  • Great SSD Enclosure
Hardware involved: SATECHI SSD Enclosure WD_BLACK SN850X SSD (WD_BLACK) Macbook Pro M2 (Mac) Dell Precision 7770 (Dell) Both laptops have Thunderbolt 4 ports capable of 40 Gbps (Gigabit not Byte) 1. Mac - WD_BLACK - APFS Formatted: Over 3000 MBps read/write (MegaBYTE not bit). The best speeds I have seen. This is almost as fast write, but faster read than my Macintosh HD. 2. Dell - WD_BLACK - NTFS Formatted: ~2200 MBps write and ~2600MBps read. The slowest out of all pictures but still quick. Not as fast as the Mac. Unfortunately is a little slower compared to the Dell's built in SSD (WD Green SN350). Additionally I decided to compare the exFAT formatted WD_BLACK between the Mac and Dell: 3. Mac - WD_BLACK - exFAT formatted: ~2700 MBps write and ~3000 MBps read. Slightly slower write speed than the APFS Formatted version. 4. Dell - WD_BLACK - exFAT formatted: ~2400 MBps write and ~2600 MBps read. Faster than its NTFS Formatted version, but still slightly slower to the Dell's built in SSD. Transferred over 600 GB of .iso files from my Dell to this Enclosure with the WD_BLACK and got an average of 1.3 GB per second. Copied everything over in under 8 minutes. Overall this enclosure proved that it works well with professional-grade machines like the Macbook Pro and Dell Precision series, with a preference over Mac, but still does well with a Windows machine (as long as it has Thunderbolt 4). Highly recommend using this enclosure to build a portable SSD over ANY portable SSD you may find at best buy. It might be more expensive but the $$$ is worth it! Also this thing looks like it came out of a James Bond movie! Super cool! Q would be blown away at this! ... show more

  • Very Fast - internally small though
I am using this with the SAMSUNG 990 PRO w/Heatsink. Running the Black Magic speed check on the 5GB setting, I am getting about 3150 MB/s write and 3025 read. I have only been using it for a few months but really enjoying it for my Lightroom photo editing drive. However, I really had to cram the Samsung into it. The heatsink stuck up enough where it did not want to latch. I know I am risking strain and eventually breaking the enclosure by cramming it in. So be warned that you would want to get an SSD without a heatsink if you don't want to run the same risk. The enclosure does also come with some thermal padding that you can use instead of a traditional heatsink. ... show more

  • Good hardware and excellent performance... under certain conditions.
This is a really good offering by Satechi, but you have to be aware of its limitations. See below a summary of the Pros and Cons: Pros: - Good hardware. Although the enclosure's internals are not made out of aluminum, all exterior surfaces are. Thanks to the included thermal pad, the NVME board seems to be kept cool most of the time. - The thermal pad is thick enough to allow good contact with the case's metal. Also, there is no need slide the lid close it, which may make the case difficult to close. - No tools needed to open/close the case or install the NVME board. - Good transfer speeds *when using the provided connection cable*. See attached image and other comments below. Cons: - The provided thunderbolt cable is very short. If you need to use a longer one **speed goes down dramatically** (see attached picture). I tested other enclosures with the same longer cable and performance didn't change. - The NVME board is held in place by a rubber plug, which doesn't give me much confidence. Especially since that area may get quite hot. Other (cheaper) alternatives allow the board to be held by screws. - The provided acrylic lids don't serve any practical purpose. In fact, they may prevent heat from being properly dissipated. Also, mine came scratched up. - Overpriced. I'm a bit disappointed by this product. I have other Satechi devices and they are excellent. ... show more

  • Only 1 shortcoming
OK. Before I get started, let it be known that I am, in no way, associated with Amazon / Satechi / Samsung / Apple and do not get one thin dime for this review but... - I SHOULD - Sooooo...I'll post it like I'm s'posed to and give it to you hard and fast. First... THE BAD Regardless of what your better half says to keep your sorry arse from goin' off the deep end.... Size MATTERS and, at full salute, the 6 in. USB C cable sharing the box with your brand new Satechi PCI-E Gen 4 X 4, M.2 NVMe enclosure is TOO GAWDAMM SHORT... HENCE, NO 5 star SOUP 4 YOU Satechi. Aaaand... Now, for THE GOOD... Every fuggin' thing else! And to think: Additional storage and NOT super fast speed was my "why" when making this purchase but c'mon man... Why be pedestrian when you can fly first class? FLY is exactly what this baby does. Right out the box I was greeted with read / write speeds of 3250 / 3100 respectively on Samsung Magician and of 3150 / 3100 on BlackMagic. These represent the ABSOLUTE EASTEST transfer times I have ever clocked on my Mac M1 Max when strapped to ANY external storage. Even after 6 complete 75GB runs, the aluminum enclosure was barely warm to the touch. Heck! The transfer temp never rose above 44 C so, despite that 6" teeny weenie, I am impressed with this enclosure. FULL ENCLOSURE DISCLOSUER!! The rig I used consists of a 1TB SAMSUNG 990 PRO w/ Heatsink ( I had to remove in order to close the enclosure) PCIe Gen4 M.2 2280 SSD housed in the Satechi PCI-E Gen 4 X 4, M.2 NVMe enclosure and connected to a TB4 port of your basic 2022 Mac Studio M1 Max with 32 GB Unified and only 512MB internal storage via the microscopic 6 inch piece of wire I cussed about earlier. Ya gotta read. This enclosure is not designed for SSDs with heatsinks and it says so right there in the user's manual. edit 1: uploaded better photos ... show more

  • Works great as expected
On a Mac Studio M1, works great with Thunderbolt 4 and a budget pcie 4 NVME Also MacOS feels snappier than before ( I run MacOS from the external NVME) Also the case is nice, the cable is not too long, but long enough to put the drive beside or over the Mac.
