  • Great for monitoring accuracy of intonation while playing!
This little tuner clips on easily to the violin next to the fingerboard, and it is great for tuning the violin. In addition, if you leave it on, you can monitor your finger position as you are playing to learn the basic finger positions for each note on the strings. The only drawback is that the tuner automatically turns itself off after 10 minutes, so you do have to turn it back on if you still need it while practicing. I’m a beginner at violin, and I have found that this little device has been helping me memorize the correct placement for each note. It can stay on the violin indefinitely, because the violin fits easily into the case even while the tuner is on the violin. One other little drawback is that, for some reason, once in a while, the tuner arbitrarily dislodges itself from the violin, and I have to secure it again. This could have something to do with my thumb touching the back of the tuner where the little lever clamps shut to secure it to the violin. In any case, it’s a workable “problem” that is probably user-error, so I won’t take off any stars for that. In general, I am very happy with this tuner. It is highly accurate, and such a helper for my violin progress! ... show more

  • What a great gizmo
I bought this for my fiddle playing daughter, who is quite particular about ensuring that her instrument is in perfect tune. While one can do this using a piano, it's hard to lug one of those around. So having this for on the road, at events or just to play has proven to be quite positive for her. A fine investment in both sound quality and consistency, as well as ease of use. ... show more

  • Truly Excellent Product - Terrible Marketing
For function, utility and usability I definitely give this device 5 stars. I works great and unlike another reviewer I experienced no problem with the G string. I can even leave it on my violin when it is in the case. Having said all that I cannot say anything similar to the information that comes with it on a preprinted card. For this I will only give it 1 star. While the card does give a good description concerning "out of tune", "almost in tune", and "in tune"; it leaves you to believe that it will only tune the A string. Marketing has missed the boat in failing to reveal that it displays all notes including sharps and flats. But there are worst problems. I assumed that this device had an acoustic pickup and proceeded accordingly. I turned it on and played various notes on my piano. NOTHING HAPPENED! Thinking that the problem might in some way be related to harmonics, I tried a french horn since a french horn has no harmonics. Still nothing happened. I then tried my violin and the device continued to do absolutely nothing except blink occasionally. I was just starting to package it back up as a return when I decided to experiment with its "unique mounting system". This "mounting system" is very nice and works great. Then for no particular reason, I drew my bow across a string. Finally it worked! The pickup is not acoustic. It is mechanical. Why can't D'Addario reveal this information to the customer? Nowhere do they mention that it must be mounted in order to operate. They only mention what a nice mounting system they have - nothing else. On a similar note, why not provide the customer with the replacement battery part number? There is plenty of room on the card for that information. The customer's only option is to read it off the actual battery that comes with the device. On a negative note regarding utility, I concur with the remarks of other reviewers who have complained about the difficulty in opening the battery case. It is VERY difficult. D'Addario does need to take another look at its design. Despite my criticisms I still rate the device with five stars. It truly is an excellent product. ... show more

  • Easy to use, low profile
I like this as a violin tuner. It's easy to read, and I've been able to use it even in an environment with other musicians. Changing the battery is a bit of a trick, but it lasts a fairly long time. They make one of a similar design for other stringed instruments, like mandolin and guitar. Unlike attaching it to the body of the violin, you attach it to the head stock, where the tuners are. I had one get knocked off and fall to the floor, breaking into pieces. So the violin version is definitely a better system. ... show more

  • works well!
I wasn't sure whether this tuner would work for all my strings, but in fact it works for all the notes. So, you can use it when practicing scales to check your intonation. Fits nicely on the violin with the screen facing the player.

  • Cute and it works.
My violin teacher has one of these on her violin. It seemed to be much more convenient than the other larger tuner that doesn't attach to the fiddle. It was just one more thing to get out of the case and to find a place for. With this style, I can leave it attached. It's not obtrusive. I just put it next to the next on the body so I can easily see it when holding the violin. it is completely adjustable and locks down gently with a little lever. It's nice for a beginner like me, not only for initial tuning, but it also helps me make sure I'm hitting the right spots on the neck as I'm playing. I comes with the battery installed. I just pulled the protective tab and it started working. It has a nice bright readout and seems to be very accurate compared to my other tuner. You can change it from 440 by pushing the arrow buttons. Has a soft touch on/off switch. A very nice tuner overall. ... show more

  • Misleading—does not have the metronome shown in the product video
This small device is accurate for tuning, but it seemed a little expensive for what it is. What convinced me to buy it at the current price ($25) was the metromome feature, because that added functionality rounded out the value for price, which definitely seemed worth it. BUT this newer model no longer has the metronome, despite the seller’s product video that features it. Deciding now if I will return it or not… Apparently these haven’t had the metronome for a few years now(?). Seller needs to update the video as it appears others have purchased this with the same impression. ... show more
