The story got off to a slow start but roared to a finish. The characters are well thought out any very relatable. I can’t wait to see what’s ahead in book 2. Thank you to the author for taking the time.

The premise and opening held promise, then reality set in. The "red sky" as a toxic cloud that only a few who did not venture outside during the event would be survivors is plausible. It would not be infecting people, it would be toxic, and the vomiting could be attributable, but as a carried over continual sky, it would remain deadly. But here? The characters got sick and recovered, then were able to go outside in spite of the fact the red sky remained. Outside of the sheer volume of the material to create a red sky, and that it would clog up lungs, we were presented an infection scenario, and even if it was nothing but dust, that volume and density would have required air filtration both indoors and out. That was where I began to wonder what was going on. The characters-- both our core and the anti-hero-idiot faction-- all of them seemed to be totally clueless. Were only the not too bright able to survive the infection? It kept going downhill-- how the brother made it in to "rescue" his sister needed an explanation, but was presented as a walk in the park. If a major deadly event occurred, there would be a lot of clueless people running around, and I thought this was going to be following the clueless, but it wound up being an epic tale of exploring how clueless a group of people could be in the face of an apocalypse. The level of knowledge and access to weaponry was not in sync with the US in 2020-2021 or it could have been an attempt to base a story on the clueless and hopelessly inept. In spite of that set of issues with the mode of the event and the strange set of survivors-- and note, the subgroups were very, very small-- this managed to more or less carry off the story of an impossible event with the end of the world sandwiched with cluelessness to be interesting, and it was deliberately held back to fit an early teen and subteen audience. That handling gets a thumbs up, but the framework of the story gets a thumbs down. I gave it a four out of five because-- plus factors-- it fit an audience targeted by age and maturity, there was no super this-that-or-the-other showing up to take charge, the "what really happened" is kept on the back burner, and that cooperation and working toward a goal was the core and basis for the story. It lost a star for simply not making sense, which a lot of real disasters do not make sense, but this one went too far in not making sense. This was a world without bows and arrows, baseball or softball bats, golf clubs, or even some broken 2x4 chunks to use as improvised weapons? I am hoping this was the slow setup to the survival of the clueless, and that they finally find a community with a good supply of clues. And yes, I ignored the materials in hardware and building stores, and I accepted that it was more than just an EMP-- BUT if so over eighty percent of the cars on the road today would survive an EMP. ... show more

    • Don't waste your time
I only gave this 3 stars because there weren't too many typos. This story draaaaaags soooo muuuch. 67% of the book is them deciding to do the same thing & talking it to death. The author, very clearly, has no idea how to survive an apocalypse, and while I'm sure most people don't, this group is dumb beyond words. ***Spoilers*** Gwen, the supposed heroine is so wishy-washy & indecisive that she strikes me more like a 13 yr old girl than a 25 yr old woman. Should she, or shouldn't she with Jamie? *Eye roll* You're freaking 25! I was waiting to see if they'd pass notes, like in middle school. Her interactions with Blair, Jamie's ex-girlfriend are so Mean Girls I had to laugh. Gwen's brother, Nick, is an ex-cop & drug addict who thinks he should tell everyone what to do. He's extremely unstable but Gwen won't rat him out to the group. What?! Newsflash, that makes Gwen an inconsiderate bitch who allows others to depend on a guy who is anything but dependable. Jamie, a love interest, acts like a 12 yr old boy who has never kissed a girl, let alone dated one. He takes forever to step up & help the group do anything. Blair & Maggie do nothing at all. Blair's too busy being mean, & Maggie just sleeps all the time. The only character I, kind of, liked was Bronx. He was the first to step up & gather survivors & supplies together. Don't waste your time. I'm not buying the other books in the series. ... show more

The characters were good. Enjoyed the storyline of this book. Can’t wait to see where the story goes from here. Looking forward to the rest of the series. The names of each book are interesting.

    • nice plot, but seriously needs an editor before its released!
I like the plot lines - although it seems to repeat across her series. I am really frustrated by her lack of editorial review - her grammar, word selection, and lack of understanding of punctuation is usually frustrating, but sometimes really inhibits the understanding of where the storyline is going. wish author would slow down and get an editor to polish books before going to print. but this seems to be typical of e-books in the last few years. rushed. even when the story is good, they are lacking that final review to ensure readability. just my 2 cents. ... show more

Was this even proofread? There's no continuity. She wakes up, throws up, worries about the sky, and then starts to jump into a quasi "every man for himself" deal. No electricity, but she takes a shower, not even concerned about a possible lack of water. Has no one even seen a survival movie? Even Mad Max would have known better than these guys. ... show more

I really enjoyed reading this book, I read it in one sitting. Well written and It was a fast moving story. I want to know about Grandma...Will there be more to this story?
