Recommended for the initial turning of uneven or square stock to round. The shape of the roughing-out gouge enables the tool to cut safely with the wings (the name given to the tips of the side walls) well back from the workpiece. This a nice larger gouge. For it's size, the handle should be longer so there is better balance. It was a good price, and the length was clearly stated in the description. I may try to extend the handle myself.
