This isn't a plug-n-play device, you'll need to read the instructions to properly prepare it for use -- not unlike a cast iron skillet needing to be seasoned first. So read the instructions and prepare the inside of the bowl for use. You'll also find that the supports are rough and will scratch about any surface. Although the instructions state that a non-slip adhesive pad is included for the legs, there was no such animal in my box. If your pads are missing, too, I would suggest you cobble together an alternative -- as I did -- to avoid scratching your counter top. Other than that omission in the packaging, I'm happy with this mortar and pestle set. It's solid (heavy), sturdy and, for an item that sees infrequent use, should last forever. ... show more

As someone who enjoys cooking cuisines that are heavy on the spice blends, and who loves guacamole but doesn’t love having to make one avocado’s worth at a time in a small mortar, I decided to give this a try. I was looking for a nice-sized set that I could use for years to come. I think this will do the trick. Here is my assessment. Sturdy, durable, comfortable to use: This mortar and pestle are solid granite, which means they are likely to hold up well over time. I like the feel of it; the bowl is substantial and stays put, and the pestle is comfortable to use. I have medium to large hands however, and if you have small hands, the pestle might feel a bit big to you. Size: This is a good size for bulk grinding BBQ rub or making enough pesto or guacamole for a family. Seasoning instructions: If you want to keep your set from absorbing the odors, powdery dust, and oils from whatever you are preparing, you will need to season it. It comes with instructions so the guesswork is removed. Pro tip: You will need rice, garlic cloves, cumin, salt, and pepper, so make sure you have some on hand. Like any seasoning process, it will take a little time but is worth it for ongoing good results. I recommend seasoning it a day or two before you intend to use it. Easy to clean: This cleaned up great. I rinsed it, then used some mild dishsoap and a dishcloth, and let it air dry. No funky leftover spice smell! Watch your counters: This is heavy and has unfinished granite feet; this could be an issue if you place it on your counters or even a wood table. On first use, I set it on a big wooden cutting board that I didn’t mind getting scratched up. I have since added little felt furniture protection feet to it and set it on a silicon mat when I use it. The only drawback is I have to try not to get the fuzzy feet too wet when washing the bowl. I figure I will have to replace them occasionally. If you are more of a casual cook who makes guac once a year, and doesn’t do a lot of salsas, pastes or spice blends, then this may be overkill. However, if you are looking to add a quality, larger mortar and pestle to your tools, this could be a good fit. ... show more

The PriorityChef granite mortar and pestle arrived in appropriate packaging, and a quick wash prepared both for use, followed by a bit of a dry (did not want to ruin spices). This is a superb piece of kitchen equipment, a bit large to be grinding spices for one meal, but for bulk, marvelous, and just large enough but not too large to create a wonderful guac or even to mush garlic. Of course, this thing is GRANITE, after all, and therefore rather heavy, which I found to be a positive feature. While a relatively mundane item, perhaps, a bad m/p is miserable, and a good one heavenly. This set is the latter. I would have paid double for it. Any further questions? Rating : 5 stars! Buy this product, as we will be doing so again for ourselves or as gifts. 4: A good solid product with few flaws offering good to excellent value for money. 3: The most common rating, a good product at a decent price, perhaps flawed a bit, perhaps with difficult packaging or micro-print instructions. 2: Bottom shelf, would buy this at some fraction of cost for a limited use, disappointing performance, would not donate to charity 1: We are shocked this product is offered for sale.
