Pandemic is one of my family's favorite games, so when Pandemic: Legacy was announced in 2014 it immediately went to the top of my wishlist. Let's get the conclusion out of the way first: if you like Pandemic, you will almost certainly love Pandemic: Legacy (with one caveat - see below). As of this writing, it's the second-highest ranked game on boardgamegeek. If you're not familiar with Pandemic, what you need to know is that it's a cooperative game - all players win or lose as a group. You take on the roles of various scientists working for the CDC, traveling around the world and dealing with epidemics. There are four diseases spreading through the world, and you must discover cures to all of them before it's too late... Pandemic: Legacy takes the base Pandemic game and turns it into a campaign, where each game affects all the ones after it. Ignoring outbreaks if you're close to winning is no longer a smart move, because those outbreaks will make your life more difficult in the following months. The game takes place over the course of a (game) year: you play a game in January, and if you win, your next game will be February; if you lose, you play a second game in January (and then go to February regardless of the outcome). In this way, a full campaign will take between 12 and 24 games depending on how well you do. The Legacy deck controls various events that come up; you simply draw cards from it until you reach a stop sign, which will tell you when to start drawing again (the first one says to draw it before playing your first game). At the start of play, the game is essentially the same as regular Pandemic, but the cards will let you open envelopes and boxes with additional components, rules, and stickers. Wait...rules and stickers? Yes, many things that happen during the game will require altering the board and rulebook by placing stickers. You'll write on cards. If things go badly, you'll tear up cards. I don't want to put spoilers in the review, so I won't tell you about what's coming up, but there have been more than a few cards that made me go "oh ****" when I read them. Your decisions absolutely matter - not only will screwing up make future games harder, but making a good play can make future games a lot easier. You should have seen what our super-powered medic did in a recent game... There's a story woven through the campaign, that explains everything that's going on (it doesn't just get more complicated for no reason - it gets more complicated for very good reasons). If you like theme in your games, they're really pouring it on. Not many games from the last few years have excited me, but Pandemic: Legacy does; it gives me the same feeling as the Trauma Center Wii games did, where you're involved in a suspenseful story. The one thing that seems to turn some people off is that this is a one-time-play game. You're putting stickers on the board. You're ripping up cards. At the end, you'll have a copy of Pandemic which is unique to you alone. I've actually purchased two copies of the game because I expect I'll want to play it more than once - the two boxes differ only in the box design, and have the same contents (but red is clearly better ;-)). However, someone on boardgamegeek has uploaded a set of sticker files that will allow you to do a full reset if you so choose - just don't rip anything up and you can play through the whole campaign as many times as you like. My favorite game along with Scythe Rise of Ferris. Lots of strategizing and planning. Each month, each loss, each win provides variants to the game play. Love the creativity. We are in the month of October and I am sad it will be ending soon! I did find the first 3 months a little too easy for my taste, so I discovered that if you always play with 4 characters and add an extra epidemic card from your original Pandemic game it makes the game intense and mistakes cannot be made.     • A gripping experience, with a few caveats
If you like Pandemic, this is a must-play experience. Essentially, you play through 12 ordered scenarios (one for each month of the game year), and each one delivers gameplay-altering surprises. Changes to the map, your characters, and even your cards stay in effect across scenarios. Pros: * Keeps the core gameplay of Pandemic—a true classic!—while making each month feel unique. * Real stakes. Every turn you'll make decisions that potentially affect not only the current win/loss conditions, but also future months. For example, allowing an outbreak to occur in a city will raise the panic level in that city, making it more difficult to travel to. * Challenging but never too rough, thanks to some clever balancing mechanics. (Losing one game makes the next game a bit easier, you always get two attempts, and there's even an "OPEN IF YOU LOSE 4 GAMES IN A ROW" package to help you out if you get in a rut.) Cons: * As more and more rules are added, they become harder to keep track of. Even the most hardcore board gamers will make some mistakes of interpretation. Since the rules are different for each of the 12 months, rules clarifications are hard to get. * Some rewards take the form of scratch-and-win cards, which are incredibly messy. Seriously, I hate those things! * Strategy purists will hate some of the aforementioned surprises, because there's no way you can prepare for them. For example, you might invest several of your upgrades in something, only to have that something destroyed at one point in the narrative. * Speaking of narrative, it goes off the rails pretty quickly. The tone abruptly shifts from "educational simulation" to "paranoid thriller." The silliness somewhat undercut the experience for me. Overall, I enjoyed Pandemic: Legacy and found it worth the price of admission. Note that you destroy the game as you go through its campaign, so it has no resale value. (If you're careful—setting pieces aside instead of destroying them when instructed to do so—you can still use the game as a basic Pandemic set.) ... show more
