I had a hammer but I used their mallet so it did not damage the paint. For the size it is very sturdy. I would not put a engine on it but I was looking for shelf that was smooth and could hold boxes. PERFECT! I also got a nice email telling me when the product would be there from them. I would buy this again if I needed one just like it. Please do not buy this product if you want to place anything close to 500 lbs per shelf. It is also incredibly difficult to build. You have to hammer in every piece and the metal bends very easily. I planned on putting a 400lb aquarium on it and there is no way this shelf would withstand that. The metal bent as I was installing it. It’s a ridiculous product, please save your time and money. Buy a heavy duty shelf from Home Depot. Save yourself the headache ... show more

Shelves are sturdy enough and look very nice. Easy to assemble. I’m not confident shelves will hold 500 lbs as shelf metal is thinner.
