  • This Is MAGIC for Roasting a Perfect Turkey!!!
Color: Black Size: 18 Qt
I purchased this self-basting Oster 22 pound capacity turkey roaster shortly before Thanksgiving so I didn't really have time to try it out in advance. No problem; I read the manual. It alarmed me a little bit because they said absolutely NOT to stuff a turkey and roast in the product I just purchssed for that specific purpose. Ha! I have never cooked a turkey that wasn't stuffed. I went to the Internet and read eleventy-million different recipes and pontifications about cooking a stuffed turkey in an electric roaster. I decided to ignore Oster's concern and I'm extremely glad I did. Several experts opined that I needed to cook a stuffed turkey between 15 and 45 minutes longer than an unstuffed turkey. Wrong I cooked a 12 pound brined heritage free-range tightly stuffed turkey exactly according to Oster's recommendations for an unstuffed turkey. It came out absolutely PERFECT: Super moist, juicy, browned, and delicious! The stuffing was hot, moist, and yummy! It was hot, hot, HOT when we took it out of the turkey. There is NO way any normal cook would have a concern about bacteria. Good grief. I preheated the roaster oven first at 450°F. which is its highest setting. Wow!!! It got hot super fast -- and I mean hot. After 30 minutes of cooking the turkey, I turned it down to 325°F. I did not take the top of the roaster off as instructed which allowed the self-basting process to work its miracles. I really appreciated that there is a window in the top of the lid then able to me to see what was going on with the turkey without removing the lid to check. Checking was completely unnecessary. This roaster knows what it's doing! This was the easiest turkey I have ever made in 50 years of roasting turkeys. I love the fact that it has a very sensitive knob with large easy-to-read white numbers printed on the black roaster itself rather than a danged digital thermostat that is super-complicated to program and use. Because it isn't digital it is far more sensitive and easier to use -- and it will probably last longer. We didn't need a probe. This was super easy, simple, and delivered a flawless roasted turkey. ... show more

  • It's Great But You Should Know...
Color: Black Size: 18 Qt
It's about the size of the first microwave range ovens and larger than my current one. The lid doesn't fit well. Small bits of paint were already missing when it arrived. Although a well browned turkey is pictured with the product description, there is no turkey recipe or adequate instructions on how to roast a turkey in this roaster; and the time table is not accurate. I followed the time table and my turkey did not brown. It is too large to fit an average kitchen sink to clean. It is not easy to clean because it does not have a nonstick surface inside the roaster. The cord is extremely short. The manual recommends putting a trivet under it when cooking so the heat does not ruin your countertop. I used a wooden cutting board. The box it comes in is big, awkward and not easy to unpack. The packing box is huge making it very difficult to return. It took 4 hours for me to cook a 12 pound turkey and it is much harder to clean than a traditional roasting pan. But there is one advantage over my oven, it doesn't heat up my apartment. Another nice feature is it can be used as a slow cooker or as a regular oven with the caveat that you must always use the roasting pan which is a lot harder to clean than my crockpot or regular baking pans. The brand listed is Oster but when the product arrived the box states it is distributed by Sunbeam and made in China. I called the customer service number in the manual to ask about roasting a turkey. The representative read from a script, asked my name, phone number, and model number on the bottom of the product. I was placed on hold and when the representative returned she read another script that said "don't use dry ingredients." She thought that meant vegetables. UPDATE: I'm keeping it and giving it 2 more stars. This is best turkey ever and I read how to brown online: baste before cooking, start at 450 degrees for 30 minutes following the manufacturer's instructions for preheating, placing rack in proper position etc. Then cook remaining time at 325 degrees. It is important not to open the lid while cooking because it takes a long time to regain heat (unlike traditional ovens). What finally sold me, besides how tender my turkey came out, is that I don't have to bend and stoop over the oven or lift or bend to check and baste. Cooking on the counter is less wear and tear on me. Can't wait to try using it to slow cook and bake cakes! Thank you Amazon. Another wonderful product. 2019 UPDATE 12 Aug: I bought this roaster almost 3 years ago and it still works great. I roasted about 12 chicken thighs and they came out moist and juicy with about 2 cups of broth from the meat. The roaster cools down quickly and my small apartment did not get hot while using it. I brush the liner and rack with olive oil to keep food from sticking (this is not a nonstick roaster); this makes cleanup easy. ... show more

  • In spite of one issue - I love it!
Color: Black Size: 18 Qt
Love this thing!! We often have church dinners and when the church was small a large crock pot would do. We are large enough now that I needed something with a larger capacity. This is perfect. I have made chili (cooked the dried beans and then the chili) and sausages and peppers in it. We had plenty. It is good too for cooking a lot for freezing. In both cases not only did we have enough left over for the evening meal, but I could freeze a couple of meals as well. Pros: * Capacity (for reference - it cooked about 6.5 lbs of dry pinto beans) * Temperature control (love the low warm setting - it is much better than the one on my crock pot) * The fact that I can use it as a chafing dish (this model didn't come with the chafer, but you can order it from the Oster website) * The bottom does not get hot (the sides to to some extent, but not any more than a crock pot does * My crock pot can cook unevenly at times (it can scorch some in some areas unless it is watched and stirred often - maybe it is just mine). I have not had this issue with this, even though food has been kept on warm for 2.5 to 3 hours after cooking Cons: * You have to unplug it to turn it off * The lid is a bit thin. After one use it became dented and a little warped. I don't know if this happened when we went to store it, or if someone dropped it while cleaning up at church. I was able to bend it back and "unwarp" it. It didn't sit quite right on top of the roaster until I fixed it. But now I know to be more careful. The other parts do not seem as lightweight. ... show more
