That sounds weird, but I feel like it could fold if you set something down too hard.     We purchased this for our daughter's loftbed when she moved to college. It helps to keep her nightly stuff in place and easy to reach without having to get out of the bed. It's a sturdy plastic, but actually looks a little smaller than how it is pictured. Overall, it works well and she likes it.
