  • Great Enclosure!!
This enclosure is fantastic and cool looking. The supported speed of 10Gbps allows me to hold backups or store entire game libraries on it. I absolutely love its performance. The heating up of the case is by design. The case itself is a heatsink!!! This keeps the m.2 drive running cooler and is observable in monitoring software. I had no trouble with m.2s in this enclosure getting too hot. The enclosure itself feeling warm is a GOOD thing. The negative of this drive is the RGB lighting. It is cool as heck to look at. However, plugging it in and out of my Asus supported computer causes mayhem. If it boots with it plugged in, Aura sync software on the computer sees the drive. This resets all the rgb lights in the system and I have to reset all the lighting in the computer again. It doesn't have a memory built into the drive to remember your light settings which is another nuisance. (edit: I found a way to stop the system's rgb from defaulting to red when this drive was added. It was to change the Aura config file to read only.) The other m.2 drive, TUF has just an indicator light. That one works well too exchange quick drive access and lights for durability. ... show more

  • So convenient and simple
So historically there hasn't been enough power on a serial bus to support power for an external hard drive, so they've always needed a power brick, or best case 2 USB ports to supply enough power over a USB Micro-B Super Speed cable. Now however the USB type C ports have the power, and they have the high speed data to make an external unit like this convenient on the level of a standard USB key, but with the speed and capacity of whatever m.2 drive you want to stick in there. Initially I was thinking this was just such a cool piece of hardware I wanted one for when I had an m.2 drive laying around, but then I realized I had a 6 year old Ultrabook that had finally died, and it had a 500gb m.2 in it. I immediately opened it up slotted it into the Asus Arion, and boom I had a 500gb drive smaller than my cellphone... and that I could plug into my phone to watch movies on if I wanted. With the included USB-A cable transferring from another external Type C drive I could get 25 MB/s, but with type C to type C I averaged around 135 MB/s. I'm sure that'd be faster if you were directly transferring from an internal hard drive, but overall, with 1 cable for fast data transfers and for power and the cute RGB, it's honestly the best external drive I've owned in 33 years of computing. Mine came with type C and type A cables, a SIM tool which you use to open it, and a rubber bumper case to surround it and cover that release hole. In the rubber bumper there's a slot for an included velcro attached strap with a spring loaded hook in the shape of an R. Cute, but since it's entirely flimsy plastic and the only other holding it in is velcro, well, I wouldn't rely on that for anything and I'll either be modding that or replacing it entirely with something respectable. All told though, if you have an m.2 laying around and want to use it for a sneaker net, this is an awesome piece of kit. ... show more

  • Look no further.
This is my work enclosure. I take a installation of Linux on this thing into work with me as I roam the studio to use for whatever I need. The thing is premium as it gets. Build is great lights are cool and it comes with a keychain attachment. The enclosures cooling is adequate. So much so I don't monitor temps any longer with it. The enclosure also supports many m.2 form factors. Speeds are as advertised. Very easy to use. IT JUST WORKS. Verdict: another top tier product from Asus. Would recommend. ... show more

  • Being able to swap out SSDs on the go is great
Yes, it's kinda pointlessly "GAMER" looking and we don't really need to have RGB glowing away on a drive enclosure. But it looks really cool and works just fine. I like how weighty it feels, the bumper case it came with is nice, and I appreciate that it had both the C to A cable and C to C cable. The plastic stylized "R" clip on the bumper case looks and feels super flimsy though. I only use it to hold onto the cables when traveling. It definitely should not be trusted to clip the drive to anything. I know the idea is to use a SIM Card Slot Pin to pop the enclosure open, but a paperclip works just fine too. It's really nice to get the speed of NVMe SSDs interchangeably and on the go. Plus these M.2 drives are getting cheaper as time goes on. I have one SSD I use for backing up my computer, then I can swap the M.2 out for another one I use for video editing, then swap to another I use for some file transfers. It's very easy to just stick an SSD in there, and use Disk Management (on Windows) or Disk Utility (on OS X) to initialize a new drive or wipe an old one. Modern tools like these will have recommended settings ready to go. Theoretically, one could also create a separate boot drive on an M.2 and boot off of this external drive too. So you could make a separate OS boot, stick some games on it, and then just run it on a completely different computer without much problem. It does heat up a little bit when in heavy use, I think the entire enclosure is meant to function as a sort of heat sink since it does have a thermal pad that contacts the drive. It's not so hot that I can't handle it barehanded though. Overall, I'd call it a very useful device. ... show more
