Setting up is as easy as inserting the drives and turning it on, as long as you don't care about hardware level RAID. On that note, if you're using this for a NAS like proxmox like I am, you can save some money and just get the model without "R" in the number, which does not come with hardware raid, as you're probably going to want to use ZFS for raid, and leave the hardware raid mode turned off. I appreciate that after around 10-15 minutes of no activity the drives turn off and aren't constantly spinning, which should save a bit of power ... show more

Bought this item do use has a redundant backup system for my 2012 Mac computer. It was a great investment. Wasn't too costly. I highly recommend this for anyone thinking of using a redundant backup system for all your information on your computer.

    • Becomes useless pretty fast-Goes to sleep and can't wake up
So I bought this to function as a pooled backup drive. Installed easy, handled large TB drives. Feels well built. Worked well while the backups and file transfers were running. The problem comes in after the enclosure is idle for about 10 minutes. As advertised, it "goes to sleep". If going to sleep means two drives stay lit, but no drives are active or accessable, and there is NO WAY TO WAKE UP the drives or enclosure, so once it goes down, the only way to bring it back up is to physically reboot the enclosure. This obviously makes it completely useless. I tried to reach out to customer service, the Orico webpage is very much not meant for english users (it was translated to english, but only to tell you how the products are wonderful). If you try submitting technical support issues, the website won't let you proceed and has a popup, in what looks to be chinese, when you try to submit the inquiry. The support inquiry never seems to go through. I tried emailing some of the email addresses on their contact page, but that doesn't seem to get a response. I don't read chinese (or whatever language it is), so there seems to be no way to submit a support ticket. There also is no way to do a return on Amazon at this point for me, I guess I'm past the limited window for this product, which means I just wasted 250+ dollars. I figured the desktop software might help. The desktop software is in .RAR format, and while I have software that can open that file type, nothing seems to be able to open the download.....so again useless. ... show more

    • This item has serious connection problems.
And now it's too late to get it returned. I spent almost $300 on this device. It plugs in really easily, I got it connected, the computer recognized the drive when I initially configured it all, however, when it came to do some work on it, like populating it with files, archiving or unarchiving files, it would become unrecognizable by the computer and the operation I was busy with would get aborted and the computer would freeze. I also have a 4-bay unit from the same company and so far it's working just fine. I don't know what the issue is with the 5-bay one. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. It's most frustrating and I'm not made of money, so I can't afford another one without saving for one for a couple of months. ... show more

    • Nice enclosure but nothing but problems, my cheaper units work better.
I really like the enclosure, but it would not stay connected/awake and available for use. Nor could I find the support I needed. I also ensured that the computer or OS would not put the drives to sleep, but the enclosure still disconnected/went to sleep, and drive access would be lost. I also tried emailing Orico for technical support with NO success. And now it will not work at all. ... show more
