  • The best rock album I've heard in a long, long time
There's something about this album that really hit home for me. It's dark, complex, beautiful, stirring and simply stunning. I haven't heard an album this good in years and I'm a huge music fan. Don't let the fact that you may not of heard of these guys put you off. The production is superb: dense, clear, it reminds me of 70's rock but it's also very modern. There's a lot of attention to detail and embellishment without losing the core focus and strength of the 3 piece. To give you some idea I'd put it as a mix of Rush, Tool, Jane's Addiction, Pink Floyd with a bit of the palm desert scene thrown in. But have no doubt, these guys stand on their own two feet, push boundaries and explore territory that makes for a captivating listen. To me, the album flows really well and at 2 hours it never gets staid. There are so many stand out tracks and very little filler. Frankly I'm surprised and a little overwhelmed that such a great album came across my path. It takes a while to get your head around it, it took me weeks of heavy rotation before I fully appreciated it. I can't recommend it enough and if you're any kind of heavy rock music fan you should definitely pick this one up. ... show more

  • Dense and complex Journey thru (Inner) Space
I am so surprised that there is not a review yet for this brilliant work, 4 years in the making. Much effort and heart went into this and it shows. The journey is epic at over 2 hours, and since so much time went in to making it, expect it to take several listens before a full appreciation of what lies beneath can be made. Yes this a concept album, but it is pretty loose. It is basically about outside influences informing our decisions. Our protagonist is fleeing across space, from planet to planet, trying to escape the control of religion, big business, and government as far as I can tell. He finds that there is no escape because control is an "Octopus" that reaches out and asserts itself wherever we are. Could this be our upbringing influencing our decisions on all things? Maybe it is fate? Religion? Economics? Bureaucracy? All of these themes are explored, but it is pretty vague as to a conclusion. Does this diminish the journey at all? NO! As a matter of fact, that ambiguity of a conclusion is a driving force for repeated listening. That and great music. Is this a perfect double album? Well, no. There is a little filler, much landing on disc 2, but it does not detract from the experience. Is this prog-rock? Most definitely, but like fellow Englanders, Muse, the accent is on the "rock". Lots of good stuff here and it should not be missed. Certainly a best of 2010/11! If I had to describe it, I would say it is a cross between 90's Floyd, Moby, Porcupine Tree, and Muse. If you like any or all of these, then I suggest you dive in for a trip unlike many found in today's music. ... show more

  • Future classic
Had this one in original packaging so was already familiar with the music. Wanted to upgrade and got just what I wanted. Product arrived in excellent condition. Highly recommended for those of you who like fat riffage and guys who can't have TOO many effects pedals.

  • Plus he can sing like nobody's business and play hell outta the guitar
It's the songs. THE SONGS! Anybody can stretch out a jam to prog-ish infinitude but few do it with the song-writing finesse of Amplifier. Sel Balamir can sure write a compelling tune. Plus he can sing like nobody's business and play hell outta the guitar. The Octopus is more than two hours long and I usually listen to it straight through. You get a free additional 3rd CD as a download as well, containing four more awesome songs. The Octopus roars and whispers and amuses and amazes. Incredible. ... show more

  • The Octopus Pulls You In
Amplifier's double CD is very well crafted. Like any amazing and different artistry I have listened to over the years, "The Octopus", like Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, Yes, Rush and others, has to be listened to many times to be fully appreciated and enjoyed due to the depth of detailed work put into it. I'm enjoying it more & more with each listen. ... show more

  • a little "all over the place" but still a nifty bit of modern Prog Rock
The title is the review. For fans of every kind of heavy prog from 1990 onwards.

  • Don't miss release.
This is an absolutely do not miss cd. Don't expect instant gratification though, it definitely took repeated listening with this to appreciate fully. It is not derivative of other bands, but to give you an idea of the influences I say Pink Floyd, Radio-head/Muse, a dash of 70's punk ethic but rockin' all the same time. I wouldn't really call it prog, but is as interesting as many good prog bands. The concept is clever and contains the main ingredient that makes any great work of art viable, it spurs discussion of the struggles of humanity and where it originates, in this example The Octopus. It goes down in my memory of great albums that take time invested in it to get the reward. In these times of instant gratification and background music, this work stands as a testament to a great band still making album rock not just a collection of songs. Great stuff don't miss it! ... show more
