  • A heckuva Gen 1 Carbon Fiber Control Paddle
Color: Design 2
I'm a 4.0 player and have succumbed to the try-a-lot-of-paddles weakness. I have owned/tried the Franklin Ben Johns Pro Paddle 13mm, the Onix Z5, Joola Radius and the Vatic Pro V7 (my current fave and full disclosure - I'm an ambassador for them; ask for a discount code). The Vatic has a filled foam edge and thermoforming so it has a really nice sweet spot and some Pop on demand. But I really wanted to dial in my 3rd shots and resets so I wanted to find a nice, elongated, control paddle. Contrary to some reviews I've read of this paddle, I would not consider this a power paddle. Yes, the modified head design has less wind resistance, but seriously folks? Pickleball is a game of consistency and control. Just how fast do you really think you are swinging??? But the specs looked like just about what I was looking for: - T700 carbon fiber. The Franklin paddle is nice, but that MaxGrit doesn't last that long. Vatic taught me to appreciate a T700 surface for long-term spin. - Elongated paddle shape. Personal choice here. Some folks say that the shape gives them a bit more reach. Maybe. I know when I'm desperate I slide the paddle out in my hand to just get that last bit extra and I'm grateful when I get that ball back on a lob or desperately digging that unexpected drop. I just know I spent more time w that shape and I like that sweetspot out a little bit further. - Midweight - Long handle. I've got a solid one hand backhand, but I keep on toying with the idea of a 2-handed one for better topspin off both wings. - Not thermoformed. Thermoforming has the reputation of more pop. And I really do like my Vatic V7. I intended this paddle to up my feel for resets and third shots, so I wanted more control. - Price. We all know that the market has paddles in the stratosphere. To some extent, you get what you pay for. But I wanted in/around $100. Voila. Enter nicol. About the only ding I could see on the specs is that they list T700 and not a specific brand like Toray. But heck, it hit all the other checkmarks. First, when it arrived, it was *beautiful*. The packaging was stellar. Great box. If I have to travel on a plane, its going back in there for safety. Next, checked the specs. All as they said, though mine came in at the lighter 7.9 oz. Next, the grip is *great*. Nice feel, absorbent, and I like the mild ridges in it. The handle is also relatively rectangular w mild diagonal cuts. Some paddles are more roundish/octagonal. I like this boxier shape. The handle and the throat shape really allows a good, solid 2-handed grip. I've tried a bunch of paddles - this one is stellar for that. If I do switch, there will be no overlapping, choking, etc. And I don't know about you folks, but I'm mostly one-handed except for occasional misjudgement where the ball gets behind me and that second hand makes for a better salvation shot. This paddle just feels right that way. Finally, lets check out the sweet spot. First check, just did the typical bound a ball around abit and its centered fairly evenly around that blue star on the paddle face. I'd prefer it a bit further out but I decided to try it. First impressions. Good control. Or is that "dead"? Sigh. I wanted something radically different, so of course, duh, it is different. It has a nice deep, dampened thonk when I hit. There'll be no issues with annoying the neighbors. This is soooo much quieter than the Z5. Sweet spot was a bit smaller than I wanted. I noticed that I naturally hit a bit further towards the tip (the vatic v7 is longer) and that's not where this sweet spot is. I'm getting a bit more slightly softer mishits and a slightly higher pitched "thwip". Hmm. I can either shift the paddle further out in my hand and voila. I'm dialed in again. Or maybe I'll add some lead tape out there. Its light. Its head light. Fast. I usually have fast hands so thats not an issue for me. But this is fast. On the down side its light and a bit more dampened. I need a bit more oomph to kill the ball or (duh) control it. The sweet spot wasn't as big as I like. They say that the foam walls widens the sweetspot. Not sure if thats due to weight or dampening from the foam or what. But lead tape is supposed to modify the sweet spot. So, courtesy of Ben Johns guidance, I added some tape around the bottom corners. This was *magical*. Just played 3 hours with this change. The shots have a bit (very little bit) more oomph but the sweet spot was dramatically increased. The 4 pieces added about 0.5 oz of weight, but all close to the handle. So just swinging it around I could notice it, but in terms of actual swing weight it was negligible. Flicks still worked, drives the same, but all the little touch things - resets, drops got better. So, all told I'm very happy with this paddle. But order some lead tape and plan to improve it a bit. I may still add some at the top in the future, but for now, I'm loving the control. ... show more

  • If You're a Beginner or an Experienced Player, Here's Why You Should Get It
Color: Design 2
In summary, I would highly recommend this paddle to anyone interested in improving their game and buying a paddle that can grow with them. For context, I'm a recent college graduate who has played several other racquet sports and is starting to get interested in tournament play (likely playing at around a 4.0 level). For beginners: One of my greatest regrets (regarding my pickleball career at least) was looking for the cheapest paddle available online and going with that as my daily driver. I started off with a cheaper fiberglass paddle that was heavier, had less power, an inconsistent bounce, and was generally more difficult to play with. I think this likely delayed my progression as a pickleball player. Having such a well-built, premium paddle available at such a reasonable price is a steal; it's great to see new companies providing premium products at lower prices now that the market has grown. In my opinion, if you see yourself playing pickleball a few times a week, $99 as a one-time purchase is well worth the improved experience. Why recommend for beginners: - It's lightweight (which is easier to control as you work on getting your swing more consistent). - It has a nice amount of pop/power (which allows you to focus on your swing motion and less on power). - The elongated handle is amazing; I'm not a big guy (about 5'10, 170 lbs) but my hands were a little tight on my first cheap paddle. Cheap paddles tend to have short handles, so if you're a guy over 5'9 I'd recommend skipping on cheaper paddles because the upgrade is well worth it! - It's affordable and the features it offers are likely to accelerate your development as a player. It will also eliminate the need for a tough switch from cheaper fiberglass paddles to carbon fiber paddles, as this one is already made from a nice, gritty carbon fiber. For more experienced players: You've likely tried a variety of paddles throughout your time playing, but I still highly recommend this paddle to most people. I recommend this paddle because: - I love the weight distribution. I'd say it feels a little bottom-heavy, which in my opinion gives the paddle a better feel and makes it easier to control and move around (despite being a pretty typical 8 oz). - The carbon fiber is VERY gritty. Most of my backhand shots are slices at the moment (still working on my top-spin), but recently most players have really struggled hitting my backhand shots when I add some power to the ball (because of the amount of side spin I get). It's a VERY noticeable difference in comparison to my previous paddle. - It's a powerful paddle; I swing softer than I did with my fiberglass paddle and the paddle travels significantly further. While this has taken some getting used to in actual game-play, the adjustment was well worth it. - The handle has a VERY premium feel. I really love the grip that comes standard on this paddle, it's very comfortable and I haven't had any issues with it slipping out my hand (like I did with my previous paddle when I got sweaty). - The elongated face is perfect. It's a little narrower than my previous paddle, but when I missed shots it was typically due to a slight lack of reach (vertically) as opposed lack of paddle width. This reduction in weight (by being slightly narrower) has accelerated my swing speed without compromising on paddle length. ... show more
