  • Do one thing extremely well
I know I need to rewire my desk but I was in a hurry. I was stuck because I don't want to upgrade to a new Mac Pro desktop mid-transition to Apple Silicon, but my stopgap upgrade of a mac Mini definitely needed a Pro graphics processor for my photography and video software, and computational tools for research and my work as a security architect. This is built to last. Solid construction, no downstream tb3 but this needs to be last on the bus as I understand it, so I have an OWC thunderbolt 3 dock and an OWC Express 4m2 NVEm pool on the other bus. It's definitely portable and will hold up in transit but mine is on my desk attached to a mac Mini 90% of the time. It works great, exceeded my expectations. Once I installed a GPU (in my case just an overpriced by $400 RX580 Pro OC) and put a Steven Universe sticker on it that was it. Ready to rock. ✌🏻 ... show more

  • Reinstall drivers if Nvidia isn't detecting it. Awesome otherwise!
So I was hoping to put my older, beefy Gigabyte 980 Ti back into commission and this external GPU enclosure did just that! I'm also running Windows 11 on an LG Gram 16Z90Q (made in 2022). Great laptop by the way! I did run into issues with the Nvidia Control Panel not detecting the card despite Device Manager and GeForce Experience detecting it without issues. After a few hours of troubleshooting, I managed to fix it by reinstalling the drivers so if you run into similar issues, try that. It works perfectly now and I was able to force one of the graphics-heavy programs like Affinity Designer 2 to use the card and not my built-in graphics on my laptop via the Nvidia Control Panel. I definitely second the review mentioning hooking up a laptop cooling pad/fan and to buy a longer thunderbolt cable. The cool thing about the card was that it was charging my laptop, which is another thing to note. The case is also quite heavy with my card in it! The instructions were clear enough for me to figure out how to get my card in there although I do wish they had allowed the side to be opened due to how difficult it is to insert your card otherwise. I docked a star solely for that reason. Sorry Akitio! Absolutely recommend this! It'll help any laptop struggling with graphics rendering and it's just so cool how far technology has come to allow laptops to be able to use external GPUs now! ... show more

  • seems good
came in fresh new packaging, construction seems sturdy so far Edit: I have now been using this for 5.5 months, with an RTX 3060ti, almost without an issue. For context, I'm using a Lenovo yoga 7i laptop, with an Intel Evo 12k processor. I've been running games like Baldurs gate 3 and horizon zero dawn on high settings. Little to no lag at all. Only issue is when I restart my computer while the device is plugged in, my laptop will attempt to use it as a boot drive, which obviously isn't going to work lol. ... show more

  • Read the measurements it's huge, it's a Titan
I was overwhelmed with this size, I was replacing a gigabyte Auros so I was taken back. To be honest I have no idea why they chose to make the chassis as large as it is, but it is built very well. Mine only had two rails, so newer cards that need 3 may need to research more. Since it's so big, I was a bit disappointed it doesn't have any IO, so you will need to put a hub on your laptop for your keyboard/mouse etcetera. TLDR: It's big, Solid, has 2 rails for power, and no extra IO ... show more

  • Technically works. Far from great.
What's good: It does what it says it does on the box. Good materials choice and external build quality. What isn't: 1: It's taller than it needs to be. Considering it supports 2 PCIe slots (not 3) it looks like it was designed for large 2-slot cards like the old 1080 Ti, not the smaller but thicker cards currently on the market. 2: It does nothing but provide a Thunderbolt GPU. This is NOT a single-cable docking solution. You will need to attach your keyboard/mouse/ethernet to your laptop separately from the Thunderbolt cable. 3: Poor thermal design, part 1: It is ventilated only on one side with an exhaust fan on the bottom. Modern cards are designed to either blow air through the card or blow it up (away from the PCIe slot on a motherboard) and rely less on downward exhaust. Exhausting only from the bottom and not from the opposite side or the top goes against the thermal design of modern cards. 4: Poor thermal design, part 2: it only has a single fan, which is on "full speed" as long as the enclosure is active. It does not go to a zero RPM mode when the GPU is generating no heat. This will cause far more dust accumulation. 5: Extremely short Thunderbolt cable. When plugged into the back of the enclosure, it reaches to around barely a few inches past the front. 6: Those "tool free" screws will absolutely need tools to remove the first time, which is okay, but the use of extra-long screws that stick WAY out above the PCIe plate was a bad idea. Because of their length, any sideways movement on them will act as a lever and bend threading. There's a reason people don't use screws that long in PC building. 7: Installation requires dropping in the GPU directly from above, and the sides do not open to allow visibility. You cannot see where the PCIe slot lines up. You basically have to fumble with it until it lines up and installs properly and hope you don't damage anything. While this does what it says it does and has good materials and build quality, I would choose other competitors over this one. The wrong compromises were made on features, interior design, and thermal design. ... show more
