  • Nice radio, could use some improvement as one might expect.
I am not new to 'CCR's, I've had several over the years but I've been watching this one since it came out for the "price is right" opportunity to buy and that just came. I also have a DB25-D, which is similar but this radio is much more feature packed. The big draw to me was the "single frequency repeater" feature. I'd been hearing about this ability for years... listening to DMR on one time slot and the radio repeats it on the other time slot. This, in theory, would allow a good repeater system without the need of an expensive duplexer, and allows the radio to continue to be used on any frequency or band (whereas a repeater system is typically fixed to one frequency split. I like the radio, so far, quite a bit. It has a nice clear display, the buttons are plastic (as opposed to soft/rubbery buttons) which give a much better tactile feel. The dual VFO and two separate volume knobs are great as well... this will receive two signals simultaneously and route the audio to the single top-mounted speaker. The DMR performance is good, received stations sound clear. Analog, on the other hand sounds a bit tinny. The lowest volume setting is also too loud for my rather quiet home. Some attenuation was added to help. I have not been able to test many of the other features in the radio like bluetooth and GPS/APRS, that will come in due time. I haves tested out the cross band repeat, cross mode repeat, and single frequency repeat. The first two were pretty easy to figure out, plus YouTube helped as well. But the DMR Single Frequency Repeat wasn't addressed in the manual (as far as config) and the internet wasn't much help- but did help me realize that the DB40-D is very similar to the Kydera CDR700, an Anytone model, and possibly others. I did get it to work, but it isn't implemented like I thought it would be, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. It would appear to listen to a signal on either time slot and rebroadcast it on the other. Receiving radios (maybe it's just the ones I have) no matter what time slot they're set to for receive pick up the local and rebroadcast signal... which makes up the "mesh network" spoken of in the advertisement. It seems to work, but could certainly use refinement. Sometimes the receiver picks up the transmitter because it got out of sync and the radio essentially locks up until it is powered off. Sometimes the retransmission is garbled up. It is not super consistent... hopefully a firmware update will fix this. Scan is slow but works ok.. general performance as a transceiver is good enough for me and what I'll be using it for, so it's a keeper. ... show more

  • Sorry, Radioddity. I wanted you to be the little radio company that could.
I had earlier purchased the Radioddity DB25D analog and digital DMR mobile radio. I returned it because of the sloppy firmware and its habit of locking up when it got slightly warm when I engaged in a lengthy conversation. One would expect the fan to prevent the radio from locking up. And it's not like I beat on the radio. So I bought the Radioddity DB40D. I was pleasantly surprised with its functioning. It had no obvious firmware issues. But after putting this radio through its paces, it, too, has shown its limitations. I have operated this radio on several local repeaters, both analog and digital, and my conversation partners report that they lose me, mid-transmission. This is not operator error or problems with the rock-solid repeaters or with my -70 dbm RSSI. The radio simply stops transmitting (either carrier or audio) whenever it feels like it. A radio that stops transmitting whenever it feels like it is not a radio. So it too is going back to Amazon. I will buy an Anytone 578, which is what I should have done to begin with. Radioddity should change their name to Radio No Workee. Sorry, guys. It's the truth. If you want a radio that looks pretty and allows you to listen to analog and digital transmissions, then this radio is for you. But if you want to, you know, um, actually talk for more than ten seconds without the radio sitting down in a huff and secretly refusing to transmit, then choose another radio. ... show more

  • Radi ODDITY is the right name for this junk
Terrible audio and programming this radio is akin to a plate of spaghetti.

  • Radioddity DB40-D
This is a nice Ham Radio. The CPS programming software could be a little better, but overall it is programable. I had an issue with the hand mic when transmitting it would cut off at times. Contacted tech support with the issues, and they sent me a new hand mic at no cost. The radio works great again. My next purchase will be the Radioddity GD-88 DMR Radio Handheld. ... show more
