  • The EPA can shove it
I love filling this can with "water" because it doesn't have one of those annoying safety nozzles

  • Great product (updated Jan 2018)
Item arrived in great condition, and works are expected. I have owned other Scepter water cans for years and they hold up very well to the elements, and can withstand a lot of dropping, moving and general abuse. ---- update Jan 2018 ---- Having bought and used these containers since 2004, the above review covers my main experiences. Except ... Since mid 2017 Scepter has been shipping these Jerry Cans with new vent caps and apparently a new HDPE formula that leaves the new cans with a horrible odor that takes some time to remove. A number of reviewers have complained about the vent caps, they are like "pill bottles" in that you must push in to engage a catch to then be able to turn them. Additionally the vent caps are now designed to leak, and no longer seal the Jerry Cans, frankly a really stupid design choice probably driven by some silly CARB requirement. How to fix. Easy. Get a pair of long nose pliers, and a 1/4 chisel or a dremel tool (or similar). Remove the vent cap, inside there is a nipple of plastic which looks like it should engage the hole in the jerry can vent. In fact it is designed to prevent the vent from properly closing. Take the long nose pliers, grab the nipple at the base, grab, and twist around until the nipple breaks off. Next take a small chisel or a dremel tool or similar and flatten what residue remains, to leave a nice flat area, surrounded by a small ring that raises off the back of the vent (that is the original seal from the old design). The inner part of the vent will want to turn, so just insert a small jewelers screwdriver or some other shim, between the outer and inner parts of the vent cap to stop it turning. Also the vents of the older Jerry Cans were properly finished, the new ones are left unfinished (to presumably make them leak). All you need to do is use the chisel, or dremel, or sandpaper, or sharp knife, or a file; to smooth the flat surface of the vent. This allows the vent cap to seal against it, and only requires the removal of the roto-mold seam, not a major material removal. It took me about a minute to finish the job, the vent works perfectly now, the way it used to, except for the silly pill container push in. If you really hate that, then just pop the inner section of the vent cap, out of the outer section (with a jewelers screwdriver) and only use the inner section to seal the jerry can. -- As for the terrible odor, rinse a few times, fill with city water (for the chemicals) and let it sit for week. Drain, flush, and i found the odor was gone. ... show more

  • Sturdy container
This container for potable water is sturdy and without leaks.

  • maybe
i can't recommend this due to one major flaw: they made a feeble attempt to provide an indentation on the bottom for a handhold when tilting to pour, but it's way to shallow to be of any use. for a jug this heavy (filled with water) you'll need to hold the entire jug to empty it.

  • Somebody bring me some water
I would really like to give it four point five stars. I would only take a half a star for not being made in the USA 🇺🇸. But Canada 🇨🇦 is pretty good. I trust those Canuckians. Plus they’re so damn polite! lol Anyways, I’m not quite what you would call a “prepper”, but I do believe in having a few essential things on hand in case of emergency. And water plus food are pretty much the most important. So I have a couple of these five gallon containers of water put aside in my basement pantry. And they also double as excellent backup for my camper. This is a pretty darn good one, especially for the money. $20? C’mon man! (as our newly “elected?” President? loves to say) Great deal. It’s a nice, sturdy container. Doesn’t leak-even from the spout- and seems to be able to handle both the heat and the cold fairly well. Flexes a little bit, but still don’t leak. Pretty much all you can ask a water container to do. I’m not really a huge fan of the baby blue color but that’s just being nit picky. It’s a damn good container at a bargain price. Get a couple. Keep them full and ready for the inevitable power outage. You’ll be glad you did. Promise. I recommend. I’ll probably get a few more Thanks for reading ... show more

  • Vent cap solution and vent cap doesn't need removing to pour
As mentioned by others, by design the vent cap will not seal and a few solutions have been offered from adding a rubber gasket to modifying the vent cap. I went the potable water safe rubber gasket method, using #42 O-ring gaskets with an O.D of 11/16" and 1/8" ring diameter (3/4" O.D. can work but is a little too tight). The vent cap seals tight if you use plyers with some pressure on the top of the cap to effectively tighten and form a seal. The vent cap is designed to prevent pressure build up in the can but is not needed for pouring as the included pour spout is vented, so I see no need to ever remove the vent cap again. I purchased these for water storage in my home and I am not concerned about temperature changes or pressure building inside the cans. Also, I will use these to partly refill RV fresh water tank when boondocking instead of towing the RV to a potable water source. The pour spouts are somewhat flexible, enough to allow filling RV tank without jury rigging something else. Four stars because of having to add rubber O-rings. 5 stars otherwise for sturdiness, shape, and pouring. ... show more
