  • Cheap and get the job done.
Size: 11W-13inch Length
I'm actually using this for a sterilizer box, not an aquarium, but the actual usage and ultimate purpose is essentially the same as its intended purpose. As far as I can tell (obviously not looking directly at it) it definitely outputs plenty of light in the 254.3nm range just as it is supposed to do. The 11w version is pretty powerful (probably a lot more than I really want, but I had to get what was quickly available) and definitely produces a pretty strong smell. I can't be sure, but it might be letting a bit of the ~185nm range through and producing a bit of ozone. That is actually great for disinfecting, but if it is producing a bit of ozone it might be bad as an active disinfector on something like a fish tank (since it may produce too much in the water for the fish if so.) It may be wise to test thoroughly before using it as an external cleaner or whatever. If the fish are out of the tank and you give it a little while before putting them back in it should be just fine. As a disinfector it's probably great. I won't deny that I don't have the tools to test the exact light output, but the smell alone is a huge giveaway that it is definitely working and is powerful to be producing the effect it is on the air. In fact, I would actually suggest that anyone planning this sort of thing should get the smaller 7W version. Remember, UV-C is very harmful to the eyes and skin, so if anyone is planning to do the same thing it must be enclosed in something or even in another room. This is not a disinfecting wand (and even those should be used with extreme care) and must not be used that way. This is an all out UV-C everywhere light. I do have one nitpick that goes a bit beyond mere nitpick. The cord is very inconvenient. The part of the cord that goes from the mains to the power supply is very short with the power supply way too close to it and very inconvenient to deal with (the on/off switch is obviously on the power supply.) Then, from there, it's still actually a fairly short wire from the PSU to the lamp itself. I think that the power cord to the PSU should not only be longer but should have, in fact, been one of those standard removable cords (which would give people options to swap with a third party one of whatever length they might need.) Even if you're using this in its officially intended way this is likely to be very inconvenient I think. At least the wire from the PSU to the lamp itself is long. ... show more

  • It works!
Size: 5W-6.9inch Length
So I was vey skeptical about this method because I’ve tried a lot of others and nothing helped, but I was desperate because no matter what I did, water changes, products, the green soupy water came right back within a matter of days. The first light I received didn’t work but I was immediately shipped another and the results were great! The displayed results did NOT consist of any water changes at all during that time period and I was honestly shocked. This was a great and inexpensive product that I wish I would’ve learned about and found sooner ... show more

  • Yes it works and YES you can do it without a sump or extra equipment!
Size: 11W-13inch Length
Hoping I can help someone else out who doesn't have a sump and also has a hang over back filter! (mine is an Aqueon one, 10 gal). I went from a suddenly bright green tank with fish gasping for air to a perfectly clean one with no harm to the fish or myself. I was very worried about this light because its cheap, and this sort of light can be really dangerous if handled incorrectly. It CAN blind/kill your fish and its not good for your eyes either if exposed. Its literally the equivalent of looking right into the sun! This is why they sell enclosed ones, but if you're like me you're looking for a cheaper option because those are extremely expensive. I figured out a pretty great set up that worked well and was safe so I'll walk you through: -Firstly, replace about a quarter of the water with treated tank-ready water so that your fish have some fresh oxygen. The algae leeches out the oxygen very quickly and unlike a dangerous algaecide, this UV method takes a bit of time and patience, so you want to make sure your fish are safe and have oxygen during the short term. Try not to replace the water TOO often during this process if at all, but I still had to do it a couple times over the course of two weeks because the algae outburst I had was pretty severe and I needed to make sure my fish could "breathe". Regularly apply a stress coat/water conditioner throughout the process. I use the All-In-One water conditioner in the orange bottle. Test your water often as well. -As other reviewers mentioned (THANK YOU!) you can build a little enclosure for the lamp out of the box it came in. Simply cut a rectangle slightly smaller than the opening of your filter on the narrower side of the box, put the light back inside the box after you've removed all the packaging, and pull the cord out from the side, closing the box. -However, this can still be dangerous if you're doing it on your filter rather than a sump tank, because light can definitely still leak through to your fish due to the shape of the filter once you remove the top due to how close it is to them. What I did, literally using just scotch tape and the amazon box the package came in, was create a large cardboard flap over the side of the box, and a little extension flap that sits floating over the physical medium part of the filter. The plastic you see I added so that the cardboard doesn't get waterlogged since it's in direct contact with the water. Also from the amazon packaging -Once you've set it up, turn off your fishtank light and turn on the UV lamp. This way you'll be able to see very clearly if there's any light leaking out of your contraption. If you've done it correctly the tank should be pitch black without any light shining through, but if you peek around the side the blue UV light is still shining directly on the water inside the filter. (if you're worried about looking at it directly, you can wear sunglasses when checking on the light. I did because I'm paranoid) -Once you're sure there's no light leakage, leave it on in periods of 4-8 hrs, but make sure that you do it at a time when you can check on it regularly. A bright hot light near cardboard is not the safest idea, and while I had absolutely no problem at all with it (the cardboard didn't really heat up that much) I don't want to be responsible for someone's house burning down because they left it on during the day then went to work. -As some others have mentioned, this light is most effective if used before the filter rather than after, however, if you don't have a sump or the means to build one, you don't really have much choice. In this case, it will take longer. Some reviewers mentioned that it cleared up completely for them within 2-3 sessions- it took more like 5 or so for me, with the first couple sessions cleaning it to a safe level where I didn't have to worry the fish would die anymore, then the following sessions just for getting the water to a crystal clear level. Really, two days for safety and a week and a half for complete clarity isn't bad at all! Especially since even a water tank change did nothing for my severe outbreak. -As a tip: it really helps to keep the fish tank light off as much as you possibly can during this whole time, as the light encourages algae growth and you don't want to undo your work. This will speed things along considerably. I also took out any tank items and washed them well before (rinse THOROUGHLY!!) and didn't put them back until after I was finished with the light treatment. Also make sure to scrape any physical algae debris off surfaces in your tank as it accumulates, and change the filter before and after the treatment. That was really it! I read so many horror stories about algaecides and then about non enclosed UV lamps that I was EXTREMELY nervous, but it was so easy, building the thing took me less than 10 minutes, and it worked like a charm- my fish tank is way cleaner than it ever was even before the outbreak. I'm probably going to treat the water once a month or so for a few hours as a precautionary measure- just make sure you don't do it too often when there's not an active algae breakout because this does also kill beneficial bacteria in the tank! PS- I had this severe algae breakout in my tank because I put marimo in there. I don't personally reccommend adding marimo to a tank for this reason- save them for a smaller tank with shrimp or something like that. its not worth the amount of stress and cost I had to go through. At least get them at a reputable fish store or something if you're gonna do it so you can make sure they're healthy. ... show more

I bought this light as a last resort after dealing with an algae bloom in my tank starting in May. I had done lots of tank maintenance thinking that was the issue, and then bought algea removing chemicals to try and fix it, that didn’t work. However, within a week of having this light on in the filter 24/7 i’ve seen so much improvement! I did 1 partial water change in the week and that really sped up the process overnight. Tank is still cloudy right now, but it’s not green! Pictures show when i first put it in, before water change, and the morning after. ... show more

We had a newish 30g tank that gets a lot more light than we realized. We came back from holiday without regular maintenance and had a full algae bloom on our hands. Ordered this and an enclosed submersible uv pump for the other side to get more water flow. The combo got it almost clear in just 3.5 days. We'll continue to use for a couple of days each week to combat all the light. But we are thrilled to find a non chemical fix! Once the water started to clear up, we found out we had fry hanging out in there! This fit perfectly inside our regular hanging filter unit without any light exposure to us or our fish. We have a 10g too, and it would require some Jerry rigging to safely use on that unit. ... show more

  • To UV or not to UV
Size: 13W-13inch Length
TLDR - This is good for an emergency situation, but spend a few more dollars and get a self contained unit. I purchased this light due to an ongoing algae bloom issue in my over crowded 20g tank. Thanks to other reviews, I used the box it was sent in, cut a hole in the bottom of the box, and mounted it on top of my HOB filter. Easy peasy. But, and this is where things start to go south. The light leaks through any open holes and can cause damage to your fish, plants or even eyes. Yes, once or twice I did look at the light and it hurts big time (your results may vary, I have light sensitivity) and after a few minutes the pain subsided. Now, the DIY approach is cool but it looks ugly sitting on top of your filter, with light leaking through the bottom, and the biggest issue in my opinion is the light just isn't strong enough. It sat on my filter for a week, running 8 hours a day and it hardly made a difference, only changing the hue of the pea green soup I called me tank from green to light green. Maybe if I had left the light on another week it would have cleared things up but I didn't want to wait to find out. I instead purchased a unit where the light is encased in plastic with a small pump to cycle the water. THAT'S where I found true success. Eventually I figured out the source of bloom was excess plant tabs in the substrate that caused a constant algae bloom. Maybe this little light just didn't have enough power, or the DIY box was no good, but I would definitely not purchase this light and opt for a self contained unit (I won't name specifics, but search for "UV light pump", "green water killer", etc. It's double the price of this light but well worth it. ... show more

  • Still don't know
Size: 5W-6.9inch Length
My tank was so green we could not see through it. We had used the algea chemical stuff, and did full water change after change to no avail. Finally someone recommended 1 of these lights I figured why not. When the light came it was not as bright as I figured it would be. But I put the light in the filter and after a few days it did look less green, I added the algea chemical stuff after a few days and my tank has been crystal clear every since. I've never in my 25 years of having tanks ever had 1 this crystal clear. This is a 95gal tank and I only used 1 light. It's been a month. Today I checked the filters to replace them and to my suprise it's pretty clean inside the filter where the light is and the cartridge is not all gunked up like the ones without the light. Was it the light I cant say for sure, it sure seems that way though. I give it 5 stars. ... show more

Our tank was really bad, we are first time fish owners and having this little tank has been the only issue. We have done everything that we are told and it will only stay clear if we are lucky two weeks and bam cloudy and then green. This time it was really bad and I looked up what it was and the number one thing was to buy this light. So we did and after I would say about two weeks of steady use our water is almost clear. Now it's just super cloudy but not green any more. We are going to change the water and the filter and just start fresh. ... show more

I have a 20 gallon planted tank with a couple danios, tetras and a dwarf pleco. The fish have always been a joy and I love seeing the plants grow over time, however I have ALWAYS had an issue with green algae/green water. I have tried almost everything to the point I was doing full water changes so the water would be clear for about 2 weeks just to empty it all again. Then I did some more research and found this light. I have an enclosed sump system in the back so my fish do not come into direct contact with the light, but the pictures are from Wednesday adding the light, to Friday two days later, and then Thursday the next week. In one week the water has completely changed. I can finally see the back of my tank and my fish can navigate their home. Very pleased with this light. Make sure you get the right size for your tank (I needed the smaller one) and place it where your fish can’t directly see it, and be alittle patient because day 1 looked like nothing happened. So worth it and a great purchase because green water sucks ... show more
