  • An Excellent Fully Automatic Turntable
From my review in Outword... The sound quality, is simply amazing. During COVID I bought ELO’s “Out of the Blue” with the album artwork on the disc themselves. I thought it made for a poor pressing when I played it on my old Techniques turntable, but the Automat showed just how glorious it was regardless of the image discs. The Ortofon really pulls out the subtleties, air and space that is so cleverly imbedded in those grooves. Andreas Vollenweider’s “Down to the Moon” is a masterpieces that shines on this turntable. I don’t have many LPs available to me but I can say Norah Jone’s “Come Away With Me” is a stunner, Lorena McKinnitt’s “The Visit” is breathtaking. At this point, I am not longing for upgrades. The Automat is amazing just the way it is. The fact that you get that level of sound quality, and the machine will put on, and take off the tone arm and stop the platter is almost unbelievable. It may sound petty, but I wish it was slightly more automatic. It would be great if it had a Repeat function, and out of this world if it had a remote control so you could start it from the comfort of your sofa. But, alas, having a record player and listening to records is about the experience. it's is an excellent machine. I am really enjoying it. ... show more

  • Problems
I bought this particular turntable because it is advertised as one of the best to connect to a Sonos system. I also bought a Sonos Five Speaker to connect it to. This model also has a built in preamp which I thought was a good idea. Bottom line is that there is a strong and loud electronic hum when I try to play this through my Sonos system. I've trouble shot the issue through Sonos and they eliminated any speaker or cable issues. I will call Pro-Ject Customer service on Monday (They are not open on weekends). If I get this resolved I will update this poor rating. It could be that this simply came with a defective preamp that's what I suspect after trying everything else. Update: The tech rep from Project-Ject finally confirmed that it must be a defective preamp after I spent most of the call convincing him that the A1 even had a built in preamp. He spent much of the call telling me it did not and that I needed to purchase an amp. He finally told me to return it. That caused me to decide to purchase the Sony PS-LX310BT instead of simply replacing this model. So my low rating stands. ... show more

  • My second, but better than the last version
This turntable is made in the Rekkord factory in Germany which used to be Dual before they sold the name. It has been available under several names (Dual, Marantz, Andover, Rekkord, Thorens), but this version has a higher quality set of RCA cables than the others (which are otherwise identical). There's nothing to adjust on this and the cartridge is pre-mounted and adjusted. I checked it with the MFSL Geodisc and it was aligned perfectly out of the box. In the past this has been sold with both AT and Ortofon cartridges, so you actually do have several options for a replacement in spite of what reviewers have said to the contrary. The OM10 cartridge is decent for most listening, and there are replacement styli options too (OM20, LP Gear upgraded, etc.). One word of caution is that these come with the phono preamp engaged. Maybe that's what most casual listeners need? it's easy to switch off if you need to. Comparing this to my Rega 3 with a Pearl cartridge, it sounds pretty much the same. Not high-end I suppose, but perfectly enjoyable. ... show more

  • Record player good Amazon bad
Ordered and it was super defective and made a loud dragging noise. Amazon wouldn’t replace it (???) and said I had to return and reorder. It costed $100 more lol so I’m pretty annoyed at Amazon. They also kept saying they’d refund me and not doing it. The new record player works well but Amazon itself was pretty trash here ... show more

  • The best in class
Yeah this one is awesome I returned the Denon and tried this one - I like it a lot more. I also like it more than the audio technica ones I tried. Highly recommend

  • Easy Plug and Play Turn Table
This Pro-Ject Automat was very easy to unbox and set up. There is a good pictorial setup guide that comes in the box. This has replaced a manual turntable. Having to be conscious of when the record finished to remove the arm was more of a pain than I had imagined and I’m glad to be back to an automatic Turn Table. I have this connected to a Sonos Play 5 via the inbuilt pre-amp and the sound is great. It’s extremely quiet and the controls are smooth and easy to use. My only gripe (hence only 4 stars) is the platter…yes, the platter they brag about! It has a gentle up and down every revolution, about an eighth inch, maybe a little more. While a small warp does not affect the sound, it is noticeable and unattractive. ... show more

  • Very nice for the money!
This is not the top of the line turntable, but it has excellent sound like one. I am truly impressed with the performance of this product right out of the box.

  • Junk
For $500 it should be wayyy better. Opened box. Set up as per instructions. Took off needle cover. Hit start, needle missed record. Bounced down the side of record. Then put needle on record manually. Needle goes skittering across record. Checked needle weight… good. Boxed it up, sent it back. Junk. Have a Sony PX-LX310 BT, thought I was upgrading. Nope, back to the Sony. Pro-ject you owe me not just a refund, but a brand new Eagles Hotel California! Junk, be ashamed, very ashamed. ... show more
