Description

Petmate Excelsior Nesting Pads provide a soft surface for hens to lay while helping eggs stay dry, clean, and protected from breakage. The chicken nesting box pads absorb moisture from the surface to the paper lining below, providing a sanitary nesting environment for incubation and harvesting eggs. Compatible with most nesting boxes, these nesting pads feature a soft, flexible material that hens prefer over hard surfaces. By attracting hens to lay in the nest box, these nest pads ensure cushioned protection for eggs and easy egg- gathering in a single place. The excelsior surface holds firm to the backing, allowing hens to easily manipulate their nests while keeping nest boxes tidy.     • My hens love these...
And so do I. The hens like them because they can still fluff them up. I like them because they are easy to replace when needed and the hens can't scratch them out of the box when fluffing them. They last a long time. Much easier than cleaning and replacing straw or hay or wood chips or carpet pads or a dozen other things people use. Here is another tip for the home - chicken ranchers out there...in all the time I have had chickens, the best thing I have ever done is to use sand in the coop instead of hay/straw/woodchips, etc. I buy a couple of tons at a time from the rock/concrete industry. It is super inexpensive and keeps the eggs and the hens cleaner than any other medium. The hens love it. They enjoy a good sand bath. A nice thick bed of sand. I wish I had known decades ago. Shoveling soiled bedding is no fun. Using sand in the house and run and using these nesting pads in the hen boxes will make your hobby much easier and more enjoyable. ... show more

    • Only got 9, but thick and nice quality
I only received nine of these pads (took them out to triple count), but I did like how thick they are. They come with a thin recycled looking paper attached to the bottom which is nice because then they don't stick together and it helps hold each pad together a bit more. They weren't wrapped in plastic and didn't contain any company branded paper as pictured and came loose, perfectly fitted in a plain brown box which is a win for me - less packaging seems like something I should get more behind! These are pretty thick (maybe almost a half an inch). I thought about trying to separate each into two pads, but chose not to because I thought I'd probably ruin them and make a mess. I can't speak to how the chickens like them quite yet as I only just now added them to my nesting boxes, but they look nice in there, fill the box well (my boxes are about an inch smaller these pads and the edges fold up nicely on the lower edge of the walls without looking too bulky or odd), don't smell weird, and look like they will protect the eggs well. Fingers crossed my chickens like them and this helps inspire them to start laying soon! ... show more

    • Easy cleanup
I love how easy it is to clean the nesting boxes when I use these. I change them about every six weeks unless there’s a mess and the chickens don’t scratch them up. They come nicely packaged, they’re easy to put in, and they fill up the whole box so there’s no mess underneath after a broken egg.

    • My Chickens Said "Thank You"
I've tried more than one brand and these have been the best. They were sturdy and lasted a long time. I could bang them out a little when needed to get rid of dirt/sand tracked in by my chickens. They held up to all the chicken scratching. These were nice for about 3 months before needing changed, as opposed to others I've use that only held up for a a few weeks before having a huge hole scratched out of the middle. They could've been slightly less expensive and that would have kept me from searching for other brands. ... show more

    • Love how you can shake the poops off of them after you gather eggs.
I bought these because my brooder boxes are open in the back and the shavings were falling out. My friend had to collect eggs for me one time, and she mentioned how easy it was to keep the brooder boxes clean now. If a chicken poops on the nesting square, you can just pull it out and give it a good shake and most of it falls off if it wasn't squashed in. Chickens seem to like them too. ... show more

    • Auto order for years!
We've had a backyard flock for 12 years and these are my go-to for nesting boxes. When they get icky I compost the full pad, swap out a new one and we are good to go.
