  • Great for Piano Tuning
I bought this because it is much more portable than my Peterson 490 I use for piano tuning. This is absolutely great, and I love it! Perfectly fits on top of upright pianos, and hooks on the music rack guide rail of grand pianos by the built in stand in the back. It is accurate enough for my needs to set temperament, and can also download stretch tuning settings for upright and grand pianos from Peterson! It is perfect to fit in my tool box, instead of having to drag along my separate case I used to have to with the 490 I have. This is completely programmable, upgradeable, and you can download tons of other tunings for other instruments! I can rely on it's stretch tuning abilities, because I tested it against my ear and it seems to be dead on with my ear and with the 490. It comes in it's own form fitted case with USB cable to hook to your computer to get updates and downloads of other tunings. The USB is also for charging the unit, which holds the charge very long! I charged it when I bought this and tuned already 3 pianos and the charge is still FULL! I would say the only thing that would be bad is the extreme notes at each end of the scale seems to be off and has a hard time hearing the notes, but you can use an external mic and I assume that would take care of it. The only complaint I have with this is that it only comes with the USB cable to charge off your computer. It would have been nice to get an actual charger with the unit, which I had to order separately from Peterson at a "discounted rate if I ordered within 24 hours" after I installed the software from Peterson and registered it. I also ordered a suction cop mic from them, which turned out to be for acoustic guitars, not for pianos. It has a built in mic that does what I need though, and for what it can't hear at the extreme notes on the piano, I can still just do by ear anyhow. A true piano tuner doesn't use a tuner for everything anyhow, and I only use it for reference. Nothing is better than your ear, so I only use it to make things go faster, which it does. Over all, I am extremely happy with this, and strobe tuners are the very most accurate, so you can't go wrong. It does many things I haven't even explored yet. I give this 5 stars for convenience, portability, affordability, and updatability. ... show more

  • Serious gear for the serious musician.
This tuner does it all, and does it well. As my first experience with a strobe tuner, I can say I'm recommending this to all of my friends. Do a you-tube search and you'll find some really neat, and in depth, product demonstration videos. I purchased this product as well as the optional metronome unlock code and the clip-on vibrating monitor for the metronome and am well pleased with the performance. I use it with guitars and bass guitars (electric and acoustic) and adjusting the intonation couldn't be easier. If one were a perfectionist beyond normal perfectionism, this device will allow you to get the intonation so close as to be considered almost over-kill. There is a point where the human ear can no longer discern the differences, but this device will show you the "perfect" intonation spot (if one were so inclined to spend that much time making the adjustments, which could be argued as not necessary). I found this tuner was able to show subtle differences when adjusting the intonation with only a 1/8 (or so) turn of the screws. My standard ($15.00) name-brand tuner registered everything as "perfect" while this device showed those slight inaccuracies. My efforts were surely unwarranted, but I wanted to see just how sensitive to intonation changes this tuner was able to detect. My conclusion is this tuner can detect intonation changes far beyond what someone would actually need to achieve "perfect" intonation. It has two standard 1/4" jacks (one for input and one for output) and can be used inline for real-time pitch monitoring. One of this products strongest features, in my opinion, is how FAST it registers the pitch once a string is played. No more delays while waiting for the note to register! This fast response really helped my son to understand scales (half steps and whole steps) to find specific notes on a guitar. He was able to practice the scales and watch this tuner to see if he indeed played the scale correctly by watching the instantaneous pitch display. Great tool for teachers explaining basic music theory of scales to students as well. This was a use for this tuner which is not specifically advertised as a function of its capabilities so I thought I'd mention it as well. It has so many features, which you can setup on a computer and download into the unit via USB connection, but one feature I'd like to share as it really contributes to how much I enjoy this device. The programmable storage. I can program specific tunings, for specific instruments or guitars, which can be immediately recalled and used to tune a guitar to any predetermined tuning. There is a threaded insert on the back of the unit so one can mount it anywhere (on a mic stand, etc). This is most definitely a piece of "pro-gear." ... show more

Received my tuner today. Shipping and packaging were very good. I had loaded Chrome and the Peterson Connect prior to the tuner getting here. Plugged it in to my laptop and registered the device. The tuner was already at the latest firmware. I purchased the update for the Metronome and it was only $29.95 as a bundle code was projected as soon as I selected it. The update goes fast. LIke a few seconds. Setting the configuration was easy and syncing the new presets and USR initials was also quick. Everything went smooth and quick. Battery was charged full upon receiving the unit. I like the crisp display. Its fairly easy to use the tuner and metronome. It was accurate though. I will read through the manual and see what else I can learn. I like the idea of being able to tune everything I own and even many different instruments in my house.I guess I am getting old as I really like the big buttons and display. I also like the different configurations and changes that can be made. I made some presets for my guitars, banjo, acoustic and default so I do not have to go through the list of 90 plus sweet settings to load one. I can just pick one of the four I set and I am there. Yes its not cheap but you get what you pay for. The unit works as advertised. I have no dissatisfaction with the tuner at all. This will work well for me so I can use one unit and do all the instruments I have. Not sure if I want to get the vib clip. I'lll have to think about that one. ... show more
