  • It's a FRFR for Bass and Bass amp modeling sodtware
I just got this for bass practice in my living room. I had a Spark 40 and it was functional for my 4 string at low volumes. The Spark Live is very good for 5 string Bass. Still very small for its power. In my setup I use the line 3 input in Hi z mode as my bass is active. I slave the thing to my Mac running Bias Fx 2 (any modeler will do) as the on board Bass models are limited in the fx chain. As an aside the onboard bass models are fine for most songs but the lack of octaver bugs me. I'm then able to play may backing tracks and training software from the mac. Also it records the dry signal in my daw. If you use the onboard effects they record wet. I like that when I have the Mac hooked up I can still control it via the Spark App on my phone and use it as a BT speaker all at the same time. The backing tracks are FRFR and the ba@ sounds great. Actually it is the first FRFR I've had that works with bass models. I tested it with my Line 6 Helix and it is solid. ... show more

  • Big sound tiny package!
I was initially skeptical when I saw only paid promoters and Positive Grid reviewing the Spark live on YT. I saw a handful of vids from content creators who were sent a free Spark Live and it seemed like none of them used it in a live scenerio; So I was reluctant to pull the trigger. Then the curse of impulse buying took over and 2 days later I received it! It was fun to toy around with but I really wanted to use it in a band setting so I waited a week to utilize in band rehearsal. This thing is loud! The vocal clarity was crisp! The guitar sounded great and the tone bank made it so juicy! I don't have any complaints! Heads up, the PG Spark Control is not compatible (at least in my experience). ... show more

  • Fun until you start running into the issues.
I have been playing guitar for about 30 years at this point and that’s what is behind this review. In one word, it is fun, but the fun ends depending on your expectations. My expectations were consumer level modeling stuff and that’s what it is for the most part. It’s not great and it’s not terrible, it’s just; good. As much as I really wanted to love this thing, there are a just too many things that add up which make the experience frustrating and unenjoyable. I bought this for a home “fun” practice amps and maybe throw it in the backyard if the kids want to pump music or whatever. I am mainly a tube amp guy but also am into modeling to a bit as well so this is not a tube lover dumping on a digital rig. Here are the issues: Signal path - You cannot change the order of the signal path in regards to effects. I did not realize this at all before buying. I did know that you could not add additional slots but I thought the effects themselves would be swappable between different slots in the path. This is not the case. Positive Grid has decided the order of certain pedal types should be used and that is the final word. Huge letdown for me as part of modeling, in my opinion, is modeling lets you try/experiment with different things fast and easy. This restriction was a huge bummer. Sounds - The sounds are…..okay. What really got me into this was buying the $13 Jimi Hendrix bundle. The amps in there are WAY better than the out of the box stuff that Positive Grid offers in my opinion. They have a bit of magic that the stock out of the box stuff doesn’t have. If you are a user of this amp I would highly recommend the purchase even if you have nothing to do with Hendrix at all. The amps sound great and a higher tier than the box stuff. Control X - I bought the Control X pedal box along with the amp. It looked like a great addition to the Live. It works okay. It’s incredibly frustrating that you have to pair the unit EVERY SINGLE TIME you use it. Why? I get that maybe you have other Positive Grid hardware you want to use it with, but just force me to pair it when I change hardware; not when I want to turn not he amp and goof around for 15 mins a couple times a day. I guess it’s possible it’s a hardware defect of some kind. I mean it’s not the end of the world but it’s frustrating and ruins the feel of the supposed easy experience digital/modeling/etc. stuff. I just want to turn it on and go and understand that the trade off to that is lower quality tone but I’m not waiting for a tube amp to warm up and not burning up my tubes to mess around while I have a few minutes to spare. App / Hardware Connection - Another big problem was the amp seems to just forget the hardware presets until I crank the preset knob on the front or fire up the app, navigate to the proper hardware and connect. Then the ones that are SPECIFICALLY for the hardware slots which should just come on as soon as I power up the unit. Why do I have to do something to get the amp to just use the preset it is currently on and was using when it was turned off? It just doesn’t make sense. No thanks. ... show more

  • YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!
I have to admit that I was worried when I ordered the Spark Live. Was it going to be a "jack of all trades and master of none" and bum me out or live up to Positive Grid's marketing hype? Well cynical me needs to take a time out, because this thing is really cool, easy to use, and as Positive Grid promises.... LOUD. Not all you fronting a death metal band loud, but definitely sufficient for coffee house gigs, street busking (you can buy a rechargeable battery), or even a small ensemble with a well-behaved drummer. It took me about 10 minutes to plug in my Tele, dial up a lush, lightly overdriven tone, get a vocal mic happening with some tasty reverb and link my iPhone to the Live so that I could use the mixer, tweak my guitar sound a little more, and stream audio (also via bluetooth) to the Live. And there I was ready to go for my next small gig, backing tracks, guitar and vocals all coming out of this one device and sounding great. There's some kind of spatial atmospheric voodoo going on with the multi-speaker system that makes the sound fill the room and not feel like it's all just blasting at you from one source. Science rules. The list of what I need for gigs just got way shorter. (guitar, headstock tuner, guitar cable, mic, mic cable, mic stand, Spark Live and iPhone.) That's one trip from the car instead of two or three—which in the rain, snow, or heat, is lot more pleasant than 3. So again, with feeling, YESSSSSSSS! ... show more
