These are pretty lightweight, yet feel strong enough to hold up to the elements. The plastic itself feels good in the hand and it’s easy to get a good grip on it. No sharp edges. Since it’s constructed entirely of plastic, no electricity will go through. The hook at the end is tight enough that the wire won’t easily slip away from you. However, I’m not sure how exactly this handle works without a spring. The ones I’m used to all have a spring to help keep the wire tight. ... show more

Wrapping poly tape back on the spool can be a tedious task. This reel does make it fast and easy, but best for those who only have short runs. It holds the equivalent of one spool (whether 1.5", 1", 3/4" or 1/2"), but for those like us that run miles of tape, that can add up to a dozen spools or more. The construction was solid and the 3:1 gear ratio gets the job done quickly, but it comes at a hefty price of more than the poly tape itself. It would be nice if this reel had a feature to remove the wound up tape, but this does not, so it is best for those who need to constantly move short runs. ... show more

They are probably ok for some one that has alot of patience and time but for some one that put up, pulls down fence multiple times a day choose to pay more for a good reel

Nice reel bo complaints it does its jobs. Seems sturdy and it reels in just fine. Has a lock on the side to secure it from unwinding. I saw another one thats geared this one is just going to take alot of turning compared to a geared one. Great quality overall nice built.

    • Makes Electric Fencing for My Garden So Very Much Easier!

I've got a modest home veggie garden that I need to protect from the local deer population. Since I need to rototill the garden each year, any fencing to keep the deer out would need to be taken down and re-installed each spring, making conventional fencing a difficult and expensive option. Electric fencing is a much simpler option for keeping the deer out, and is much easier to take down and re-install than a conventional fence. However... even with a modest-sized garden, putting up polywire around it is still a significant chore, using five strands and totaling about 800 ft. It's not bad for initial installation, since you are pulling off a pre-wound spool, but winding that much wire back onto a spool is a tedious chore to do by hand. This fencing reel solves the problems nicely. It has a 3:1 gear ratio, so it's easy and fast to wind the polywire, and because the spool has high sidewalls, you don't need to worry about it slipping off the end of the spool and creating a birdsnest of tangled line. While this reel isn't likely to save me any time when re-installing the polywire this spring, it definitely was a timesaver for taking it down. Bottom line: If you have any significant amount of polywire fencing to regularly take down and put back up, a fencing reel like this is a definitel must-have item. ... show more
