  • Excellent addition to a Traeger
Color: Hexagonal
I've been noticing that a lot of the negative reviews are a result of users not knowing what they are doing. People are complaining that the tube is hard to light or that the pellets burn too quickly. I have to state that the problem is with your pellets or your torch, or you. How is using a butane lighter (bic?) going to get pellets going? Really? Check your expectations and use your common sense. I use a real torch to get this going and good quality pellets. This tube works great! Way better than the chicken wire one I made myself. I used Bear Mountain Hickory pellets in my Traeger Ironwood 885 yesterday and the difference was very noticeable. Without this addition, the smoke would penetrate after a cook but the flavor just wasn't there. I was trying many different brands of pellets thinking it was the pellets but, no. The Traeger I have burns a little too cleanly and most of it is sucked right out of the vent -- even with super smoke, the flavor just wasn't hitting the mark. After I put this in, there is still a little smoke that escapes but placing it on the front allows the fan to pull the smoke over the food making it much more pronounced. For the first time in almost 3 years, I think I'm finally realizing the full potential of this smoker... it just needed a little help. I filled the tube up 80%, torch the top until a flame appears and I let it burn for 10 minutes. I blew it out and boy, there is a LOT of smoke. I smoked pork loins and it took about 3 hours. Once done, I still had about 30% left in the tube. I just knocked the smoldering pellets out and let it cool and then saved it for another day. Well worth the money and a great gift for any back yard cook! I can see this working really well using the snake method in a regular charcoal grill, too! ... show more

  • Works well at high altitude
I have electric smoker and the wood chip box that came with smoker was a joke. Couldn't get smoke going at 8,500 feet. I thought about getting that maze smoker box but read the reviews that it might not work well at high altitude but I also read that tube style may work better. So I took a chance and bought this tube and bought real wood pellets (100% pure hickory not those fake oil flavored filler hard wood pellets - I am looking at you, Traeger!). It works very well. Here what I did: 1) fill up the tube with pellets up to about 1 inch below the open end. Do not fill up to brim! 2) Tap the tube on table or something sturdy several times to settle the pellets. This part is important! 3) Tilt the tube toward you and light propane torch and aim the flame toward the pellets through open end until you see glowing pellets. It will take about 30 seconds or so. So that we get maximum heat. 4) Set tube upright and let the pellet flame burning for a minute or so. This is also important. 5) Finally blow out the flame and lay down the tube into smoker rack. 6) Put aluminum foil (about 12 inch by 4 inch size) as "tent" over the tube with both ends open. This allows the meat fats or whatever liquid dripping to not to get to the tube and possibly putting the flame out. This still allows smoke to come out. 6) put the cold food in the smoker. 7) close the door/lid. It will burn about 8 hours into fine ashes if laid down horizontally. I don't bother clean the tube - just empty the ashes and refill as needed. Aluminum tent over the tube helps minimize dripping mess onto tube. The tube is heavy duty stainless steel but it gets discolored due to propane heat but it doesnt look like it hurt any integrity of the tube. About using propane torch - it will go out if you turn the torch bottle to horizontal position. So, you can only hold the bottle at slight angle and hold the tube at angle toward you so the flame can reach the pellets through open end without propane flame going out. That is why I am giving this 4.0 stars. If they redesign tube to have a side loading instead of top loading - might be lot better. This smoker tube works well at 8,500 ft above sea level and I have been using it a lot in my electric smoker year round with thermostat control (see external 1500W plug in thermostat for electric smoker or fryer on Amazon). My hickory pellet is from CookingPellets.com (also from Amazon). I recommend this one - burns and smoked well. I hope this helps! ... show more
