  • Best headlamps
Petzl is by far my favorite headlamp manufacturer and I have owned a few other brands including nite ize, and princeton tec. Their longevity is great, I have some that are over 10 years old (not that bright by todays standards though) and still running strong. The new core lights are fantastic, besides having 2 options for batteries, The rechargeable CORE and AAAs, they are vey bright, have multiple modes including red, and are easy to operate. i also find the light such as this with no rear battery pack and are very lightweight to ge very comfortable for long use. i have one of these and 3 Actic Cores in random spots around my house for night use as well as power outages (in addition to my 3 or 4 ‘vintage’ Petzls). ... show more

  • Great headlamp
I purchased the similar Petzl Actic model for my wife, which has the bright colored band and visible side lighting. This is much brighter than my older Petzl head lamp, and I like the fact that it takes a rechargeable battery pack. The charge lasts a long time, even in cold weather. With a red lamp plus 3 levels of white lighting, it's perfect for work or hunting. I like this head lamp so much that I ordered a second one to keep handy in my service truck, these are great! ... show more

  • It's a pretty good headlamp
This is a pretty nice headlamp, with white and red light settings as well as flashing settings for both colors. Nothing too fancy but the battery is rechargable which I thought was pretty cool since I won't have to buy triple a batteries as much. My only issue with it was the price. I don't think it should be as much as it is but I did pay for it. I think there are probably better options for half the price but overall it's a great little light that will last along time with the proper care and for my uses (mechanic work, home diy, etc), this is all I need. Highly recommended ... show more

  • Really bright and convenient charging.
My nieghbor says, "NOW THATS A HEADLAMP!" Great brightness. Perfect for commuting and everyday use. USB charging on the core battery is very convenient. Does not come with a cord or wall wart but I already had them for my phone. Battery does not last long on high. Even less than 3 x AAA batteries, and doesn't work as well below -10F being lithium. But it's so convenient to charge every few days. And it is by far brighter than my old petzl xp and tactikka. It probably won't be my first choice for camping since it can get drained so quick and has to be open or battery removed to charge. ... show more

  • Skeptical because of some reviews?
I was skeptical. One person said it's built in a way that the battery is visible so there is no way it could be water resistant or hold up long term: they must have received a defective unit. You can't see the batter terminal at all when it is closed. Another reviewer said the button was awful and had a soft/squishiness to it with no clear/firm "button" feel to it. Again, I think this could be a defective unit, because I know the frustrating sensation this reviewer is referring to. It's definitely rubber/soft cover, but the centered button is very clearly defined, easy to push and have the unit register the push, and firm/responsive... Another user said the settings were complicated. This person may just be thick, or it could be another defective unit. You press the button for 3 different brightness levels, or hold it down for red mode. Pretty straight-forward, 10 second learning curve. This headlamp is lightweight, feels secure and relatively comfortable, and I love that it is both rechargeable AND you can use regular AAAs in a pinch. The brightest setting is more than most hikers/campers will need for most uses, and the second brightest is plenty to see the immediate area around you for longer battery life. The lowest setting is good for preserving the most battery life and doing things like going to the bathroom, reading, fixing/rigging something, or other activities that are closer to your eyes and less demanding on light. My only gripe with this headlamp is that there is no charge port accessible from the unit–you have to remove the batteries to charge them. It would have been nice to be able to run a USB cable to a battery pack when using this as a lantern in a tent, or in a pinch while hiking/at camp... instead of having to use separate AAAs. That could make it less water resistant, but smartphone companies have figured out how to provide both so this should be able to as well. I'd pay more money for that feature. Petzl is an extremely established company, so that gives me comfort knowing I can reach out to them for support in the future. In theory, they would be helpful, but I haven't had experience with that yet. --- I also wish products like this had a more "modern" aesthetic, by which I really mean "vintage/classic." The plastic feels...plastic, the "TACTIKKA CORE" text is boring and ugly, the branding is in your face, etc. The black color is very..."tactical / tech" and boring. I'm a sucker for the hipster aesthetic with classic materials like leathers, metals, or higher quality matte plastics, and more earthy colors. I think most hikers are... I don't know why the industry has leaned into the tech aesthetic for so long. If a headlamp company filled that niche, I'd buy right away if it was as simple, comfortable, and high-quality as this Petzl. Until then, this will do. ... show more

  • A Reliable Partner.
This thing gets bright, very bright when needed. I had to learn how to use it effectively to appreciate it more. My application is attic crawling and repair work. I use it in the middle setting and will last longer than I can under a roof. I only use the brightest setting when I need to look at something more than 6 feet. It is small, weights next to nothing, and you can forget it's there sometimes. The proprietary batt is actually a plus, I charge it next to my cell as a habit. When in tight spaces it is supreme, like a reliable partner. I'm not a user of night vision but I'll test it on a fishing trip. ... show more

  • Amazing Headlamp
Petzl is well known brand with good reviews all around the web. As well they are a military supplier and I expected nothing but a good product when ordering, but Made in China as many good brands do nowadays unfortunately... And I was wrong :) I Was literally stunned to realize that headlamp was Made in France! Amazing!!! So much a joy! ... show more
