Description

Product description Tool Salival DVD/CD Box Set Original Issue The first pressings of Salival contain typographical errors Aloke Dutta and Paul D'Amour's names are misspelled as Aloke Dutto and Paul D'Mour. "Stinkfist" is listed as "Stink Fist." "Message to Harry Manback II" is spelled "Messege to Harry Manback II." The CD track ordering of "Merkaba" and "You Lied" is incorrect. After a four-year hiatus, Tool returns with the elaborately packaged Salival set, which includes a 70-minute CD of previously unreleased live and studio material, a 56-page book of photos and video stills, and a DVD collection of the group's impressive stop-motion videos. Live versions of "Part of Me," "Push It," and "Third Eye" reaffirm the band's standing as one of alternative metal's most compelling live acts; unreleased studio tracks such as "Message to Harry Manback II" and "L.A. Municipal Court" definitely sound like abandoned material, but offer a look at Tool's quirkier side. Covers of Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter" and "You Lied" -- a song by bassist Justin Chancellor's previous group Peach -- round out the disc's better-than- average selection of odds and sods. Salival's intricate, eclectic look and sound give it the feel of a "thank you" to patient Tool fans; fortunately for them -- and the band -- it was worth the wait. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi One disc of this deluxe two-disc set serves up 74 minutes (eight songs) of live material and outtakes; the other offers a DVD (in Surround 5.1) of Tool's four grotesquely artistic videos, plus the bonus clip, "Hush," from their 1992 Opiate EP. Although there's little that's new here, it's put together with as much intensity and attention to detail as the quartet's other releases. The musical high point is the driving but delicate take on "Pushit." It's also entertaining to hear singer Maynard James Keenan in a Neil Young kind of mood on "Lame." This elaborately packaged set is really just a reminder of how creative and powerful this hard rock group can be. --Janiss Garza

  • Such sweet teasing
I often tear up listening to Tool. I don't mean I curl up in the fetal position and bawl. I just mean a sudden rush of emotion suddenly takes my breath away at certain points in a given song. If you feel this way when you listen to or see Tool, then I suggest you buy this. It's oh so reasonably priced for a CD/DVD with a picture book and a really nice package. On the other hand, if you aren't affected in this way when listening, don't bother buying this because you're clogging up the review space with your whining. This isn't their new album people! This is a fan's opportunity to revisit what would have to be considered one of the absolute best live shows ever. I don't care if you have every bootleg ever made, I guarantee this sounds better. A couple extra tchotchkes in the form of covers added into the mix and some studio snippets from the Aenima sessions round it out and in the end, as always, you're drooling for more. That's Tool folks! They keep you coming in more ways then one. Overstatement? Not if you are a stolid supporter of the art that these guys spend their blood, sweat, and time creating. And as an aside to the particularly whiny reviewers, you should probably pay more attention to Maynard's lyrics as you would undoubtedly find that he's pointing his finger straight at you. He doesn't need you and he doesn't care if you leave the room. Somebody will take your place just like the 'TOOLS' that we are. Well, I for one can wait 5 years between albums because it takes that long to figure out the last one. Accept Salival as a gift and a promise of much better things to come from these guys and perhaps the closing of a door that lets into a completely new and ever-exciting world as only TOOL can paint it. I know one thing, I'm going to enjoy the trip for as long as it lasts. ... show more

  • This is personally one of my favorite Tool albums
This is personally one of my favorite Tool albums, it's so dark, so hypnotizing, so clear for a live album, the alternate versions of the songs are also amazing, like being there live to see them again.

  • Any Tool is good Tool..
I eagerly waited for my copy of Salival when I ordered and I wasn't disappointed with what I found. The boxset itself is really nice with an opaque slipcover. The artwork and presentation are well done but there are a few mistakes in the text at the back of the CD booklet. The CD itself has a few gems on it. Naturally, "No Quarter" leads the way. Tool has reshaped this song into a 11 minute epic and I think it compares very well to the original. The cover of Peach's "You Lied" is my second favorite song on the disc. A hard driving bassline and drumbeat propel the track forward. During Ozzfest in 98 Tool experimented with the song "Pushit", slowing it down and making it quieter. It's included and sounds as great as it did back then. I got the set with the VHS tape. The videos are in reverse order than what is listed in the book, but otherwise there's no complaints. Salival is a worthwhile addition to any Tool fans collection, more good music and fantastic videos. It has just enough to tide you over until [date]. ... show more

  • TOOL
This is the tip of Tool's ice berg if there is such a thing, it has long been sought after by myself and it has been the price that has held me back..but no longer, I am so happy to have it and pleased with the quality too...long live TOOL and the fans that love them.

  • Good deal
This is a great album/DVD box set. I was really impressed with how fast I receives this in the mail and with how the description of the condition was exact as what I received. I would recommend that any Tool fan should absolutely have this album in their cd collection.
