  • great kit, but expensive.
out of the box this is a great kit, all the pads trigger very well, and the sounds aren't too terrible. you will need your own throne, kick pedal, and hi hat stand in order to use it. Any brand will work, and it fits a double kick no problem. the kick is amazing. because you're moving air in and out of the drum it feels just like an acoustic kick. i knew when this kit came out that i was going to get one and pair it with a td-27 module and the digital pads. so far i have gotten the snare and the ride(not pictured) and its great paired with superior drummer 3. i personally was on the fence between this set and the td-27kv but opted for this one because of the trigger layout in the pads vs the layout in the pads that come with the td-27kv. i didnt want the hot-spotting that came with the pdx-100 pads. its a very fun kit to play and its got that roland quality so im sure it will last years to come. ... show more

  • Great drum set!
I love this drum set! It is a big step up from my original Roland drum set from 10 years ago. I love that this one looks more like an acoustic set. I especially love the bass drum, and that fact that all of the drums have mesh. The high hat using a regular pedal and moving more like a regular high hat works much better than my old high hat. I also like the module much better than my old one. This set has a great look, and is very sturdy. I love the sound and it is really fun to play! Well worth the money. It should last me for a long time! ... show more

  • Great Alternative to Acoustic
This is my first take into electronic drums - and I have to say it will be hard to go back to acoustic sets. Been playing on this kit for a little over a year now so I’ve had time to know the gear. Hi-hat was the big selling point. It’s good. I play a lot of funk, classic rock, and blues so tight control over the hats was critical. Other reviews complain about hi-hats not being responsive… I thought the same thing at first but you HAVE TO CALIBRATE the hi-hats to set the tigger level. Change stands or move the kit and you’ll have to recalibrate again. Takes less then a minute but makes all the difference. Without calibrating your hats will sound inconsistent and you’re gunna have a bad time. After calibration they feel and act 85% of metal hats - give it a few practice sessions to learn how the hats play best (they are a little different) and you’ll be able to do *almost* everything you could before (this is not an acoustic kit so don’t expect it do do everything *exactly* the same - but also realize you can do new things that were never an option before). Mesh drum heads are responsive and feel great. A little closer in response to a practice pad then a normal drum head. 0 complains. Can tune heads with normal drum key to five different response (does not change pitch - that is done on the controller). There are 2 things that I wish were better: 1) is the stick response from the ride. As the cymbal a thick slab of rubber you get a bounce from striking the symbol rather then the lower feedback response from metal (this issue effects all cymbals of course not just the ride - but I notice the effect on the ride more). Thinner and denser rubber cymbals would have helped this. 2) The kick drum is light and will walk if you play with any authority down low. I put it on some non-slip pads (like what you use under a small rug on hardwood) and that fixed it. But one more thing to make sure I lug around. The drum controller is clean and just spend 20min reading the manual to learn all the buttons. You can set levels, put virtual tape on drums to dampen sound, swap cymbals on the fly, and retune drums all within a few buttons. It’s awesome. The drum kits loaded on the controller and good. Lots of useless ones (to me at least) but I’ve found about 6-8 that are my go-to kits. Cannot explain how nice it is to turn a dial and go from a funk kit to a 60’s rock kit based on the song. Your guitarist is constantly changing guitars out to get that “right” sound and now you can too. There are some “instructor” tools loaded on the controller and they feel a little gimmicky… but some are nice for keeping up with rudiments. Favorite one tells you how close your strikes are to the tempo and gives a percentage score. So I’ll set it to 110bpm and do 5-stroke rolls for 2-3min and see how tight my timing is. I’ve gotten better from this and I can hear it in fills. Can also record on the fly (if you don’t have a SD card can still record just can’t save). A great tool for playing a song then listening back to see how you actually played it. This too has made me better. Headphone out is clean for home use (my goodness it’s amazing to play whenever you want and NOT wake up the house). Pre-ours can go directly into any PA system but they WILL be quieter compared to outputs from a mixer. For practices I have some small speakers I plug right into but for anything that requires clean loud volume go drums -> mixer -> PA. Other have complained about cable management. It’s not great but get yourself some Velcro zip ties and a snake wire runs and it will be fine. A dark drum mat to place the kit on also helps hide the wires into the background. This is a new instrument- please do not expect it to operate exactly like an acoustic kit. Just like an electric guitar must be played differently then an acoustic guitar or a keyboard must be played differently then a piano. The electronic version is similar but not a perfect one-to-one so take the time to relearn your craft to get the most out of this e-kit. Overall - love the hats, mesh heads are good, good practice tools, easy to change sounds on the fly, wish the cymbals were thinner/denser, and wish the kick drum wouldn’t walk. Is it perfect? No. Would I buy it again? Hell yes! ... show more

  • Every thing came together, minus hi hat, pedal, and throne.
Assembly was easy, but it’s not my first kit. Great basic set. The hardware has heavy Crome plating and sturdy. Just received a few days ago and couldn’t be happier. Love it!

  • Love this set!!!
Only things I dislike about this set is the snare has no side stick affect and the high hat doesn’t have the bell effect. Roland came out with products with all of that yet you can add them to your set. Other than that, I love it👍🏿 Ooo, it’s best to buy the amplifier made specifically for Roland’s VAD sets. I tried it with my keyboard amplifier and really couldn’t get that realistic sound I wanted. But the Roland amplifier does to trick!!! ... show more

  • Took a chance.
I've had a variety of E-Drum kits over the years, Simmons (yes, I'm that old) DDrum, back when they were a major E-Drum player and Alesis. Unfortunately, where I live there are no instrument retailers that stock anything that comes close to pro equipment so I had to go buy reviews, articles etc. The kit looks good and plays very nicely but the sounds in the module are completely uninspiring. Fortunately Drum-Tec have a selection of downloadable kits that really bring the set to life. That said...most of the time I use my E-Drums to trigger VST's for recording. The Hi-Hat is just short of terrible. Very inconsistent triggering, sounds good when it works but hard to play with any degree of nuance. The biggest dud is the cable snake. When I read reviews of it I thought, "how bad could it be?"...it's bad. Very messy, very hard to do any kind of cable management with. I plan to cut the cables coming from the D-Sub plug at about 12" and put female TRS jacks on them then use individual TRS cables from there to the pads, just to clean up the appearance. So bottom line, the VAD306 is good, just not great. The drums are excellent, great feel and great response, the cymbals are surprisingly good, other than the Hi-Hat. If it wasn't so expense to ship back I'd honestly return it and probably go with the VAD 506 with the TD27 module. ... show more
