I am currently setting up this NAS with the help of a youtube video that shows you how to set this very QNAP ts-230 up for the first time. The video is uploaded by NASCompares and has been very helpful for this is my first NAS. I have installed at this time only 1 Seagate 4tb Ironwolf Nas Drive, but will be installing another soon for a raid 1 setup. I must admit I didn't research if that is possible after only installing 1 drive first, but we shall see. Reason for purchase. I bought this Nas to keep files in one location since i have more than one computer and a cell phone i want to backup my pictures from. Also I dont want or need anything more than a two drive Nas. Why this model? It came down to two models for me. Either the Synology ds220j or this Qnap ts-230. They both have the same CPU, However this model has 2gb of ddr4 ram where as the ds220j only has 512mb of ddr4 ram. I cant believe the ds220j only has 512mb of ram. Also you can NOT upgrade the ram in either unit so this was the real deciding point for me. I have never owned a computer or anything where having more ram wasn't a good thing and make for a better and faster experience. Price was of course a deciding factor too. at the time of purchase they both were within 10 bucks of each other so again getting the one with a lot more ram just made it easier to choose the ts-230. I have just got everything installed and will start using it today 8/4/2020. I will keep you posted on how it goes in two weeks. Should be fun and help making backups easier since the files will be in one place. Be back in two weeks with more to add. Take care. Update August 15th 2020. Well of course as soon as I get this up and running my internet service goes down. It's been down for 5 days.     • Exceeds expectations, especially for an entry level NAS

First, the hardware of QNAP models is often a lot better for the price than Synology, but Synology has the edge on software. For a low-end NAS, having 2 GB of RAM is pretty good, although it isn't expandable. UI-wise, it is nowhere as easy as a Synology NAS to set up. However, once it is set up, it gives some very useful features, like the ability to mount cloud services (Dropbox, GDrive) as file shares, so for Linux boxes that it is difficult to find a reliable client, this can help greatly. It also provides a decent backup program offsite, good volume encryption (using LUKS, the Linux standard), and very importantly, two factor authentication. I have found newer versions of cloud syncing software "nosy", wanting to sync or back up anything you do, and add disk/CPU overhead. By having your cloud drive stuff all handled as a simple file share, it saves a lot of overhead. I definitely plan to buy a couple of these. This one will be eventually relegated to a backup server, and I'll be buying a larger one for file serving and handling some lightweight virtualization. The HybridMount and file cloud gateway functionality is a must have. I have been using it to move terabytes of data offsite, and after the data is copied to the caching drive, the NAS does the rest and syncs it up, with optional compression and encryption. The beauty of this is that not the entire cloud storage has to be synced, so only a relatively small cache is needed for most things. My only three gripes: 1: The UI is very busy. For someone used to Synology devices where you just configure the filesystem and then add shares, you need to consider how to do partitioning and keeping some free space aside for snapshots. Synology uses btrfs's snapshot capability, while this NAS uses Linux's LVM2, the LVM2 being a lot more stable, but on a block level. It isn't as easy as Synology where on that platform, you can just configure and forget, then add/encrypt/modify shares as needed. 2: The included firewall, and the optional QuFirewall is limited. For example, I want to allow a subnet to access file shares, but I only want 2-3 machines to access the Web management interface. I either give full access to the box, or no access... no inbetween, as it will not allow blocking the Web interface. I wish this could be addressed somehow, because the Web portal is a large source for attacks, so I want to only limit it to management machines. 3: I wish it could use something like btrfs on top, so one can have transparent file compression. This helps greatly with some applications which store a lot of redundant data. However, their higher end models use QTS Hero or other variants that have built in ZFS which handle this. ... show more

TS-230 is a great budget solution because RTS1296 CPU with 2GB RAM is shown in Synology DS218, which costs 71$ more. It looks great with light blue (Hatsune Miku) colored state-of-art design and icon-shaped LEDs. (Other NASes have rectangular LEDs with icons printed.) The trays can hold the hard drives tightly by screws and snap-guides. It works great for backup and media sharing (as a network drive) for PCs. Hybrid Backup Sync and Qsync Central are well-made software that always work flawlessly. It showed no significant lag even when I played a video while 3 backups running. I think that it is a good-fit for home use. USB copy button is also very useful. However, multimedia apps are not satisfactory. Plex media server works with 1080p videos in limited file formats, but you will not need it if you have a decent PC with Potplayer. Ai based QuMagie is little more than a joke because it doesn't understand one person cannot be shown twice in a single photo. It was really annoying when I put my son's class graduation photo. It asked me endlessly if each random kid is my son. In addition, the enclosure is not noise-proof. It echoes the hard drive noise. ... show more

I set it up so android, apple, linux, and Windows 10 can recongize the files on this NAS. Windows 10 shows my folders that are on the NAS and I can do everything I can do as if the files were on my PC machine. So I can move, delete, copy, stuff back between PC and NAS. Also I can open up Movie folder on the NAS and watch my movies using VLC. No studder for me. What is nice for me is that all my PC's can see the NAS folders. Before I got the NAS, I would have to take External Hard drive and plug it into PC I was using. Now I store my External Hard drives in closet (as backup), and use the NAS loaded with 2 8TB WD Reds to share my files on all my devices at home. ... show more
