I bought this filter thinking it might be a bit to strong for a 10 gallon hexagon aquarium. As it turns out it's absolutely perfect. I had a Marineland hang on power filter, it was just to old and I wanted a much better filter. I had canister filters before for much larger aquariums. However this canister filter is super quiet, I was shocked at the quietness. Also super easy to maintain. Water flow is super easy to control, full strength or turn it down. I have been using this company for other products and has had overall very good results with them. The flu Uva 407 is a well constructed well thought out aquarium filter for my 40 gallon plant tank. I have tied it with their UV filter to have an overall, maximum effect of filtration. The set up was easy and the results so far are good. I would buy from this company again and will continue to use their products. I would recommend this product depending on the tank and what you're growing at it. Got this to replace a previous generation of the same model that finally stopped working after about 15 years. Bottom line, the Fluval canisters are outstanding. Excellent flow rate, easy to maintain (but you SHOULD do the basic maintenance - replace the media periodically, and change the gasket seal once a year or so). Replacement parts are easy to come by for everything you can replace yourself. This generation is SUPER quiet. I keep it inside the pedestal base, which has a thin MDF door with gaps, so any significant sound will be heard, and although I could hear a soft noise from my old one, this one I cannot hear at all unless the room is totally silent and I specifically listen for it while also standing right next to the aquarium. Given how much water it's pushing, that is unbelievable. NOTE: Do not be disappointed when you first set it up if there is some noise. That is just air bubbles working their way through the system. It will happen on and off for couple hours after first turning it on. I also love all the new filter media Fluval has put out. Lots of options to dial in your setup.     • Excellent filter. Hoses not my favorite but they work.

I give the 407 itself 5 stars. I took a star off for the hoses and other items needed to move the water. Noise is practically nonexistent. Once i figured out where the motorhead gasket actually went the unit did not leak at all. Plenty of room for my preferred media. Most of the mechanical filters can be rinsed and reused. Powerful motor. Note that the lever that adjusts flow cannot be moved until the filter is operating. Not sure how they do this. Would buy again. Now to the hoses etc. Nobody likes these hoses. They are too stiff and expensive to replace. You can use 5/8 ID tubing by clamping it with an automotive screw clamp. The devices that secure the tubes to the side of the tank do work but they cannot be precisely aligned and seem flimsy. The output is great. So great that it disturbs my fish so i made my own output nozzle from a pair of intake tubes from the Fluval C series by sawing off the intake grate from one and gluing it to another. The diameter was perfect for the grey rubber adapters and now the fish are happy. The water output is now undirected. Now that I’ve figured out how to set one up I’m going to start using them on my other tanks. Be very careful installing that motorhead gasket. If the motorhead wont seat all the way down you’ve got it in the wrong groove. ... show more

Awesome filter that works great for my 20 gallon freshwater tank. Set up was very easy as per the installation guide, taking only 30 minutes top. Water filtration is beautiful and can wait to stock it.

    • Biggest pain in the neck to assemble than any other filter. Why can't this come already assembled?

Update: I bought this back in April for my $1,000 90 gallon acrylic tank (that truck broke on the way here) so we had to wait another 6 weeks for the aqauirium. I have DoJo that I dearly love but the largest was 16" long and the two younger one about 10" long. They can grow to as long as 2 feet. They look like yellow eels with yellow walrus face - some have a cute little patch of pink on their cheeks. Even they are yellow they are considered Albino due to their red eyes. Ok - I spent off and on for 2 months trying to put the Fluval 04 together (the 03 for my 50 gallon tank was fine), We'd assemble it and it would leak - since most leaks occur around the O ring they assume your o-ring isn't coated enough with vegetable oil or silicone (it was); Then we dropped the tiny ompeller (it's ceramic to keep quiet and fast and make sure you'll have to buy a new one someday). They sent us a new impeller free of charge (their customer service is fast) and some other things, none of which made the filter stop leaking. Next they sent a new O ring and new flow nossels for the hoses which I wasn't even remotely strong enough to fit on the end of the hose. We were puzzled because I sent pictures of where the leak was and it wasn't from either of these locations. At one point I got the hose half on and it proceeded to suck water from the tank and totally drenched me, my hardwood floors, my cabinet and even got to the electrical somehow - and all over the walls and miniblinds. I spend a couple of hours cleaning that mess up, I had a male friend put the hoses on the next night and he was successful; But it still leaks in the same place - no where near the hoses or the O-ring. I suspect a very thin crack in the side of the canister/ I'm now asking for a refund or if they could send us one fully assembled since I think we put in plenty of hours on assembly. That probably makes me more angry than anything. The ammonia level is rising steadily (dojoe do put out a lot of ammonia and I'm running my biggest hob on the back of the tank. Please let the send it to me assembled - for the price you pay these should be pre-assembled. The maintenance process is very different so I don't think I'd get confused, I almost wonder if somebody repackaged a bad unit (the leak is not huge but with a 90 gallon tank it's got plenty of growing room. I'll update when they make a decision - i do appreciate the very good customer service but if they keep being wrong I won't enjoy it for very long. This thing is a pain to assemble. I've found several chips of plastic that have come off in various locations but nowhere close to where it leaks. ... show more
