  • Just get Lords of Waterdeep instead. It’s MUCH better.
Style: Game
Granted, this is a good game in the sense that it’s easy to learn and teach and is about as simple a euro-style, worker placement game as you’re going to get... ...and admittedly it’s fun... BUT! It suffers from some major issues. I’m going to have to compare this to Lords of Waterdeep which, as of this writing, is actually $33 and this is $35. Even if LoWD was selling for $40 or $45 I’d say go with that LONG before you get this (unless this is going for $25 or so). So, you’ve watched videos on YouTube on how to play and read other reviews here that explain it. But how is it, really? The experience that is. Pros - as stated previously, it’s VERY easy to learn and teach. It almost a “filler” kind of game to me but with the length of the game sort of over shooting that mark. But yeah, it’s that simple. It’s a beautiful game, great artwork and production quality (the coins are metal!). While simple, it does have some strategy to it. Cons - it felt like it was missing two things to me, choice and combat. The village choices didn’t seem “chunky” enough and the selection is limited. LoWD KILLS this game in that respect allowing players to add more options to the board during play. Also, when it came to “raiding” I felt I was doing it wrong the first time because it was so anticlimactic. Have the Viking and the provisions required? Done. You “raided”. Collect your loot. It felt like there should have been SOMEthing to denote a battle of some kind. Sure your Vikings have strength values, sure your roll upnto two red dice...but these are just to determine how many victory points you’re going to get for the raid. Vikings have strength but don’t use it in actual battle?? Hmmm. This one really is a no brainer - MUCH better worker placement games out there and for the same price! This one has its little elements (place a worker, remove a worker) but it’s boring compared to a game like Lords of Waterdeep. UPDATE! So, we’ve pulled this game out now a few times since my original review and I’ve upgraded it to 3 stars instead of 2. Since my original post, many expansions have become available for this base game that have done an effective job of making it “better”. However, you’ll need to invest in those expansions to get there, obviously. It’s also a legitimate turnoff for many people who don’t want to have to buy expansions to make an “ok” game better. They want something good -great right out of the box! I don’t blame them! Plenty of those games out there. But, I did want to say the game has grown over time and coincidentally, with the numerous expansions to choose from, you can grow with it. In essence, you can scale the game to your liking by adding an expansion to it. ... show more

  • One of my favorite worker-placement strategy games.
Style: Game
Very good, I'm a huge fan of Viking themes and even bought 2 expansions along with it.

  • Great introduction to Worker Placement games
Style: Game
Quick and easy to learn game that uses a popular mechanic in modern board games, worker placement. The basic concept is that each player has workers that on their turn they will place on the board in available locations that then either let the player perform some sort of action or gain some sort of reward. Raiders does this in a very simple and slightly different way than most other games. Each player only has ONE worker. On your turn you will choose to either Work by placing your worker on a valid, available space and performing the action or collecting the appropriate resources and then selecting a different worker on the board and performing the actions or collections for that space or Raid, if you have the proper resources, by placing your worker on one of the available raid spots on the board and carrying out the raid action there and gaining the associated worker, victory points and plunder. The easy thing to remember is that you will always start and end your turn with one worker. There are a few more nuances to the game than that, but this is a really quick game to learn and teach and loads of fun with lots of take that moments in attempts to foil your opponents. ... show more

  • A fun romp in the Age of Vikings
Style: Game
Great strategic worker placement game, turns go pretty fast and for us the game takes around an hour to play. Love the natural progression built into the game - you’ll be able to see your raiding targets from the outset, but you’ll have to spend turns upgrading your Viking’s equipment, hiring stronger crew, and building up a warchest of resources if you want to be able to take home the plunder. The game is competitive and there’s a small element of “take that!” in some of the cards but generally your interactions with your opponents will be more subtle, depriving them of key resources and actions rather than outright war as you race to see who will be the strongest, most glorious, and most favored by the chieftain. ... show more

  • Too repetitive for an hour
Style: Game
With 2 players, it took 90 minutes; at 70 minutes, I wanted it to be over. Only played one game and it was a massive blowout, I think I lapped her. Big map taking up space and many pieces to make a lengthy set up and take down time. For the first time, I prefer the app.

  • Thematic Viking Game
Style: Game
We received this game less than a week ago, and my tweens and I have played several times already. It is thematic in the sense that you're a captain/leader of a Viking ship, who must recruit a crew, lead it on raids and manage its resources. Not all of your crew will make it back home -- some will die in battle and earn their way to Valhalla. The board isn't cluttered, and the artwork reminds you to have some fun. The game also gets kudos for having an appropriately sized box. So much game in a medium sized box. The game moves quickly. If you've enjoy a smattering of worker placement/action selection, engine building and resource management, this may be a good game for you. ... show more

  • 100% satisfied
Style: Game
I bought this game for my son’s 16th birthday. I thought he would be interested, because he is a big fan of Vikings on History channel. We are big board game players, and this game became one of our faves after one play. The directions were easy to figure out and set up was fast and clearly illustrated. If your crew is a fan of catan you will enjoy this game! I bought this game based on another customer review, and he was spot on. Family friendly & fast paced. I love that the coins are made of real metal and other pieces are wood. My only complaint is that the “worker” pawns in Black and Gray are too close in color. This was a prime purchase delivered in one day! I also love the photo delivery option. I would definitely order from this vendor again. ... show more
