and the versatility of using different media as needed. No disposable cartridges, which are a big rip off. Way cheaper to do it this way. I appreciate the motor being submerged in the tank, it primes and fills itself automatically, so any power outage is no concern. It has a built in surface skimmer, so that’s a nice feature. The flow is adjustable, which is nice as well. Nice convenience feature, the lid flips over and becomes a tray to catch drippings when servicing the filter is a nice touch. ... show more

  • Self Priming Perfection
I'm always searching for the latest and greatest products to fuel my many hobbies. This HOB filter for my Aquarium obsession fits that bill. The construction is sturdy and thoughtful. The large media chamber although proprietary in shape is easy to fill and remove. With little effort all media can be shaped to fit, no problem. This filter comes with a nice amount of Seachem Matrix media. I have read in other reviews that the heater holder is useless, I disagree it holds the heater at the perfect position for ease of adjustment. I use Aqueon Pro style heaters, both the 250 Watt and the 50 Watt stay firm and look great. Now to the best part of the filter, No Priming required. I had Emperor 400's in the past and priming can be tedious. Plug in and your done. The lid doubles as a carrying platform when removing the media basket, clever. The adjustable water flow is another plus. I have two Tidal 110's on my 110 Gallon tank set wide open and one tidal 55 on my Shrimp 10 Gallon set quit low. Both setups are working great. The adjustable screw for optimum angle is yet another great feature. I have hyped this product up to all that would listen, however there are a few things I relayed to Seachem And Sicce that I though could slightly improve this HOB filter. 1. Just make all the parts black - I realize they were made blue as these are user adjusted controls, they made them blue so they could be located easily. Not necessary, for those that are not trying to highlight their hardware all black would be best. 2. The surface skimmer should have the ability to be bypassed or shut off - Shrimp farmers might lose some livestock - I personally wrapped a piece of foam over the skimmer port for my peace of mind. 3. The intake tube should be able to extend further into the depths of deeper Aquariums, I have a 110 tall Aquarium setup and I liked Emperor 400's extended tube option. 4. Some may miss the bio wheel on other HOB filters, time will tell but the biofilm and good scum seem to be building pretty fast on the supplied Matrix media. So that's it, I believe this pump addresses many issue in the HOB realm and I recommend it to anyone replacing a broken / worn out filter or setting up a fresh tank. I obviously can't speak as to the long term reliability of these units as they have only been up for a couple months. ... show more
