I've been baking for a while, and have never given a metal rolling pin a thought. I usually use my french rolling pin for whatever dough i happen to need it for, or my old standard wood rolling pin with handles. I saw this deal one day for the rolling pin and the pastry mat and decided to give it a try. Now that i have it, and used it several times for pie and cookie dough, i'll never use my others again. Everything i roll with this rolling pin comes out perfect. The thickness rings make rolling out dough a breeze, especially when you need the thickness of the dough to be consistent throughout. This is something i could achieve with a lot of work with my old rolling pin, and near to impossible with the french pin. I've made several batches of chocolate covered butter cookies (i can't ever make enough of them. either family members take them on sight, or when friends stop by they steal them and take them home). Everybody has told me how they are even better than before for some reason. I know the reason is the dough is a perfect thickness before i bake them, so they bake evenly. And getting them to a perfect thickness couldn't be easier. Also, the pastry mat that came with the pin is a real plus. I've seen them on Amazon before, but never really thought they were necessary. Now that I've used it, I see why bakers like them so much. With a little flour, nothing sticks. When you lay the mat on the countertop, it virtually sticks to it, never budging an inch. And clean up is easy. Everything wipes right off. When done, i simply roll it up and stash it away till next time. For $20 bucks and change, this was definitely a bargain. ... show more

Husband thinks I'm just getting better at making pie crusts with age. Nope, I'm still awful... The fact that this set makes me look like a superstar just makes me love it even more. (Now if it could only bring me some skill to finish those frilly pastry edges....) My new set replaced a cracked, rigid plastic rollout mat that would shift & slide all over the counter when I tried to roll out dough on it. (I could not wait to throw that thing away!) This one is pliable enough to loosely roll into a tube. It has a slightly "grippy" back surface texture to prevent skidding, but not so much that it's tough to clean. This pastry mat is well marked for measuring surface area, and it's smooth to make kneading dough a much easier task. Additionally, very little dough is required when working it on this mat's surface (so perhaps this means my pie crusts *are* actually improving...?). Additionally, this set includes a stainless steel rolling pin with screw-on ends. Its surface well marked with measurements, the pin also comes with discs that are held in place by the ends. These ensure you'll reach whatever dough thickness you want to achieve. The disc sizes are 3/8", 1/2", 1/4", and 1/8" (for those outside US, that's 10mm, 6mm, 4mm & 2mm). This is a wonderful addition to your kitchen gear, and would make a lovely gift as well for a newlywed or to a young person's first apartment set-up. ... show more

I love stainless steel and this rolling pin seems to be high quality. The rings make it easy to roll out crust or cookies evenly at the desired thickness you chose by changing the rings.
